Students’ Perceived Influence Of Library Services In Secondary Schools In Kwara State, Nigeria., Yusuf Suleiman, Zahyah Hanafi, Thanslikan Muhajir 4508666
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
It is often said that students’ effective learning cannot be acquired through classrooms activities alone, they refer to school library information resources to complement what they have been taught. In view of the foregoing, this study examines students’ perceived influence of library services in secondary schools in Kwara State, Nigeria. The study population consists of 27,883 students in secondary schools (public and private). Multistage and systematic random sampling techniques were used to select 378 students across the 16 local governments drawn from the three senatorial districts that formed the state. An instrument titled “School Library Questionnaire (SLQ)” was used to …

Throwing The Doors Wide Open: The Library’S Role In Fostering Accessibility, Christina Wray
Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
Libraries play a variety of important roles, but perhaps the most important is as a place where ALL members of our communities are welcomed. But, what does it really mean to be inclusive? How do we encourage our patrons to be inclusive outside the library walls? What impact are we having in the lives of our patrons? In this session we will explore how we can facilitate an inclusive mindset in our libraries and our communities.

Future And Value: The Library As Strategic Partner, Antje Mays
Library Presentations
Broader economic trends spawn budget pressures for education and libraries, prompting a plethora of studies on the value and relevance of libraries. Numerous reports on economic decline in libraries and studies with mixed pronouncements on the value of libraries have led to a negative self-image within the library profession. Yet libraries' leadership in connecting learners to knowledge is at the heart of producing many of the key skills sorely needed in robust societies and economies. Librarianship has many untapped opportunities for positioning itself as a prominent strategic partner. This paper outlines current research on the economic and societal context for …

Making Outreach The Library’S Mission, April Miller
Making Outreach The Library’S Mission, April Miller
Faculty Articles & Research
University and community outreach is an important part of library services, which fosters cohesiveness while involving adequate community support. This paper examines how outreach has become an important part of the library’s mission. Many outreach examples include the partnering of libraries with university departments, offices, and organizations. Other examples include university libraries partnering with community groups, museums, and non-profits. Currently outreach projects are carried out across all libraries, however, a greater emphasis is placed on the recent outreach accomplished at Southwestern Oklahoma State University Libraries.

Research For Non-Profits, A Service Learning Class In Grantseeking Research, Alyssa Wright
Research For Non-Profits, A Service Learning Class In Grantseeking Research, Alyssa Wright
Faculty & Staff Scholarship
This chapter describes Research for Non-Profits a 300/500 level service-learning course that introduces non-profits and grantseeking while teaching research and information literacy skills. Students in the course create a funder research portfolio for a non-profit client with a funding need. As students draft, revise, and polish the portfolios, they hone their research skills as well as engage with larger information literacy concepts, particularly the value of information, information creation as a process, and how authority is constructed and contextual. The chapter describes the course’s long development road as well as how partnerships were built, not only with the campus center …

A Storied Tale: Melding Digital Storytelling, Service-Learning, And Digital And Information Literacy Skills For Pre-Service Teachers, Heather K. Beirne
EKU Faculty and Staff Scholarship
Today’s teachers, a diverse body of individuals with a variety of technological backgrounds and skill sets, often find themselves working from a “digital immigrant” perspective. Even pre-service teachers, who may be classified as digital natives, report “strong positive beliefs in technology, yet moderate confidence and reserved attitude in using technology” (Lei, 2009); Lei reports that, though they are often viewed as “innovative users of available technology and eager adopters of new technology,” pre-service teachers are also not utilizing digital technology to its fullest advantage, self-report that they do not feel comfortable with or proficient at the use of higher level …

A vision to further national development through higher education now informs planning for the University for Business and Technology Knowledge Center. At its essence, the Center aims to make local knowledge visible through furthering discovery of and access to research content produced by academic students and university professors on institutional, local and international levels. This paper reports on conceptual exploration of this institutional idea during spring semester 2017 in a graduate course on systems thinking and methodology. Using active learning pedagogy to improve local situations, an international teaching team facilitated student and stakeholder engagement in participatory design activities using soft …

A Textbook Program Is Not For Us: Re-Imagining Failure Into New Possibilities, Heidi Blackburn, Tammi Owens
Criss Library Faculty Proceedings & Presentations
Sometimes, despite all our efforts, projects fail. We’re here to tell you that’s okay. Last year, we came to NLA to report about the creation of our textbook pilot project. What we didn’t share was that we weren’t sure it would work out. We were optimistic, though. After all, we had plenty of evidence that said it would work: our literature review had examples of successful textbook programs. Our data showed textbook prices rising. We met with advisors across our campus who said students desperately needed textbooks to succeed. We had buy-in from library administrators, the bookstore, and student government …

The Status Of Women In Stem In Higher Education: A Literature Review 2007-2017, Heidi Blackburn, Tarun Chaturvedi
Criss Library Faculty Proceedings & Presentations
Use Google to search “Women in STEM in higher education” and see what comes up. What if you were an administrator trying to write a grant to recruit female students in IT? Or an instructor trying to advise a student club for women in computer science? In recent years, the spotlight on STEM education has given rise to hundreds of studies ranging from the recruitment and retention of women students to the workplace climate of women faculty and staff. This information was not easily available in one location for use in reports, press releases, curriculum, or grants. Through a Carnegie-Whitney …

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
Libraries not only acquire, organize, retrieve and disseminate information but also provide some services such as references services, current awareness, selective dissemination of information, document delivery services and inter-library loan services. Others include internet, audiovisual, reprographic, customer relation and user education services. The sole aim of these services is to satisfy the information needs of the users and clienteles of the library. The catholic religious who are studying to become priests have information needs not only for their academics but also for their pastoral training, which is given a greater priority towards their eligibility as priests. Therefore, they need to …

The Effectiveness Of Journals As Arbiters Of Scientific Impact, C. E. Timothy Paine, Charles W. Fox
The Effectiveness Of Journals As Arbiters Of Scientific Impact, C. E. Timothy Paine, Charles W. Fox
Entomology Faculty Publications
Academic publishers purport to be arbiters of knowledge, aiming to publish studies that advance the frontiers of their research domain. Yet the effectiveness of journal editors at identifying novel and important research is generally unknown, in part because of the confidential nature of the editorial and peer review process. Using questionnaires, we evaluated the degree to which journals are effective arbiters of scientific impact on the domain of Ecology, quantified by three key criteria. First, journals discriminated against low‐impact manuscripts: The probability of rejection increased as the number of citations gained by the published paper decreased. Second, journals were more …
