Mathematics As Thinking. A Response To “Democracy And School Math”, Kasi C. Allen
Mathematics As Thinking. A Response To “Democracy And School Math”, Kasi C. Allen
Democracy and Education
Math education in the United States remains resistant to systemic change, and our country pays the price. Stemhagen's article "Democracy and School Math" further confirms this trend. Despite repeated calls for reform, decades of research on how people learn, millions of dollars invested in teacher professional development, and years of politicized debate, the math wars rage on—between those who believe students have the capacity to construct their own mathematical ideas and others who insist mastery of the traditional canon must come first. Meanwhile, algebra failure among secondary students remains rampant and elementary education majors report the greatest rates of math …

In the childhood game of "rock-paper-scissors", two participants select one of three different gestures. The selected gestures are then compared using the following rule set: rock crushes scissors, scissors cuts paper, and paper covers rock. Ties are broken by repeating the game as needed. The game can be played until the first winner is determined, or in repeated rounds (e.g. best two out of three)...

The Modern Language Association’s (MLA) urgent appeal for the restructuring of the undergraduate language curriculum, “Foreign Languages and Higher Education: New Structures for a Changed World,” emphasizes a need for language departments to enrich their upper-division course offerings beyond the traditional literary studies model in order to attract and retain broader interest in language learning among students with diverse academic interests and needs. Citing the National Science Foundation’s 2003 Survey of College Graduates, it stresses that only 6.1% of undergraduates whose primary major is a foreign language later achieve doctorate degrees and concludes that departments should provide upper-division language courses …

Feeling, Experiencing, Learning: Environmental Education At Escola Vila, Isabelle Aida Heilman
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
Teaching children about the importance of the protecting environment is a key step in preparing future generations to solve environmental issues. The purpose of this paper is to describe and analyze how Escola Vila in Fortaleza, Brazil integrates environmental education into its curriculum to promote positive environmental actions later in the children’s lives. Classroom observations revealed how environmental education is incorporated into the curriculum in an interdisciplinary way. Students at Escola Vila learn about the environment through creative projects, experiential learning, sustainable practices on the campus and human rights education. Interviews with alumni showed that these four ways that Escola …

Beyond Multiple Regression: Using Commonality Analysis To Better Understand R2 Results, Russell Warne
Beyond Multiple Regression: Using Commonality Analysis To Better Understand R2 Results, Russell Warne
Russell T Warne
Multiple regression is one of the most common statistical methods used in quantitative educational research. Despite the versatility and easy interpretability of multiple regression, it has some shortcomings in the detection of suppressor variables and for somewhat arbitrarily assigning values to the structure coefficients of correlated independent variables. Commonality analysis—heretofore rarely used in gifted education research—is a statistical method that partitions the explained variance of a dependent variable into nonoverlapping parts according to the independent variable(s) that are related to each portion. This Methodological Brief includes an example of commonality analysis and equations for researchers who wish to conduct their …
Risk-Based Critical Infrastructure Protection Priorities For Emp And Solar Storms, George H. Baker Iii
Risk-Based Critical Infrastructure Protection Priorities For Emp And Solar Storms, George H. Baker Iii
George H Baker
The Commission to Assess the Threat to the United States from Electromagnetic Pulse Attack has provided a compelling case for protecting civilian infrastructure against the effects of EMP. As with protecting infrastructure against any hazard, it will be important to take a risk-based priority approach for EMP, recognizing that it is fiscally impracticable to protect everything. In this regard, EMP is particularly challenging in that it interferes with electrical and electronic data, control, transmission, and communication systems organic to nearly all infrastructures in a simultaneous and wide-scale manner. And, for nuclear burst altitudes of 100s of kilometers, the exposed geography …

How To Make Teaching Of Statistics More Effective In Business Schools?, Kuldeep Kumar
Kuldeep Kumar
Statistics is taught in almost all Business Schools as a core course and prerequisite to may advance economics, finance and accountancy courses. However, Statistics has to be taught in a different way in Business Schools as compared to how it is taught in their own statistics department. There should be more emphasis on applications in Business area rather than theory. There has been lot of interest in teaching of statistics in Business schools for a very long time, for example see Cox (1965), Moore (1976) and Love and Hildebrand (2002). This paper discusses author's experience of teaching statistics in an …

