Improving The Educational Experience Of Students With Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (Fasd), Sarah E. Bates
Improving The Educational Experience Of Students With Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (Fasd), Sarah E. Bates
The Dissertation in Practice at Western University
Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) is recognized as one of the leading causes of developmental disability in the Western world (Flannigan et al., 2018). Its prevalence is estimated at 4% of the population. This implies that approximately 4% of students have FASD, which in turn means that they may face elevated risks of encountering learning and behavioural challenges. These difficulties may manifest as developmental disabilities and speech-language deficits, often necessitating specialized educational interventions. (Flannigan et al., 2018; Chudley et al., 2005; Popova et al., 2016). As such, this Dissertation-in-Practice presents educators in the Silver Maple District School Board (a pseudonym) …

Encouraging A Sustainable Model For Professional Learning: Implementing District Wide Initiatives As An External Consultant In The United States, Vicente C. Bustamante
The Dissertation in Practice at Western University
Effectuating the adoption of research proven instructional practices across the classrooms of an entire school district is a dauting task. Traditionally, the incorporation of external consultants has been met with mixed responses particularly when it involves teacher professional learning and the sustainability of learned practices in the classroom. This Dissertation-in-Practice seeks to understand the complex relationship that exists when external consultants partner with school districts to assist in the adoption and implementation of instructional practices across an entire organization. Through the incorporation of instructional and transformational leadership lenses, the role of the external consultant is leveraged as a mechanism to …
Victim-Centred Policing: A Strategy For Effective Planning And Response To Mass Victimization Incidents, Karen D. Collins
Victim-Centred Policing: A Strategy For Effective Planning And Response To Mass Victimization Incidents, Karen D. Collins
The Dissertation in Practice at Western University
It is becoming increasingly important for police departments to develop internal capacity to address the needs of crime victims who are affected by serious incidents such as active shooters or terrorist attacks. Supporting the family and friends of victims, witnesses and others affected by a tragic incident is a key function of the investigating police agency. Victims seek information and require support from police investigators through all phases of the response. This dissertation-in-practice addresses the lack of refined victim-centred practices in planning for, and responding to mass victimization incidents at the X Police Department (a pseudonym). Adaptive and ethical leadership …

“Where I Feel Most Accepted”: Creating Queer-Affirming Fraternity Environments And Experiences, Patrick R. Githens
“Where I Feel Most Accepted”: Creating Queer-Affirming Fraternity Environments And Experiences, Patrick R. Githens
Journal of Sorority and Fraternity Life Research and Practice
This study focuses on what makes undergraduate fraternity chapters affirming for openly queer members. Although studies have been published on the demographics and experiences of non-heterosexual fraternity men, there needs to be more clarity regarding what makes chapter experiences welcoming and supportive for this population of members. Through qualitative grounded theory methodology with 10 study participants from Sigma Phi Epsilon (SigEp) Fraternity, this research found that diverse membership, leadership, and supportive interpersonal relationships contribute to an affirming chapter environment. The findings and recommendations share what fraternity undergraduate chapters can do to create and foster a queer-affirming environment.

What’S Next: Historically White Sorority Chapter Officers’ Response To 2020 Racial Events, Ericka Roland, Colette Grubman, Keri Decay
Journal of Sorority and Fraternity Life Research and Practice
The racial events of the summer of 2020 left many searching for answers regarding racial equity. This critical phenomenological qualitative study examines how chapter officers perceived the summer 2020 racial events that influenced their leadership regarding race and racism in their historically White sorority. The study findings revealed that the racial events catalyzed the chapter officers’ self-reflections, navigation of racial organization climate, and leading chapter reflection and education. These findings have important implications for practice and scholarship supporting chapter officers’ racial consciousness leadership development.
When Everyone Is Blamed, Are All Responsible? Defining The Legal Relationship Between North American Interfraternity Conference Fraternities/National Panhellenic Conference Sororities And Universities In Harassment Cases, Colleen E. Lofton
Journal of Sorority and Fraternity Life Research and Practice
A complex legal relationship exists between North American Interfraternity Conference fraternities/National Panhellenic Conference sororities and higher education institutions. This legal relationship has been defined for issues such as association rights and hazing, yet little research exists about this relationship in harassment cases. My review of scholarship and case law revealed that control and level of claim specificity are needed to define the relationship in instances of harassment. By understanding this legal relationship, both North American Interfraternity Conference fraternities/National Panhellenic Conference sororities and universities can continue to address harassment in higher education.

