An Historical Analysis Of The Development Of Teacher Training At The State Normal School, Farmville, Virginia, 1884-1924, Betty Jo Whitaker Simmons

The purpose of this study was to trace the development of teacher training at the Virginia State Normal School located at Farmville from its inception in 1884 through 1924 when it became a State Teachers College. The study focused upon seven characteristics identified by Charles Harper in 1939 as being typical of the developmental history of normal schools. Following these seven characteristics as a framework, the study analyzed the contributions made toward the professionalization of teaching by (1) presidents, trustees, and faculty; (2) public support; (3) in-service education; (4) curriculum provision; (5) laboratory experiences; (6) extra-curriculum offerings; and (7) pragmatic …

Daniel Boorstin claimed in 1962 that for twentieth-century Americans, "fact or fantasy, the image becomes the thing." The 1980s abound with governors promising education reform in their states, activities underscored by the August 1986 National Governors' Association education report, Time for Results. Thus, the image of the "Education Governor" has become the fashionable "thing." But does fact or fantasy lie beneath the surface of this image? This research probes that question through considering (1) the extent to which specific educational measures proposed in Inaugural and State of the State Addresses of twenty modern-day "Education Governors" correspond with their subsequent actions …

The purposes of the study was to examine selected factors that were influential in the decline of the University College of Medicine (UCM) in Richmond, Virginia, from 1893 to 1913. UCM was created in the midst of a national medical reform movement. In ways, the institution directly contributed to the reform of medical training in Virginia.;It was the writer's contention that the decline of UCM happened because of the political pressures emerging from medical accrediting agencies, licensing and examining boards, and related organizations. This dissertation was written to examine the hypothesis that, although there were numerous factors affecting the selection of a site, it was primarily a financial decision to maintain the urban environment of the former Richmond Professional Institute campus as the basis of the new Academic Campus of Virginia Commonwealth University. Other factors involved in the decision include political, historical, social and academic ones.;The political factor involved a division between the City of Richmond and the County of Henrico as to the location of the Academic Campus of Virginia Commonwealth University. An Investigation Into Current Evangelical College Secularization, William Arthur Wilson

This study investigated the claim that some of the academically best evangelical colleges are in the process of secularizing. An instrument was developed which differentiated between evangelical and more liberal positions on religious, social, and political issues. Faculty attitudes were measured as representative of a particular college's position.;In Phase I, the DISCRIMINANT Program of the SPSS produced a predictor equation based on those questionnaire items which best discriminated between a stratified, random sample of faculty at known evangelical colleges and a similar sample at known secularized, church-related institutions. The purpose of this study was to determine whether Army ROTC cadets who enter the Advanced Course differ significantly in certain selected variables from cadets who choose to terminate the ROTC program with the Basic Course. Using theoretical constructs from Schoenherr's and Greeley's (1974) General Role Commitment Model and the Card et al. (1975) ROTC/Army Career Commitment Model, a prediction model was developed for the present study, the ROTC Continuation Model. The major purpose of this study was to examine the Virginia Teachers Association as a force for educational change in Virginia. The study involved (1) an examination of the primary purposes of the association and their relationship to its educational goals and programs, (2) a review of the forces that generated educational change in Virginia during the period 1940-1965, (3) a survey of the contributions of two of the organization's most influential leaders, and (4) an examination of the process involved in merging Virginia's black and white teachers associations. This study relates the history of The College of William and Mary in Virginia during the first twenty-seven years of the nineteenth century, 1800-1827, and examines the history in terms of the leadership provided for the College for the purpose of determining whether or not the College experienced a loss of leadership during the period of the study.