The Human Computer Interaction Issues Associated With The Creation Of Personalized Role Playing Simulations, Eileen O'Donnell, Catherine Mulwa, Mary Sharp, Vincent Wade
Eileen O'Donnell
The human computer interaction issues associated with the creation of personalized role playing simulations are discussed in this paper. This paper is aimed at those who are interested in building authoring applications which enable educators to build role playing simulated e-learning resources to use with their students. One of the main issues which have come to our attention is that many learning designers and educators do not understand what exactly it is we are trying to achieve by creating personalized role playing simulations. Also, how to gauge the pedagogic merits which can be achieved by using these e-learning resources. Potential …
Multiplicative Noise For Masking Numerical Microdata Data With Constraints, Anna Oganian
Multiplicative Noise For Masking Numerical Microdata Data With Constraints, Anna Oganian
Department of Mathematical Sciences Faculty Publications
Before releasing databases which contain sensitive information about individuals, statistical agencies have to apply Statistical Disclosure Limitation (SDL) methods to such data. The goal of these methods is to minimize the risk of disclosure of the confidential information and at the same time provide legitimate data users with accurate information about the population of interest. SDL methods applicable to the microdata (i. e. collection of individual records) are often called masking methods. In this paper, several multiplicative noise masking schemes are presented. These schemes are designed to preserve positivity and inequality constraints in the data together with the vector of …

Exploring The Effectiveness Of Environmentally Sustainable Practices In Municipal Government: A Case Study Of The City Of Knoxville’S Department Of Parks And Recreation, Anthony Michael Brown
Masters Theses
Sustainability practices produce programs and services that meet current needs while preserving the environment and natural resources for the future. City parks and recreation departments are facing budget shortfalls and increasing expectations from customers. Governments are now embracing sustainability practices to create financial savings while also fostering relations with customers.
The purpose of this single case study was twofold: (1) to examine the effectiveness of one city department’s strategies in outsourcing its environmental sustainability program through a performance contract with Ameresco; and (2) to examine the perceptions of key department employees about the effectiveness of the sustainability initiative. A …

Chemical Education Experiences From The English Language Learner Perspective, Annette Flores
Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA
The Rio Grande Valley (RGV) is a region populated by Spanish-speaking immigrants and their descendants producing a large English Language Learner (ELL) student population. ELLs have historically had low literacy rates and achievement levels when compared to their counterparts. In order to address this achievement gap, previous research efforts and curriculum interventions have focused on language acquisition as being the determining factor in ELL education, with little attention given to academic content acquisition. More current research efforts have transitioned into English language acquisition through academic content instruction; this present research study specifically focuses on ELL experiences in chemistry. Participants were …

Emp: A Brief Tutorial, George H. Baker Iii
Emp: A Brief Tutorial, George H. Baker Iii
George H Baker
A nuclear detonation at altitudes from about 30 to 500 kilometers generates a strong electromagnetic pulse (EMP) that propagates to points on the ground within the line-of-sight of the burst. For bursts above 100 kilometers, electronics can be affected over continental scale areas. The EMP induces large voltages and currents in antennas and cables of electronic systems that will upset operation or damage circuit components if protection measures are not present. The article provides a brief tutorial on EMP environments, effects and protection.
High Power Electromagnetic Weapons: A Brief Tutorial, George H. Baker Iii
High Power Electromagnetic Weapons: A Brief Tutorial, George H. Baker Iii
George H Baker
High power electromagnetic weapons, also referred to as high power radiofrequency (HPRF) weapons, are a type of directed energy weapons. The system effects of high power electromagnetic environments are well recognized by world scientific and military communities. Former CIA Director John Deutch has said that, "the electron is the ultimate precision-guided weapon." In the course of the investigation ofnuclear EMP effects on electronics during the Cold War period, it became evident that garden variety, unprotected electronics would malfunction, in some cases burn out, in the presence of electromagnetic fields in the hundreds to thousands of volts per meter. The EMP …

A Mathematician Weighs In On The Evolution Debate, Kris H. Green
Journal of Humanistic Mathematics
There are a variety of reasons underlying the lack of public acceptance for the theory of evolution in the United States. An overlooked cause is related to problems with the mathematics curriculum in the K-12 setting. In this essay, we examine this relationship and propose changes to the mathematics curriculum that could improve mathematical thinking while also providing a basis for understanding theories, like evolution, that are poorly understood.
