Academic Service-Learning Experience Embraces The Vincentian Mission In Physician Assistant Education, Alyssa Quinlan, Pamela Gregory-Fernandez, Corinne Alois, Carla Hernandez Goodman

Journal of Vincentian Social Action

Motivated by the belief that health care is a basic human right and driven by a Vincentian mission, St. John’s University Physician Assistant Program incorporates service minded educational experiences created to expose students to the necessity to reach those most in need—“the poor, alienated and the aged.” In Spring 2018, in conjunction with the SJU Academic Service-Learning program, a geriatric service assignment was integrated into the geriatric course curriculum. Working with Selfhelp Virtual Senior Center, local senior centers and nursing homes, students participated in an outreach project to serve senior citizens. Students shared their experiences through reflection and pre- …

Quality Advancement in Nursing Education - Avancées en formation infirmière

Background: The various pressures on nurses in their practice environment, given the complexity of care, have exposed the confusion around the role definition and level of professional identity (PI) of future nurses. To support them in their practice, it is important throughout their education to know their commitment, representations, and sense of identity with respect to their future profession. To our knowledge, there is no measurement tool in the literature that can be used to measure the PI of nursing students throughout their education, given its complex multidimensional nature.

Objective: Based on a framework that takes into account …

The Role Of Using Formative Assessments In Problem-Based Learning: A Health Sciences Education Perspective, Kristi W. Kelley, Julaine M. Fowlin, Andrew A. Tawfik, Max C. Anderson

Interdisciplinary Journal of Problem-Based Learning

Practitioners in the field of pharmacy are often confronted with ill-structured problems. Specifically, pharmacists are tasked with making patient-specific recommendations that are both safe and effective, which requires combining knowledge from the biomedical, behavioral, and pharmaceutical sciences. Given the dynamic nature of pharmacy as a profession, the field has begun to explore learning strategies that go beyond mere content coverage to strategies that better support higher-order learning outcomes. One of these approaches is problem-based learning (PBL). While studies have focused on how to support PBL to improve learning outcomes, the role of assessment is often overlooked. Further exploration is thus …

Patient Experience Journal

Patient engagement is essential to improve outcomes and reduce healthcare costs. This study aimed to examine the socio-demographic factors associated with one’s capacity to engage in their health care. An observational, cross-sectional study was performed including patients from five medical/surgical units of four health systems. Patients’ engagement capacity was assessed using the person engagement index (PEI) instrument which contains four subscales: engagement in health care, technology use in health care, proactive approach to health care, and psychosocial support for health care. Separate general linear models were applied for the PEI total score and each of the four subscale scores. Our …

Listen To Us: Dad-Endorsed Strategies For Ehdi Professionals, Holly F. Pedersen Dr., Jerusha Olthoff

Journal of Early Hearing Detection and Intervention

While fathers play an increasingly important role in today’s families, there is an imbalance of research regarding fathers of children with disabilities compared to mothers. Modest research with mothers of children who are deaf/hard of hearing exists; however, very limited research is available specific to fathers of that population. With the advent of newborn hearing screening, the number of children who have hearing loss being identified within the first six months of life has significantly increased. Thus, the number of fathers participating in EHDI services has also increased. Seeking to answer the question, What do fathers’ experiences in the early …
