1989-90 Annual Report, Illinois' Investment, Illinois Mathematics And Science Academy

Annual Reports

In many ways, the 1989-90 school year at the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy can best be described as a year of re-creation. Having successfully met the challenges of the start-up years (1986-1989), our fourth school year became a time for thoughtful reflection, refocus and renewal. Within the context of strategic planning, we began to examine our values and beliefs, to clarify our mission and aspirations, and to develop bold, innovative strategies for achieving our institutional objectives.

1987-88 Annual Report, Illinois' Investment, Illinois Mathematics And Science Academy

Annual Reports

Our second academic year enabled the Academy to embark in new directions. At the conclusion of the 1988 spring legislative session, the Academy's budget review process was transferred from the Illinois State Board of Education to the Illinois Board of Higher Education. We are grateful to all who have helped shape the Academy into the unique institution that it is today. We extend special thanks to Superintendent of Education Dr. Ted Sanders and the staff at the State Board of Education for their leadership. With their assistance and support, the Academy was able to achieve significant growth within a limited …

1986 Convocation Address, Leon Lederman Sep 1986

1986 Convocation Address, Leon Lederman

Documents

Fermiiab is full of scientists and engineers who work together with the common purpose of understanding nature, meeting difficult challenges and wisely spending a very large amount of public money. As Director of the Laboratory I sleep like a baby - I wake up every two hours and cry.

The dictionary says a convocation is an assembly of scholars, summoned together for some special purpose. The tradition no doubt got started in the great English universities - last week we read of the convocation at Harvard, celebrating the 350th anniversary of that great institution - and 350 is a nice …

Dormitory Ground-Breaking, Leon Lederman

Documents

I think I have participated in a lot of ground-breaking ceremonies. In 1968, I watched them dig the first shovel for the creation of Fermilab -- eighteen years ago. You wield a ceremonial shovel and go about your business and before you know it -- a building exists and you say -- "my God, where did the time go?" But it isn't the building that we are breaking ground for today -- it's the institution; the I.M.S.A. and it is here -- within this volume of space, in middle America -- that we will make history -- that legends will …

For The Governor's Commission On Science & Technology, Leon Lederman

Documents

1. Brief History

The idea grew out of the experience of Saturday Morning Phy9ic3 at Fermilab where we recognized that the exceptionally bright high school student was not being challenged by the generally good schools in the affluent suburbs.

An important event was a design workshop held on December of 1983 in which all the educational constituencies were represented: high schools, experts in gifted education, seven Illinois universities, community colleges, industrial research scientists, Fermilab and Argonne.

The proposal was formulated as a result of the curriculum design and presented to the Governor's Commission on Science and Technology and the Ta3k …

The Illinois Mathematics And Science Academy: A Philosophy, Leon Lederman

In establishing a' new kind of educational institution which is heavily dependent on public funding, it is incumbent to describe the goals and the means as clearly as possible. We do this here in several steps: We define the general objectives, the specifications and finally, the general philosophy.

It is our plan to assemble an outstanding staff of instructors, drawing from high schools, colleges and research laboratories. We expect to embellish the core staff with visitors on leave from other institutions and with a continuing stream of distinguished visitors.

Illinois Science Academy: A Proposal To The State Of Illinois, Corridor Partnership For Excellence In Education, Friends Of Fermilab

IMSA History

There is a widely recognized perception that the nation facing a crisis in fulfilling its needs for citizens trained in the fields of science, mathematics and technology. In particular, the State of Illinois has an obligation toward this national issue and to .its own need to develop these human resources that are so intimately coupled to economic leadership in a post-industrial society. This is a very broad challenge; here we propose to address only one important aspect: the nurturing of creative excellence in students of science and mathematics. We are concerned with the extraordinarily gifted person--the upper few tenths of …

Proposal To Establish A Public Middle School Academy, Leon Lederman Oct 1983

Proposal To Establish A Public Middle School Academy, Leon Lederman

Documents

The objectives of the Academy would be to accept gifted high school juniors and, in three years, provide students completely prepared to enter college as juniors.

It is proposed that the school be very strong in math-science, but it does not take too much thought to realize that it must be almost as strong in English, Social Studies and the Humanities. As a pilot project, an entrance class of 300 students per year with an average population of 800 students may represent a reasonable scale. Some of the virtues of this Academy, as contrasted with a Science High School, are …
