A Class Legacy, University Of Maine Foundation

General University of Maine Publications

Classes endowing scholarships is a long tradition at the University of Maine, with just over 110 endowed class scholarships going back to the Class of 1906. Some classes, like the Class of 1944, have more than one scholarship, each targeting support for students in specific areas of study such as music and theatre. Other class scholarships, like the Class of 1989 give preference to descendants of class members, allowing study at the University of Maine to become a proud family tradition.

Today, we honor one of the greatest Civil Rights Leaders in our Country, Dr. Rev, Martin Luther King. A day also known as a Day of Service.

I'll be honest. At first, I felt a little uncomfortable and confused. Instead of using this day (and everyday) to center the history and contributions of Black resilience and brilliance in making America what it is today. Why should I rush to busy myself to ‘rescue/save’ (serve) on this one day so I could feel better about ‘doing’ something. How does this honor Dr. King?

Alongside Walt Disney’s animated movies, television programming, and theme parks, scholars have examined The Walt Disney Studios’ True-Life Adventures series of live-action nature documentary films for their impact on popular culture. Historians, however, have mostly overlooked the significance of the True-Life Adventures for student learning about the natural world. Amending this historiographical shortcoming, this essay examines Disney’s innovative approach to wildlife filmmaking, describes viewers’ reactions to the True-Life Adventures’ educational qualities, and investigates the Studios’ efforts to use the films to enter the education market. This paper intends to explore the political landscape of the Union during the first two years of the Civil War, specifically how the people in the North perceived what remained of the Congress from 1860-1862. I will be using a combination of primary and secondary sources to cover the 37^th Congress of the United States, whose members were elected in 1860 and legislated until the next Congressional election in 1862. My research shows several significant stages in the political landscape during this period and uses these stages of partisan politics as the foundation for understanding how the federal government, …

In implementing the Rizal Law, the Department of Education’s K-12 Curriculum Guide emphasizes the study of characters in Rizal’s novels as a means to cultivate patriotism among the youth. In this light, this paper presents ethnographically how students from two public high schools in Rizal Province relate with characters in Noli me tángere. In the classroom, these characters have developed a status akin to “real” historical beings. Concomitantly, students use tropes that connect these characters to their own lives, relationships, and understandings of the social world. The students’ relationships elicit moral standards for imagining the nation and embodying their own …
