Learning To Write Chemical Equations Is Something Else, Robert W. Hanson Jan 1978

Learning To Write Chemical Equations Is Something Else, Robert W. Hanson

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Chemical equations are the stock-in-trade for much of what is expected of students in the first semester of college chemistry. Knowing how to read them, balance them, and interpret them in terms of molar ratios or stoichiometry is one thing; being able to write them from chemical knowledge or from experimental observations is another.

Organizing A Rock And Mineral Club (Part I), Ron Bonstetter

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

This is Part I of a collection of ideas designed to promote the formation of rock and mineral clubs. Such programs are appropriate for interested individuals from upper elementary grades through high school. A broad range of interests and skills are suggested to leave room for the creativity of prospective club advisors. Membership in clubs of this nature provides many opportunities for the development of interests, hobbies and careers. The desire to pursue rock and mineral studies is developed and encouraged by creating an informal setting where individuals can identify and fulfill their interests. A successful club allows its members …

Teaching Both Brains, Roy Unruh Jan 1978

Teaching Both Brains, Roy Unruh

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

In the advanced vertebrates, including man, the two large hemispheres of the cerebrum of the brain serve as centers of perception, of voluntary motion, and of the higher mental faculties such as thought and memory. The two hemispheres are connected by several bands of nerve tissue the major tissue being the corpus callosum. The two hemispheres control the motor and sensory responses of the opposite sides of the body. Some hemispheric differences in function were reported as early as 1861 when Dr. Paul Broca observed that patients with lesions on their left cerebral hemispheres were more likely to suffer loss …

Human Physiology And Anatomy: For All Students At The Same Time, Irene M. Edgar Jan 1978

Human Physiology And Anatomy: For All Students At The Same Time, Irene M. Edgar

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

How should a specialized science course in high school be taught? Should it be treated as a career education course or as a general survey course? Should it follow traditional methods or should it be individualized? These questions were explored in teaching a two semester course in Human Physiology and Anatomy at Dubuque Senior High School. This course attracts students who plan a post-high school career in health oriented fields, as well as students interested in additional exploratory study that goes beyond general biology. In addition, others enroll for needed science credits. As a result, the course must service a …

Determining Textbook Readability, George R. Davis Jan 1978

Determining Textbook Readability, George R. Davis

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Since student success in science is related to reading ability, the selection of a readable text is crucial to classroom instruction. The determination of reading level is probably the single most important factor in textbook selection. If textbooks are unreadable for students, few students will read them and the other reasons for selecting texts will be lost to the reading audience. What determines the reading level of a textbook and how is the reading level of a textbook evaluated? This article discusses the answers to these questions and includes a quick method for reading level determination.

Don't Just Talk About The Weather: Investigate It Statistically, Bonnie H. Litwiller, David R. Duncan Jan 1978

Don't Just Talk About The Weather: Investigate It Statistically, Bonnie H. Litwiller, David R. Duncan

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Scientists frequently wish to determine whether the means of two sets of data differ significantly. A statistical tool for investigating such a question is the "Student t-distribution" so named because its originator, W. S. Gosset, published his findings under the pseudonym "Student". The problem considered in this paper will involve paired variates, that is, the case in which the observations in the first sample of data are paired naturally with those of the second.
