In April 2020, a call for proposals for the UMaine Al Initiative seed grant funding program was released in an effort to help UMaine faculty increase their competitiveness for extramural funding support to advance UMaine's AI R&D agenda. A total of 16 applications were received by the June 1 application deadline and the quality of the proposals from the interdisciplinary teams assembled was outstanding.

NSF EPSCoR-Funded Research and Activities across the state have proven themselves to be resilient and impactful amidst challenges associated with the COVID-19 pandemic and its subsequent restrictions.

Since our last published update, Maine EPSCoR successfully completed the Year 5 No Cost Extension (NCE) report for the previous Track-1 award, the Sustainable Ecological Aquaculture Network (SEANET), thus closing out the research grant that has acted as a catalyst for cutting-edge sustainable aquaculture research in the state of Maine. During the NCE, SEANET supported 12 faculty participants, 23 graduate students, and 50 undergraduate students, created 27 publications, and saw $10,699,228 in awarded …

As the academic year 2019-2020 concludes, we find ourselves in a place for reflection as the Covid-19 pandemic has changed the way we function. We went from the lowest unemployment rate in many years to the highest unemployment rate in a matter of weeks. This year has been a lesson in agility and resilience. The Career Center staff successfully navigated the transition in delivering remote services in a matter of days, we did not have any down time during this transition period and continued to meet with students. Economic Contribution Of Colleges And Universities In Maine, Megan Bailey, Andrew Crawley, Todd Gabe

Maine has 38 colleges and universities that educate 72,605 students, employ a combined 14,621 nonstudent workers, and generate about $2.2 billion in annual revenue.

Colleges and universities in Maine generate a total annual economic contribution—including the spending of students and visitors, and multiplier effects—of an estimated $4.5 billion in output, 31,267 full- and part-time jobs, and $1.7 billion in labor income.

Maine’s colleges and universities support at least ten jobs in 125 Maine sectors, and there are statewide employment impacts of twenty jobs or more in 108 industries.

WaYS is a long-term program to engage Wabanaki students (grades 6-12) through their cultural heritage and environmental legacy to encourage and promote persistence in sciences through college and into a career. Innovative and unique, WaYS engages students in a year-long multi pronged program through a one-week summer Earth Camp, year-long internships/mentorships for high school students; and year-long Traditional Ecological Knowledge programs through Teen Centers or tribal Boys/Girls Clubs. Critical for success, it provides each student with mentoring from both cultural knowledge-keepers and natural resource professionals.
