Brief 6: The Merit Aid Question: How Can We Attract Promising Students While Preserving Educational Opportunity For All?, New England Resource Center For Higher Education, University Of Massachusetts Boston

New England Resource Center for Higher Education Publications

NERCHE’s think tank members recently participated in a discussion of the competitive forces driving change in higher education. The discussion, facilitated by The Futures Project: Policy for Higher Education in a Changing World (www.futuresproject.org), revealed tremendous concern among faculty and administrators in New England about safeguarding the principles of equal access and equal educational opportunity during a time of accelerating competition for students. This is a crucial time for a reevaluation of barriers to full educational opportunity in this country. We need policies both at the institutional level and the state and federal levels to reverse the widening educational and …

In Spring of 2000 the Employment and Training Institute conducted a follow-up study of Milwaukee Public Schools students who had graduated in June of 1999 to determine their employment and schooling activities. The parents and guardians of all graduates were sent an introductory letter from the MPS Superintendent explaining the purpose of the study along with a written survey form. Families not responding to the initial mailing were contacted by phone during April and May of 2000. The majority of graduates reporting from the Class of 1999 were employed and almost half were enrolled in postsecondary education in the Spring …

Come ‘Rap’ With Us: Improving The Retention Of Academically-Qualified Persons (Rap) With Gpas Of 3.0 Or Higher, The Grace E. Harris Leadership Institute At Virginia Commonwealth University, Pamela Boston, Ruth Epps, Cynthia Kirkwood, John Ward

The Grace E. Harris Leadership Institute Publications

Retention is an important area of concern for Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU). This project involves devising initiatives to identify and retain students with a high potential for academic success as outlined in the Strategic Plan for the Future of Virginia Commonwealth University, Phase II. It is theorized that by concentrating efforts on students (both in-state and out-of-state) with a cummulative GPA of 3.0 or higher, an improvement in the six-year graduation and freshmen retention rates can be realized. This would serve to enhance VCU’s status in the academic community (moving from Tier 3 to Tier 2 status) since twenty percent …

Working Partnerships, Partnerships Working, The Grace E. Harris Leadership Institute At Virginia Commonwealth University, Robert Higgins, Catherine Howard, Njeri Jackson, Nancy Scott, Veronica Shuford

The Grace E. Harris Leadership Institute Publications

Involvement in community partnerships at Virginia Commonwealth University has its roots in the institution's history. The Medical College of Virginia, founded in1838, and the Richmond Professional Institute, founded in 1917, both sought to extend knowledge into the community to change peoples' lives for the better. Today, the VCU campuses are even more entwined with the City of Richmond -- physically, and increasingly so as a partner in the economic and social challenges and opportunities facing the City.

A Bridge To The Future: Cultivating Academic Leadership Today For Better Communities Tomorrow, The Grace E. Harris Leadership Institute At Virginia Commonwealth University, Ralph Clark, Jill Fox, Diane Reynolds, Elizabeth Waterhouse

The Grace E. Harris Leadership Institute Publications

The purpose of this project is to develop a plan for expanding and funding the Grace E. Harris Leadership Institute (GEHLI). Currently, teams of leadership scholars selected from Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) develop projects relating to the academic community in addition to studying the dynamics of effective leadership. Consistent with VCU's vision of partnering with and service to metropolitan Richmond, we propose that future teams of leadership scholars develop outreach projects that involve and benefit the local community. The training in which scholars would participate would include learning about the Richmond community, its needs and goals, as well as the …

Publications and Research

Using our experiences as members of a participatory action research committee (from the City University of New York Graduate Center and the Bedford Hills Correctional Facility) documenting the impact of college in a maximum security prison, this essay illustrates the power of Participatory Action Research in the construction of counter stories. We raise for discussion a set of theoretical, methodological and ethical challenges that emerged from the co-production of counter stories under surveillance: the creation of a critical space for producing 'counter knowledge'; the co-mingling of counter and dominant discourses, the negotiation of power over and within research in prison, …
