Range Expansion Of The Great-Tailed Grackle In The 1900s, James J. Dinsmore, Stephen J. Dinsmore Jan 1993

Range Expansion Of The Great-Tailed Grackle In The 1900s, James J. Dinsmore, Stephen J. Dinsmore

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

In 1900, the range of the Great-tailed Grackle extended north of the Mexican border only into Texas. Since then, it has expanded its range greatly. It now nests in 14 states and has strayed to an additional eight states and three Canadian provinces. Much of this expansion has occurred since 1960. Great-tails often stray far from their normal range, especially in spring. Most of these strays are single individuals. In states where they have nested, breeding birds typically reach the state a few years after the first reports of the species. Great-tailed Grackles do well in a variety of human …

Advances In Biomolecule Analysis: Ftms Of Macromolecules, Curtiss D. Hanson, Ira M. Simet, Suzanne R. Smith Jan 1993

Advances In Biomolecule Analysis: Ftms Of Macromolecules, Curtiss D. Hanson, Ira M. Simet, Suzanne R. Smith

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

The development of Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance (FT-ICR) as an analytical technique has opened new avenues to the analysis of high molecular weight biomolecules. Because mass analysis is based on a detection of a frequency, it is possible to obtain high resolution mass measurements without sacrificing sensitivity. The unique ability to analyze high mass ions is based in the design of a passive ExB ion trap. Although in the past, field inhomogeneities have limited this technique, recent developments in both trap designs and excitation techniques have resulted in major improvements in both sensitivity and resolution.

Mutant Weeds Of Iowa: V. S-Triazine Resistant Setaria Faberi Herrm, R. Thornhill, J. Dekker Jan 1993

Mutant Weeds Of Iowa: V. S-Triazine Resistant Setaria Faberi Herrm, R. Thornhill, J. Dekker

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

S-triazine resistance in giant foxtail (Setaria faberi Herrm.) has been reported previously, but not in the midwestern U.S. corn belt or Iowa. A study was conducted using a chlorophyll fluorescence assay to confirm the presence of resistance in one S. faberi population in Iowa. Variable chlorophyll fluorescence assays confirmed that a population of this species with this type of resistance exists in Iowa. This is the first report of s-triazine resistance in S. faberi, and the fourth species with this type of herbicide resistance, found in an Iowa agroecosystem.

Community Dynamics Of Phytoplankton In A Typical Navigation Pool In The Upper Mississippi River, Theodore R. Lange, Ronald G. Rada Jan 1993

Community Dynamics Of Phytoplankton In A Typical Navigation Pool In The Upper Mississippi River, Theodore R. Lange, Ronald G. Rada

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

In 1986 we studied phytoplankton in the mid-reaches of Pool 8, which is a typical navigation pool of the Upper Mississippi River. During years of normal discharge, the areas studied usually become distinctly different from each other (ranging from free-flowing river to stagnant marsh) as the ice-free season progresses. These differences among sites did not occur during our study because the discharge into Pool 8 during 1986 was about 85% greater than the 10-yr mean discharge (1972-1982). Moreover, differences among areas were not observed with respect to physical and chemical characteristics such as photic zone depth, temperature, dissolved nitrogen and …

The Pleistocene Glacial Record At Two Quarries In Decatur County, Iowa, Keith E. Schilling, Robert A. Stewart Jan 1993

The Pleistocene Glacial Record At Two Quarries In Decatur County, Iowa, Keith E. Schilling, Robert A. Stewart

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

The Pleistocene stratigraphy and sedimentology of two quarry exposures near Grand River and Decatur City in Decatur County, Iowa document a sequence of Pleistocene sediments overlying striated Pennsylvanian limestone which represent at least two pre-Illinoian glacial advances into the ancestral Grand River valley. Two pre-Illinoian diarnictons separated by a clast pavement were observed at the Decatur City quarry; a single diarnicton was present at the Grand River quarry. At both quarries, the diarnictons exhibit comparable lithologic properties and are genetically interpreted as basal tills. The pre-Illinoian tills are tentatively correlated with the Alburnett Formation in eastern Iowa, primarily on the …

Mass Selection For Adaptation In Antigua Maize (Zea Mays L.) Composite, F. M. San Vicente, A. R. Hallauer Jan 1993

Mass Selection For Adaptation In Antigua Maize (Zea Mays L.) Composite, F. M. San Vicente, A. R. Hallauer