Considerations For Antiracist Practices In Sorority And Fraternity Life: A Critical Race Theory Perspective, Michael A. Goodman, Crystal E. Garcia, Stacey D. Garrett, Kaleb L. Briscoe
Journal of Sorority and Fraternity Life Research and Practice
This conceptual piece uses Critical Race Theory (CRT) as a way to recognize systemic inequities within sorority and fraternity life (SFL) communities, and to advance meaningful change on college campuses. We engage histories, literature, and current events to aid practitioners and scholars in deeper considerations around antiracist education in action. Further, we provide an accompanying case study to offer practical considerations for SFL practitioners, campus administrators, and scholars seeking to engage antiracist work within these communities.

The Interactive Journal of Global Leadership and Learning
The use of phenomenology via a narrative inquiry is increasingly becoming popular in qualitative research study as it provides an unparalleled approach in sharing lived experiences. This article employs a narrative inquiry study to improve the understanding as to why Black male students (also known as African American male students) graduate from college at a lower rate than their Latino, White, and Asian counterparts in the United States. These narratives helped describe the barriers that have frustrated African American male students from persisting in higher education. Participants identified the lack of financial support, lack of cultural competency, lack of identity, …

Building A More Resilient Physician Assistant Student: Suggestions For Implementing Mindfulness-Based Training Into Didactic Education, Sarah Cornell
Theses and Graduate Projects
Background: Burnout affects a high number of healthcare providers and compromises both provider and patient wellbeing. In addition to high turnover rates, burnout costs healthcare systems through errors, poor care outcomes, and decreased patient satisfaction. Mindfulness-based therapy delivered by phone apps has been successful in improving stress levels and burnout measures. Based on similar research with medical students, physician assistant students may benefit from early stress-reduction interventions, although the research surrounding implementation and long-term follow up is lacking.
Objective: This cross-sectional study looks at burnout rates across three cohorts at a single Master of Science in Physician Assistant Studies program …

The Dissertation in Practice at Western University
Abstract
This Dissertation-in-Practice addresses the Problem of Practice of a lack of intentional leadership development for academic administrators at College X (a pseudonym), a comprehensive community college in western Canada. Academic administrators typically come from the ranks of faculty. As Academic administrators, they serve particular functions and roles within the organization, functions and roles that are in many ways distinct from their previous work as faculty members. Academic administrators often lack the management and leadership knowledge or experience to prepare them for their roles and careers. The absence of adequate leadership development opportunities often contributes to low job satisfaction, burnout, …

Through The Lens Of Admissions Staff And Faculty Reviewers: How Implicit Bias Training May Mitigate Bias In The University Admissions Process: A Phenomenological Study, Sabrina L. Capps
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The purpose of this phenomenological study was to understand the lived experiences of university admissions staff and faculty reviewers who have attended an implicit bias, unconscious bias, or diversity training session while working at a higher education institution. The theories guiding this study were Ajzen’s theory of planned behavior (TPB) and Bandura’s theory of social learning. Both theories discussed how individuals may act in certain circumstances based on their social interactions, prior behaviors, and upbringing. What are the perspectives and lived experiences of admissions staff and faculty reviewers who have attended an implicit bias, unconscious bias, or diversity training at …
The Relationship Between High-Impact Educational Practices (Hips) And Institutional Integration And Persistence: A Predictive-Correlational Design, Amy L. O'Dell
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The purpose of this quantitative, predictive-correlational research study was to examine how well a linear combination of predictor variables, including course structure, is able to predict the levels of integration and rates of reenrollment among students at a regional, comprehensive university in the southwest. Higher education has a problem with attrition. Approximately 50% of undergraduates who begin their post-secondary education leave without completing a degree. Innovative classroom techniques, like high-impact practices (HIPs), may be a way to reduce student attrition. This study sought to investigate the affect that a unique HIP has on students’ levels of integration and rate of …

Theses and Graduate Projects
Background: Historically LGBTQ+ people have encountered discrimination in the world of medicine, and often providers are sometimes unaware of how to manage medical issues of these patients. In order to best serve queer and trans patients, a more coherent, consistent curriculum needs to be established so that all medical professions are capable of giving high quality treatment to these patients. Physician assistants (PAs) are advanced practice providers who take care of LGBTQ+ patients on a daily basis and are trained under a similar model as physicians. PA programs must also be up to date on the most culturally sensitive ways …

"Like Grasping At Wisps Of Smoke:" Interactional And Educational Challenges For College Students With Invisible Chronic Physical And Mental Conditions, Jennifer A. Butler, Daniel P. Modaff
Communication and Theater Association of Minnesota Journal
Past research has explored the experiences of college students with chronic conditions from a variety of methodologies; however, student-driven, longer-term qualitative data is needed to explore how students with chronic conditions describe the challenges they face in attempting to manage their conditions and succeed in college. The current study gathered qualitative data in the form of daily journal entries over a 14-day period (pre-pandemic) from 23 college students who self-identified as having a chronic physical or mental condition. The themes were discussed through the lens of communication theory of resilience. We envision the management of student chronic illness as resiliency …
