A study of student participation in extra-curricular activities in the Ellensburg Junior and Senior High Schools was thought advisable in view of the increased attention and study being devoted to this area throughout the nation. Leading educators have implied that such activities are a significant part of any school system. The amount of light needed to produce the most efficient work is still subject to controversy. An adequate amount is recommended by everyone, but the definition of adequate varies as is evidenced in the amount of foot-candles suggested. But the emphasis now has shifted from "how much light should we have" to "how well can we see." Quantity and quality may now be regarded as the twin requirements for good lighting. The improvement of school environment presents a different problem in each school. The problem facing the Ellensburg School District is one of providing more and better school housing. The purpose of this survey is to find out the condition of the present buildings, to make recommendations for improvements and alterations to the existing structures, to point out the needs for future building expansion. This survey is based on the results of an actual school census undertaken during November of this year.

The aim of this study is to record the growth of the public schools of Durango, Colorado, from 1881 to 1944. It is a chronological history, with stress on the problems encountered with the establishing and developing of the school system. The biographies of the schools' administrators, found in the appendix, have a part in explaining the growth and achievements of the Durango Schools.

The material in this school history offers lessons to the educator and the layman. Since no two public schools travel exactly the same path of growth, a narrative of an additional school system adds some practical …

The majority of studies of non-attendance heve dealt with the entire student body of a school system where the pupils come from many racial or national groups with different economic, social, and cultural backgrounds. In studies where the same racial group was selected the physical environment or the social or economic status of the students differed widely. A wide field of study leaves many questions unanswered or problematical. It is the purpose of the author to confine this study to one racial group.

Some explanation is necessary of the method of procedure in compiling material for this thesis. The first step was really taken seven years ago. At that time the writer interviewed state officials at Sacramento, California, in the hope of obtaining state aid for educational finance in the Tule Lake section of the Klamath Irrigation Project. The Governor, the department of education, and the finance department were all consulted, but no legal way was discovered of using state money for the erection of school buildings in the district mentioned.
