Alfond Fund Membership Levels And Benefits, Department Of Athletics

The Alfond Fund is the University of Maine’s athletic fundraising program which benefits the hundreds of scholar athletes who compete as UMaine Black Bears. All gifts that support the UMaine Black Bears help us grow the Alfond Fund. Donors can support the Alfond Fund through gifts to a specific team or for a specific need, such as scholarships. Donors can also make unrestricted gifts that UMaine Athletics will use where “the need is the greatest” to help scholar athletes achieve excellence in the classroom and in competition.

President Hunter charged Provost Hecker with convening a group to undertake a process of examining UMaine’s policies, processes and structures as they relate to commercializing research, with the goal of modernizing our approach and moving to an enhanced level of leadership in this area. BeeMapper is an interactive web tool that displays land cover and predicted wild bee abundance throughout the Maine wild blueberry production landscape. Information from BeeMapper can be used to:

1. 1. Determine placement of honey bee hives during blueberry pollination.
2. 2. Establish a pollinator conservation plan for particular crop fields.
3. 3. Understand wild bee communities in different types of land.

Center programs continued to be successful in a variety of key areas. The Commercial Forests Research Program, headed by Drs. Bob Wagner and Brian Roth, led several stakeholder-driven research projects for 35 member organizations through the Cooperative Forestry Research Unit (CFRU). A particularly important CFRU project development this past year was the initiation of the Maine's Adaptive Silviculture Experimental Network (MASEN), which will include several operational-scale installations across the state to evaluate alternative mid-rotation management strategies.

National Science Foundation (NSF) EPSCoR Advances Excellence in science and engineering research and education in Maine. Three NSF EPSCoR grants are currently underway in our state, and I’d like to take this opportunity to highlight each of the three programs.

Our current NSF EPSCoR RII Track 1 grant, the Sustainable Ecological Aquaculture Network (SEANET), consists of four research themes (Ecological and Sociological Carrying Capacity; Aquaculture in a Changing Ecosystem; Innovations in Aquaculture; and Human Dimensions) that are collaborating through a variety of projects to positively impact Maine’s working waterfront.
