Too often incoming students leave library orientation sessions feeling overwhelmed and overstressed, which results in the library becoming one more intimidating obstacle to them. However, this does not need to be the case. Visual literacy and visual culture can be leveraged to engage students and improve library orientation sessions.

Searching for information, which is not as easy as many students believe, requires creativity, formative evaluation, and persistence. Cultivating proficient and expert searches requires more than the vicarious and enactive experiences described by Bandura1 that are frequently employed in traditional library instruction: students need to be supported and coached in working in their Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD), which stimulates learning.2

On June 8, 2015, the intact and reconstructed vessels from the George C. Davis site (41CE19) were scanned (3D) in advance of an analysis of 3D geometric morphometrics. These data were collected using a Creaform GoSCAN50 running VXElements via the scanner direct control function in Geomagic Design X. All data associated with this project are available in Zenodo under a Creative Commons Attribution license, where they can be downloaded for use in additional projects. This presentation elaborates on a 4-day regional disaster and preservation planning workshop held at the R. W. Steen Library May 14-17, 2012. It was funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities and brought 23 people from 11 different organizations together to learn about disaster and preservation planning from a Northeast Document and Conservation Center consultant. The PowerPoint explains the program director's thinking at all stages of the grant process—conceptualization, implementation and assessment.

Stephen F. Austin State University supports a large education department that offers degrees in teaching, human sciences, human services, and educational leadership through the doctoral level. The university library’s documents collection includes monthly Bulletins published by the Texas State Department of Education from 1918-1946. The documents present an intriguing glimpse at the development of education between the two World Wars. Since they are old and in fragile condition, it was decided that the documents would become an interesting and useful research collection if preserved digitally and made available electronically.
