Undergraduate Student Symposium

The Undergraduate Student Symposium, sponsored by the Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences, presents student projects through presentations, papers, and poster displays. The event serves as a “showcase” demonstrating the outstanding scholarship of undergraduate students at NSU. The Symposium is open to undergraduate students from all disciplines. Projects cover areas of student scholarship ranging from the experimental and the applied to the computational, theoretical, artistic, and literary. They are taken from class assignments as well as from independent projects. Denial: Domestic Violence In The South Florida Tri-County Jewish Community, Michael Sue Jenefsky

The research hypothesis of the study was that there was denial with regard to domestic violence in the Jewish population of the South Florida tri-county area. The Jewish female victims of domestic violence that reside in the South Florida tri-county area were shown to be underserved stemming from denial within the Jewish community. Determining factors of underserved were the lack of faith-based shelters, shalom bayit (peace in the home), get (Jewish divorce), and the need for financial support from various sources. The purpose of this qualitative research study employing a cross-case analysis on previous case studies is to better understand the engagement of Latino students in a small number of cultural sensitivity programs and the teaching practices that are factors in the development of their academic achievement. In the traditional infrastructure of public schools, assimilation is built on fundamental values aligned with the U.S. political establishment rather than on the value of adaptation to the demands and conflicts of other cultures. Thus, less-empowered groups are at a disadvantage resulting in subgroups abandoning their ideas and reducing their contributions to human capital. …

Re-Centering Students’ Attitudes About Writing: A Qualitative Study Of The Effects Of A High School Writing Center, Katherine Palacio

While attitudes are difficult to assess, a qualitative research study can produce results to give insight into how a student feels a writing center has improved his or her confidence and attitude towards writing. This study reviews the minimal discussion of students‟ attitudes towards writing in past and current writing center research and builds upon the conversation by following three students‟ journeys in the writing center and discussing whether their experiences with the tutors has improved their attitudes about writing.

The purpose of this mixed-methods study was to investigate cognitive-load theory as applied to the design of streaming media. In this study, student learning preferences and cognitive style were measured on a visualizer-verbalizer scale to determine the perceived importance of visual and audio components of streaming media used to supplement classroom instruction. Additionally, this study investigated cognitive-load theory by assessing attitudes regarding the importance of learner control when accessing streaming media files. Is Speech Intelligibility Of Deaf And Hard Of Hearing People A Barrier For Occupational Competence?, Tova Most, Amatzia Weisel, Rachel Gali-Cinamon

The goal of the study was to evaluate the relationships between Speech Intelligibility (SI) and Occupational Competence (OC) of young deaf and hard of hearing (D/HH) adults. Thnty six young adults completed SI and 00 self-report questionnaires. The results indicated that occupations requiring less communication were considered to be more suitable than those requiring more communication. The level of prestige did not have a significant influence upon the ratings. SI was not found to be related to OC. The results suggest that D/HH young adults did not consider SI to be a barrier in the vocational domain.

The Career Experiences Of Deaf Supervisors In Education And Social Service Professions: Choices, Mobility And Networking A Qualitative Study, Denise Kavin, Kim Brown-Kurz,

In this qualitative study, the researchers interviewed eleven deaf and hard of hearing

professionals holding supervisory positions in educational and social service professions regarding factors that have affected their career experiences, specifically regarding choices, mobility, and networking. The respondents shared their experiences navigating the career ladder, including strategies used to move forward in the workplace such as networking and the use of technologies. Common threads such as tokenism and merit, communication access, and self-imposed limitations related to career choices, mobility, and networking were identified and discussed.

Survey Of Leadership Programs: Valued Characteristics Of Leadership Within The Deaf Community, Deborah Kamm-Larew, Marcia Lamkin

This study surveyed leadership programs operating for and by the Deaf community through questionnaire and interview data. Three categories of leadership development were identified as currently operating in the United States for people who are Deaf and Hard of Hearing: youth leadership programs, special interest mentoring groups, and formal leadership training programs focused on professional development and leadership skills. In addition, this study identified common leadership traits and training methods within these programs. Using a randomized list of leadership traits, valued characteristics were identified. The traits chosen most often were empowerment, advocacy, and decision making skills.
