The nursing workforce is aging along with the rest of the American population. In 2012, RNs in their 50's will be the largest age group in the nursing workforce. Who will replace them?

New nurses come from nursing schools. Nursing schools have a steady number of applicants. However, thousands of qualified nursing school applicants are turned away. One reason for denying admission is an inadequate number of nursing faculty to support the number of qualified nursing school applicants.

An online epidemiology course was developed, implemented, and evaluated for graduate nursing students through the collaborative efforts of nursing faculty and information, education, and instructional design staff of the library at a health sciences university. This epidemiology course is a core curriculum course for graduate nursing students. The course was piloted with 14 students (one student in Romania); the initial online offering ran concurrently with a traditional classroom section. Extensive evaluation data were collected and analyzed to compare the effectiveness of the classroom and distance-learning formats. The development of a new nursing curriculum in one Australian university provided the opportunity for academic staff to consider the best ways to integrate the requirements of evidence-based practice (EBP) into nursing education and culminated in the development and conduct of a specific benchmarking project. Data collection for the project included the use of university documents, observations and informal discussions with staff. An analysis of this information resulted in the emergence of five categories that were grouped into two major categories, namely infrastructure and processes.
