The Interim Superintendent: A Case Study, Gary Bigham, Susan J. Nix Feb 2011

The Interim Superintendent: A Case Study, Gary Bigham, Susan J. Nix

Administrative Issues Journal

Considering the vitally important role that the superintendent plays in the overall functioning and wellbeing of any school district, the filling of that position should never be done in haste. Due to the importance of this process and the time it requires, school districts often employ an interim superintendent. In this single case study, one researcher engaged in qualitative research by actually assuming the role of an interim superintendent in a small West Texas school. The findings that emerged from this study consisted of identifying duties and roles of the interim superintendent in comparison with those of the regular superintendent. …

The District-Wide Sustainability Of A Professionallearning Community During Leadership Changesat The Superintendency Level, Chuey Abrego, Anita Pankake

Administrative Issues Journal

The purpose of this mixed methods follow-up single case study was two-fold: to determine if a school district was able to sustain a professional learning community (PLC) and to identify factors that enhanced, inhibited, or promoted the sustainability of a PLC from a district-wide perspective, with particular focus on how a change in leadership, i.e. a new superintendent, affected the sustainability of PLC attributes. In addition, the role of trust in influencing the sustainability of a professional learning community will be discussed in this paper.

Sticker Shock: Management Professors’Perspectives On The Rising Costs Of Collegetextbooks, Stan Williamson, Robert E. Stevens, Lawrence S. Silver, Kenneth E. Clow Feb 2011

Sticker Shock: Management Professors’Perspectives On The Rising Costs Of Collegetextbooks, Stan Williamson, Robert E. Stevens, Lawrence S. Silver, Kenneth E. Clow

Administrative Issues Journal

This study uses Internet survey methodology to target management instructors’ views on the cost of textbooks and the strategies that might be exercised by universities, publishers, and legislatures to control cost increases. From a random sample of 2,893 management professors selected, using university websites, from universities throughout the United States, 228 provided useable responses. Findings suggest that management instructors, particularly those with years of experience, acknowledge the concerns their students have over high textbook prices. They are willing to have legislation enacted to force changes in the marketing of the textbooks by publishers, but they do not want university policies …

In Favor Of Hospitality-Management Education, Michael J. Tews, Hubert B. Van Hoof Jan 2011

In Favor Of Hospitality-Management Education, Michael J. Tews, Hubert B. Van Hoof

Hospitality Review

Despite the almost one-hundred-year history of hospitality-management education; the hundreds of well-established two-year, four-year, and graduate programs worldwide; and the hundreds of thousands of graduates those programs have prepared for careers in the industry, hospitality-management education’s merit and place in higher education are still questioned at times, to the dismay of hospitality educators the world over. This article delineates several features of hospitality management that make these programs valuable and unique and provides compelling arguments in its favor. The arguments include: 1) courses tailored to the hospitality industry, the world’s largest industry; 2) focus on small-business management as well as …

Survivors, College, And The Law: Challenges In Rewriting Campus Sexual Misconduct Policy, Kristin Lang Jan 2011

Survivors, College, And The Law: Challenges In Rewriting Campus Sexual Misconduct Policy, Kristin Lang

The Vermont Connection

In September 2008, two top University of Iowa officials were fired as a result of the university’s mishandling of a 2007 sexual assault case. A review conducted by an external law firm found many significant flaws in the university’s response and its sexual assault policy. Colleges are rewriting their sexual assault policies to include more precise and/or legal definitions of terms such as sexual misconduct, sexual harassment, consent, and incapacitation. This article examines why it is necessary to have inclusive language in sexual misconduct policies and how campus officials are incorporating victim’s bill of rights, responsibilities, and confidential resources, in …

Progress To Reconciliation: A Journey With Lewis, Bono, And Spider-Man, David M. Johnstone Jan 2011

Progress To Reconciliation: A Journey With Lewis, Bono, And Spider-Man, David M. Johnstone

Growth: The Journal of the Association for Christians in Student Development

Reconciliation is a word full of profound inferences. It has implications steeped in the biblical landscape, yet it is also challenging to define. Using Miroslav Volf‘s guidance, twentieth century fiction, and film and pop music icons, this article seeks to glimpse a deeper biblical vision of grace and reconciliation. Volf observes that “[t]o triumph fully, evil needs two victories, not one.” Reconciliation sabotages and steals that victory from evil. Forgiveness and reconciliation do not negate justice; they provide the opportunity to go beyond justice and retribution. Simply put, reconciliation allows a terrible situation to be redeemed.