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Tropical maize (Zea mays L.) germplasm has had limited use in temperate areas because of photoperiod sensitivity. Antigua germplasm from the island Antigua was introduced co Iowa because of its resistance to important pests of maize and its heterosis exposed m crosses with ocher tropical varieties. Mass selection procedures were used to adapt the Antigua Composite germplasm co Iowa conditions. After. Six cycles of mass selection for earlier silk emergence, the selected Antigua Composite flowered 17 days earlier than the original composite. Grain yield and ocher agronomic traits of the adapted scram of Antigua were similar co chose of adapted …

Evaluation Of Passive Integrated Transponders As A Marking Technique For Turkey Poults, Dewaine H. Jackson, William H. Bunger Jan 1993

Evaluation Of Passive Integrated Transponders As A Marking Technique For Turkey Poults, Dewaine H. Jackson, William H. Bunger

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Injectable, passive integrated transponders (PITs) were evaluated as a marking technique for newly hatched wild turkey (Meleagris gallopavo Linnaeus) poults. Seven of 12, 3-day-old domestic turkey poults received a PIT implant and a wing tag. A control group of five poults received only a wing tag. Two subcutaneous implant sites were evaluated, along the right side of the neck and in the area between the right inner thigh and breast. One of7 PITs failed or was expelled during the first week. Four scanning errors, in which the PIT was present yet not detected during the initial scanning attempt, occurred in …

Competitive Abilities Of Oat And Barley Varieties, B. D. Mcbratney, K. J. Frey Jan 1993

Competitive Abilities Of Oat And Barley Varieties, B. D. Mcbratney, K. J. Frey

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Competitive ability of a plant genotype reflects its capacity to yield well and compete successfully for light, moisture, and nutrients when grown with similar or dissimilar genotypes. This trait is important to plant breeding because most breeding populations are propagated in mixed or competitive stands. The objective of this study was to assess the competitive abilities of oat and barley genotypes.

Two sets of oat and barley genotypes were evaluated for competitive ability. Set I consisted of five oat varieties, and Set II consisted of two barley and three oat varieties. Neither set, when averaged, showed over- or under-compensation with …

The Early History And Recent Trends In Iowa Herpetology, Reeve M. Bailey, James L. Christiansen Jan 1993

The Early History And Recent Trends In Iowa Herpetology, Reeve M. Bailey, James L. Christiansen

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Herpetological exploration of Iowa began in 1823 with Long's expedition to the Rocky Mountains. From that time until an 1892 publication by Osborn based on Iowa specimens, herpetological research in the state was minor and incidental. Several significant reports appeared after that date involving analysis of Iowa specimens and from 1938 to 1944 a major base-line collection of the amphibians and reptiles of Iowa was established. Studies after that time have added a few species to Iowa’s known herpetofauna but recently have concentrated not only on composition of the fauna and distribution, but emphasized population changes, ecological relationships, and better …

Some Significant Iowa Plant Records From The Herbarium Of University Of Nebraska At Omaha, Barbara L. Wilson

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Though the herbarium of University of Nebraska at Omaha (OMA) lies outside the state boundaries, it contains a number of interesting western Iowa records. Publicizing these and other little-known Iowa plant records is especially important at this time, since a checklist of Iowa's vascular plants, compiled by Eilers and Roosa, is nearing completion.

Mathematics Anxiety: A Study Of Its Causes As Proclaimed By Educational Research, Jennifer Rupp Jan 1993

Mathematics Anxiety: A Study Of Its Causes As Proclaimed By Educational Research, Jennifer Rupp

Presidential Scholars Theses (1990 – 2006)

In today's fast-paced, high-stress society, feelings of anxiety have become commonplace; even normal. Of the many anxieties that have been found to affect people, one that I, as a future math teacher, have become very concerned about is mathematics anxiety (also called mathphobia). Even now, during my college career, I have noticed an alarming number of people around me (colleagues, co-workers, relatives, roommates, etc.) who claim to be "terrified" of math. Listening to their explanations as to why they find math so threatening has made me realize the importance that math anxiety will have in my career.

For these reasons, …

The Relationship Between Middle School Students' Knowledge Of The Concept Of Variable And The Use Of Concrete Manipulatives, Maureen E. Busta Jan 1993

The Relationship Between Middle School Students' Knowledge Of The Concept Of Variable And The Use Of Concrete Manipulatives, Maureen E. Busta

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Algebra is a difficult subject for a number of high school students. One of the major concepts involved in the learning of algebra is the use of variables. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of the use of concrete manipulatives on middle school students' knowledge of the concept of variable and attitudes toward mathematics.

An experimental study was conducted involving 335 students and 13 teachers. Teachers volunteered to be in the treatment or comparison group. Teachers in the treatment group were trained in the use of Hands-On Equations and used the materials in their classrooms for …
