The Use Of Junior Historical Fiction In The Classroom, Darlene Pelinka Aug 1972

The Use Of Junior Historical Fiction In The Classroom, Darlene Pelinka

Dissertations and Theses

The use of American historical fiction in an eighth grade social studies or language arts class has not been fully explored, so its literary and social science value is questionable. In order to establish its worth and methods for its use, research into desirable 1iterary goals for adolescents, implications and purposes of historical fiction in general and for youth in particular, a bibliography of novels, and an evaluative survey of specific novels written for youth needed to be done.

The research indicates that some critics believe that most junior novels have little to offer youth and that they are poorly …

A Study Of Secondary School Students' Right To Free Expression As Granted By The First Amendment To The United States Constitution, Sharon Elain Wenzl Wright

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

The investigator studied the application of the First Amendment of the United States Constitution to secondary school students' right to free expression. The investigator examined landmark cases such as Tinker v Des Moines Independent Community School District in order to depict the historical development of extending constitutional rights to secondary school students.

The study encompasses both landmark cases (those cases involving highly significant decisions that established a precedent) and relevant cases which led to the present judicial posture regarding secondary students' right to free expression. Findings of the case study reveal the present judiciary standard to rest on the application …

A Survey Of The Fifty States To Determine Design Standards For The Multiple Car Method, Donaldson Martin Carnahan Jan 1972

A Survey Of The Fifty States To Determine Design Standards For The Multiple Car Method, Donaldson Martin Carnahan

All Master's Theses

A survey of the supervisors of traffic safety education programs of the fifty states was conducted to determine what, if any, design standards or guidelines were imposed upon school districts when designing multiple-car facilities for use in traffic safety education programs.

From the information gathered it is apparent that many states are improving the pupil-teacher ratio through the inclusion of the multiple-car methods of instruction and thereby reducing the cost of the traffic safety education programs.

However, only two states, Texas and Minnesota, had well-defined minimum standards for the design and approval of such facilities in approved programs. Georgia and …

Identification Of Experiences In Applied Biological Science And Agribusiness Of Seventh Grade Students, Roy D. Dillon, University Of Nebraska W. Walker Jan 1972

Identification Of Experiences In Applied Biological Science And Agribusiness Of Seventh Grade Students, Roy D. Dillon, University Of Nebraska W. Walker

Department of Agricultural Leadership, Education, and Communication: Faculty Publications

In a study to identify the applied biological science-oriented experiences of seventh grade students and to describe student aspirations for future study of applied biological and agribusiness subjects, a random sample of 1,286 7th-grade students was selected in Nebraska. The sample represented l0.l% of the 7th-grade students in Nebraska in 1970, and was selected by drawing a 5% random sample of schools within each of 8 mutually-exclusive class groupings as defined by the Nebraska State Department of Education.

It is clearly evident from the results described that 7th-grade students in Nebraska have gained considerable exploratory experiences through formal and informal …

A Comparison Of Third Grade Reading Practices, Objectives, And Achievment Test Results Between A Conventional Program And A Behavioral Objective Approach Program, Charles Henry Massey

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

The study was concerned with investigating student achievement testing results, age and sex differences, and teaching practices between a behavioral objective type program and a convetional type program (arbitrarily defined) for the teaching of reading to third grade children as measured by standardized test instruments.

Thirty-one third grade students (16 boys and 15 girls) in the experimental class, with a median age of eight years, were compared with a control class of 33 students (19 boys and 14 girls), with a median age of nine years, as available small samples. Both groups were taught by one teacher.

The instructional materials …

A Program For The Training Of Elementary Art-Music Teachers, Edward A. Boynton Jan 1972

A Program For The Training Of Elementary Art-Music Teachers, Edward A. Boynton

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

The writer has had experience as a supervisor of music at the elementary and secondary levels. This experience combined with the development of courses to suit the program for an elementary teacher training institution provided the background for the development of this project.

The problem, as it appeared to the writer, was that in spite of valiant efforts on the part of music supervisors and art teachers’ elementary students did not comprehend music or art as an aesthetic whole. The methods in use, in most Maine schools, presented the arts as a technical skill to be mastered by the student …