Sexuality Among Evangelical College Women, Rachel Keener Killam, Heather Davediuk Gingrich

Growth: The Journal of the Association for Christians in Student Development

While some studies have examined the attitudes and perceptions of women with regard to their sexuality, none have investigated evangelical, female college students. This study explored attitudes and perceptions among eight evangelical Christian college women attending an evangelical university in the Western United States. Qualitative interviews were conducted and transcripts analyzed to determine underlying themes. Themes that emerged were (a) shame, (b) (c) fear, (d) ambivalence, (e) ignorance, (f ) lack of sexual subjectivity and agency, (g) presence of sexual subjectivity and agency, (h) same-sex attraction, (i) female sexuality as God-given and natural, and (j) the importance of open dialogue …

Academic Advising Models In Faith-Based Colleges And Universities, Roger D. Wessel, Jenni L. Smith

Growth: The Journal of the Association for Christians in Student Development

This study examined how academic advising is conducted among private, faith-based colleges and universities. In addition to developing a profile of academic advising at these campuses, academic advising organizational models used by these institutions were examined. Academic advising responsibilities at these institutions incorporated prescriptive and developmental advising methods. Seventy percent of the institutions utilized the “Faculty-Only” advising model. Benefits of using faculty members as advisors include the emphasis that private colleges place on faculty-student contact, enabling students to have a deeper relationship with their professors. Negative implications when utilizing faculty advisors include that they have other job responsibilities and priorities …

Gender Differences In Student Engagement Among Emerging Adults Attending A Small Faith-Based University, Melvin P. Shuster Jan 2011

Gender Differences In Student Engagement Among Emerging Adults Attending A Small Faith-Based University, Melvin P. Shuster

Growth: The Journal of the Association for Christians in Student Development

The single best predictor of the success of university sponsored student development activities is the degree to which the students are engaged in these activities (Kuh, 2007). Sax (2008) observes though that much of our understanding of the impact of the college experience is based on the study of students in the aggregate, with relatively little work done on how the college environment differentially influences men and women. The present work investigated gender differences among Emerging Adults (ages 18- 29) (Arnett, 2000) in their engagement of university sponsored activities at a small faith based university located in Northern California. The …

Challenges Of Student Engagement In Community Colleges, Christine P. Nguyen Jan 2011

Challenges Of Student Engagement In Community Colleges, Christine P. Nguyen

The Vermont Connection

Student engagement is a major challenge faced by community college administrators. The impact of low student engagement on retention and graduation rates means community colleges across the nation have the opportunity to re-evaluate policies and practices that contribute to or hinder a student culture of engagement (Greene, Marti, & McClenney, 2008; McClenney, 2007). Community colleges are host to a diverse student population including commuter students, non-traditional students, and students with a wide range of academic goals and academic preparedness. The diversity of this population provides a challenging environment in which to foster student engagement. The function and value of student …

Moving Toward An Inclusive Model Of Allyship For Racial Justice, Viraj S. Patel Jan 2011

Moving Toward An Inclusive Model Of Allyship For Racial Justice, Viraj S. Patel

The Vermont Connection

This paper is prompted by a single question fueled by a lifetime of wonder. If I, an Asian American, work in the interests outside of my racial group to end a system of racial oppression from which I suffer and benefit from, is that considered allyship? Within the context of working towards racial justice, allyship refers specifically to White people working to end the system that oppresses people of color. By challenging a binary model of allyship, which I argue continues to perpetuate the binary status quo of dominance; I draw upon Paulo Freire’s work to begin a discussion for …

Dominant Scholarship: White Neocolonialism And Academic Integrity, Katelyn Sadler Jan 2011

Dominant Scholarship: White Neocolonialism And Academic Integrity, Katelyn Sadler

The Vermont Connection

Academic integrity policy sets scholarly guidelines for the style and quality of original work expected in academic pursuits. This policy derives from intellectual property laws, which aim to protect authors, but these guidelines and policies exclude and disadvantage certain students based on the preconceived notion that all authors come from a context where individual work is prized above the collective. Academic integrity is founded on dominant White ideas of rugged individualism. As a result, academic integrity policies with narrow definitions of plagiarism collude in assimilating students of color and international students into an educational environment that excludes their stories and …

Casual Conversations In Communicating The Value And Worth Of Historically Black Colleges And Universities, Lilu Barbosa Jan 2011

Casual Conversations In Communicating The Value And Worth Of Historically Black Colleges And Universities, Lilu Barbosa

The Vermont Connection

In my experience, knowledge and awareness of the worth of the United States (US) Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) seems to be transferred primarily through informal venues: conversations and interactions with friends and colleagues who have experienced them first-hand. In retrospect, it seems that prior to enrolling in higher education I was left in the dark about the academic institutions originally created to serve my particular demographic. Progressive thinkers, politicians and the academic elite espouse values such as diversity and equity. While the country has made large strides, students and professionals alike continue to fuel the misconception that education …

Lessons On Ethnic Data Disaggregation From The “Count Me In” Campaign, Jude Paul Matias Dizon Jan 2011

Lessons On Ethnic Data Disaggregation From The “Count Me In” Campaign, Jude Paul Matias Dizon

The Vermont Connection

This article supports the need to re-evaluate current models of racial/ethnic data collection in order to accurately assess and improve efforts of inclusion for Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) students. Through highlighting the efforts of students in the 2007 “Count Me In” campaign at the University of California, I argue that the campaign serves as an exemplar of AAPIs’ desire to disaggregate. Contrary to the often-referenced depiction of being a monolithic “model minority,” this article discusses the diverse experiences of the various AAPI sub-communities and the ways in which the larger label masks inequalities between AAPI sub-groups and across …
