"Terrorism" is a term that cannot be given a stable defintion. Or rather, it can, but to do so forstalls any attempt to examine the major feature of its relation to television in the contemporary world. As the central public arena for organising ways of picturing and talking about social and political life, TV plays a pivotal role in the contest between competing defintions, accounts and explanations of terrorism. Which term is used in any particular context is inextricably tied to judgemements about the legitimacy of the action in question and of the political system against which it is directed. …

Potential Driven Polyelectrolyte Adsorption Onto Monolayer Modified Electrodes, Mark Anderson, Weslie Sanders

Preparation of interfacial structures by molecular self-assembly has been actively studied for many years. Well-defined modified interfaces can be used to study fundamental interfacial properties, or they can be used in different practical applications. To broaden the utility of interfaces prepared by molecular self-assembly, monolayers containing terminal functionality are frequently used. These interfaces have structural and physical properties that can be controlled by both the identity of the functionalization as well as the ensemble structure of the modified interface. This suggests that the chemical and physical properties of an interface can be designed and/or controlled to some extent by altering …

Homogeneous Dbd In N2: 1) Lif, Talif And Electrical Measurements, N. Gherardi, Et. Es-Sebbar, C. Sarra-Bourret, N. Naudé, F. Massines

In this paper we compare two different discharges that can be obtained in a DBD configuration, that is to say the filamentary discharge (usual regime in atmospheric DBD) with the Atmospheric Pressure Townsend Discharge (APTD), which is a homogeneous regime obtained in nitrogen atmosphere. The aim is to help in the understanding of the processes which control the transition from one regime to the other. To do so, the discharge is characterized through electrical measurements, coupled with optical diagnostics among which Laser Induced Fluorescence (LIF) for radical density measurements. The influence of the addition of small quantities of additives on …

Recent U.S. high consequence events have made clear the importance of government collaboration with industry. The benefits of such collaboration were clearly seen as a lesson from Hurricane Katrina. The resources owned and controlled by American industry dwarf those available to local, state and even the federal government departments. Better agreements and incentives to bring the full capabilities of industry squarely into the national response agenda will be indispensable in effectively responding to large-scale catastrophes. General Russel Honoré who led the National Guard response to Katrina has said, “We need the partnering between local, state, and federal governments; but the …

Location-Based Intelligence – Modeling Behavior In Humans Using Gps, Katina Michael, Andrew Mcnamee, M G. Michael, Holly Tootell
Professor Katina Michael
This paper introduces the notion of location-based intelligence by tracking the spatial properties and behavior of a single civilian participant over a two-week study period using a global positioning system (GPS) receiver, and displaying them on a geographic information system (GIS). The paper clearly shows the power of combining speed (S), distance (D), time (T) and elevation (E) data with the exact longitude and latitude position of the user. The issues drawn from the observation and the civilian’s personal diary are useful in understanding the social implications of tracking and monitoring objects and subjects using GPS. The findings show that …

The purpose of this research is to see how students are engaged emotionally, behaviorally, and cognitively in different types of math lessons. Shernoff, Csikszentmihalyi, Schneider, and Shernoff (2003) found that students had a higher quality of experience (mood, esteem, intensity, and motivation) when they were involved in individual or group work. This study analyzed transcriptions, observations and student work from three pre-calculus lessons, a survey about students’ engagement in different types of lessons and an open-ended survey about the researcher’s teaching style. The results of the study were that students enjoy and are more engaged in lessons that require the …

Reading Rainbow: Assessing Effectiveness In Literacy Technology, Liz Russ, Erin Meehan
Leah A. Nillas
“Children’s Television Workshop and the University of Nebraska created a program, ‘Reading Rainbow’ to promote recreational reading in early readers” (Tarnauskas, 1995). Since its creation, this literacy technology has thrilled and delighted first and second grade audiences, but little to no research has been done on the effectiveness of this program. What is the outcome of the Reading Rainbow program on students’ literacy? This research study investigated the effect of the Reading Rainbow program on literacy of 21 diverse first grade students. Data was obtained through qualitative methods including observations and focus group interviews with students, as well as interviews …

In this paper we report a regioselective Bingel−Hirsch reaction of Sc3N@C78 yielding a single mono- and a dominate bis-ethyl malonate derivative for the first time. The Cs-symmetric monoadduct 1 and C2v-symmetric bisadduct 2 were isolated by HPLC and characterized by MS, UV−vis, and NMR spectroscopy. The symmetric bisadduct 2 clearly demonstrate the remarkable regioselectivity control exerted by the encapsulated Sc3N cluster. We have employed a LUMO electron density surface computational approach to predict multiadduct docking sites on the ellipsoidal fullerene cage surface.

Rounds, Levels, And Waves: The Early Evolution Of Gameplay Segmentation, Jose Zagal, Clara Fernandez-Vara, Michael Mateas
Jose P Zagal
This article explores the early evolution of the structure and management of gameplay in videogames. We introduce the notion of gameplay segmentation to capture the role that design elements like level, boss, and wave play in videogames, and identify three modes of segmentation. Temporal segmentation limits, synchronizes and/or coordinates player activity over time. Spatial segmentation breaks the game’s virtual space into sub-locations. Challenge segmentation presents the player with a sequence of self-contained challenges. We describe each mode, and additional sub-modes, by analyzing vintage arcade games. Our analyses illustrate how these games represent a “primordial soup” in which many current game …

Cascading Infrastructure Failures: Avoidance And Response, George H. Baker, Cheryl J. Elliott
Cascading Infrastructure Failures: Avoidance And Response, George H. Baker, Cheryl J. Elliott
George H Baker
No critical infrastructure is self-sufficient. The complexity inherent in the interdependent nature of infrastructure systems complicates planning and preparedness for system failures. Recent wide-scale disruption of infrastructure on the Gulf Coast due to weather, and in the Northeast due to electric power network failures, dramatically illustrate the problems associated with mitigating cascading effects and responding to cascading infrastructure failures once they have occurred.
The major challenge associated with preparedness for cascading failures is that they transcend system, corporate, and political boundaries and necessitate coordination among multiple, disparate experts and authorities. This symposium brought together concerned communities including government and industry …
