Celebrate LC call numbers if you use them to organize the physical books in your library. Innovate in how you explain them to new students and new library staff. Seven principles for explaining LC call numbers are introduced. A few highlights: (a) All library staff should collaborate in explaining call numbers to new people, with each member of the staff explaining the things about call numbers which they understand. (b) All library staff's understanding of call numbers should be principle-based, not merely experiential. (c) Catalogers should play a central role in teaching about and promoting call numbers. We may define and prioritize them differently, but few would deny that our human community is facing intractable problems at local, national, and global scales. We call on higher education institutions (HEIs) around the world to work collectively and with strategic intent and action to use sustainability as an organizing principle to focus service-learning and community engagement (SLCE) activities on the flourishing of our planet and its diverse species.

In their classic article, "Amazing, Magic Searches!" (Library Journal, Nov. 1st 2005, pp. 44-46) Kornegay, Buchanan, & Morgan show how subdivisions (phrases authorized by LC to be tacked on to subject headings) can be used to advantage in keyword searching in online library catalogs. Their first example: college sports and economic aspects. I work at a library which has replaced its free-standing online library catalog with OCLC Discovery Service -- a window into WorldCat which lets you limit your searches to materials in your library. Lost & Found is a strategy card-to-mobile game series that teaches medieval religious legal systems with attention to period accuracy and cultural and historical context.

The Lost & Found games project seeks to expand the discourse around religious legal systems, to enrich public conversations in a variety of communities, and to promote greater understanding of the religious traditions that build the fabric of the United States. Comparative religious literacy can build bridges between and within communities and prepare learners to be responsible citizens in our pluralist democracy.

As leadership training becomes more common in allied health professions curricula, efforts must be made to tailor training to student need. As such, understanding the frames through which health professions students view leadership is essential. According to Bolman and Deal, there are four leadership frames (human resource, structural, symbolic and political) and although most people access most readily one frame or another, the most effective leaders are able to access all four frames. The Effect Of Relevance Strategies On Student Perceptions Of Introductory Courses, Heather N. Fedesco, Ashley Kentner, Jane Natt

The purpose of this study was to test whether increasing the relevancy of course assignments in a large multi-section introductory public speaking course would lead to improvements in student perceptions of course outcomes. Survey responses from 1,878 students were analyzed to test whether differences exist between students enrolled in classes held during the Spring 2015 semester and those enrolled in classes held in Fall 2015 during which the more relevant course assignments were incorporated. Results reveal that increasing the relevancy of assignments is associated with greater perceived course relevance, motivation for participating in the class, and perceptions of learning. This …

Here we describe two projects that describe and study the effects of Change at the Core (C-Core), a professional development program for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) faculty and an institutional reform project for three interlinked institutions. One takes a classroom view, describing initial implementation of student-centered teaching in C-Core participants’ classrooms, and the other takes an institutional view, describing affordances and constraints of the Western Washington University (WWU), Whatcom Community College (WCC), and Skagit Valley College (SVC) collaboration.

Content teachers are also teachers of the language of that content. However, research has shown that teachers are neither knowledgeable nor confident in their ability to address the specific linguistic aspects of their content. This study examines how our ELL Endorsement program prepares teachers of different content areas, including elementary education, to become teachers of the language of that content.

Knowledge is no longer produced exclusively in the traditional class-based learning environment. For twenty-first century learners, digitally networked classrooms are the new social spaces where innovative learning perspectives are cultivated. However, like traditional class-based learning environments, digitally networked classrooms need to be sensitive to the social forces of race, gender, and class that will inescapably invade digital cultures. Therefore, even in the cloud, this chapter argues, “difference” as a concept is always already embedded as a contributing feature under which knowledge is constructed and constructing. Considering that as recently as 2014, school girls Chibok, Nigeria were abducted by Boko Haram, a Muslim fundamentalist terrorist group, one has to wonder about the correlation between the access to education, equality, safety, and opportunity. The College of St. Benedict and St. John’s University are private Catholic liberal arts institutions whose students enroll in single-sex institutions, but are provided co-educational learning experiences in the classroom. This article describes an integrative learning experience and details the planning, implementation, considerations, and benefits of creating a major-specific undergraduate research day. The event created an opportunity for students to gain confidence and practice discussing their work during research poster presentations. Studies of the publishing practices in mathematics education have situated sets of journals in tiers of quality. These reports document the rankings and prestige of only a subset of the wealth of journals available for publishing in mathematics education. We posit that there is value, quality, and purpose to be found in journals that present studies that are of value on a regional level, and that the studies are extremely important to the field.
