Investigating The Relationship Between Equity And Graduate Outcomes In Australia, Sarah Richardson, Dawn Bennett, Lynne Roberts
Investigating The Relationship Between Equity And Graduate Outcomes In Australia, Sarah Richardson, Dawn Bennett, Lynne Roberts
Higher education research
Australian higher education equity policy focusses mostly on access and participation with the implicit assumption that disadvantage will be ameliorated through educational achievement. Less is known as to whether patterns of disadvantage continue post-completion. In a context in which graduate employability is becoming an important yardstick against which to measure institutional effectiveness, this question is of fundamental importance to higher education equity practitioners and policymakers. This study employed Commonwealth graduate outcome data to investigate relationships between disadvantage and graduate outcomes in Australia, with disadvantage defined as a graduate belonging to one or more of the following groups – low SES, …

Blended Learning Research and Open Educational Resources
As our classrooms become more culturally and experientially diverse, what can we on our campuses do to ensure that all students have the opportunity to succeed? Many professional development opportunities aimed at helping faculty enhance their teaching practices often overlook the role of cultural competence in teaching and learning and fail to effectively integrate cultural sensitivity with high impact pedagogies. Factors such as race, ethnicity, and socioeconomic status can have a significant impact on a student’s educational experiences. There is a growing body of research that identifies such issues and describes tested strategies for helping both faculty and students overcome …

Information Booklet, Exhibition Catalog And Supplements - 'Ghetto': A Retail Art Installation, Brian Laduca, Adrienne Ausdenmoore
IACT Reports, Publications and Resources
A world-premiere installation retail experience that tackles the historically weighted word "ghetto" through a subverted commercial lens with the goal to take the commercialized aspects of use of the word and turn it into a socio/political/economic commentary.
Included in this collection are the information booklet supporting the creating of the installation; the exhibition catalog inspired by the annual Neiman Marcus Fantasy Christmas catalogs; and a copy of the installation takeaway for visitors of the installation.

Edad 890: Diversity And Equity In P-20 Educational Organizations—A Peer Review Of Teaching Project Benchmark Portfolio, Shavonna Holman
UNL Faculty Course Portfolios
As a brand new faculty member to the university system and to higher education, I was given the opportunity to develop and teach a brand new course entitled: Diversity and Equity in P-20 Educational Organizations. With this course only being taught a total of three times, each by me, I was unsure if I systematically explored what students were actually getting from the course in connection to the lessons being taught and the assigned activities.
In creating this portfolio, my goals were to improve my teaching in terms of creating a stronger relationship between the things I wanted my students …
Success After Failure: Academic Effects And Psychological Implications Of Early Universal Algebra Policies, Keith Howard, Martin Romero, Allison Scott, Derrick Saddler
Success After Failure: Academic Effects And Psychological Implications Of Early Universal Algebra Policies, Keith Howard, Martin Romero, Allison Scott, Derrick Saddler
Education Faculty Articles and Research
In this article, the authors use the High School Longitudinal Study 2009 (HSLS:09) national database to analyze the relationships between algebra failure, subsequent performance, motivation, and college readiness. Students who failed eighth-grade Algebra I did not differ significantly in mathematics proficiency from those who passed lower-level courses, but initially demonstrated significantly lower mathematics interest, mathematics utility, and mathematics identity. Both groups were less likely than the general population to meet college requirements in the eleventh grade, although students who passed a lower-level mathematics course fared better than those who failed Algebra I. Implications for policies addressing mathematics course enrollments are …

President's Message On Diversity, Equity, And Inclusion, Janet M. Riggs
President's Message On Diversity, Equity, And Inclusion, Janet M. Riggs
Reports from the President’s Office
Last spring I announced that we would take time this year to focus some of our thinking and conversation on the topic of diversity, equity, and inclusion. There are many reasons for us to direct our efforts to this topic: the changing demographics in our society and the need to provide a welcoming environment to a diverse student body, faculty and staff; our responsibility to prepare students for living in diverse communities and working in diverse workplaces; and our desire to prepare citizens who will be sensitive to social injustices and motivated to right them. In addition, we cannot dismiss …

The Awards Project: Promoting Good Practices In Award Selection, Betty Mayfield, Francis Su
All HMC Faculty Publications and Research
Every year the MAA honors many members of our community with a wide variety of prizes, awards, and certificates for excellence in teaching, writing, scholarship, and service (see maa.org/awards). The winners exemplify our ideals as an association; consequently, they are often viewed as role models and leaders. So it is important to ask: Do these awards, as a whole, reflect the outstanding contributions of the breadth of association membership?
Diversity, Equity, And Inclusion: Thinking Beyond Access, Janet M. Riggs
Diversity, Equity, And Inclusion: Thinking Beyond Access, Janet M. Riggs
Reports from the President’s Office
Last spring I announced at a faculty meeting that a major theme for our campus this year would be diversity and inclusion. I’d like to add equity to that framework as well. This year I hope that we can develop a shared understanding of these topics and some goals to which we can aspire as a community.
Five years ago Gettysburg College established a set of four strategic directions to guide our planning and decision-making: Engagement, Distinction, Access, and Connection. At that time we described Access as our aspiration to “increase the diversity of the student body and create a …
Mature Students - An Examination Of Dit’S Policy And Practice, Dáire Mag Cuill
Mature Students - An Examination Of Dit’S Policy And Practice, Dáire Mag Cuill
Articles
This paper examines the current position of mature students in the Technological University Dublin, the largest third-level institute in Ireland. It also deals with the treatment of mature applicants, and the position of mature students in the Republic of Ireland in general. The focus of the paper is on equity issues, and in all discussions of equity the underpinning principle is equality of opportunity. Where places on a third-level course are limited, for example, all applicants must be treated equally and the places allocated in a ‘fair’ manner. This does not mean that one cannot discriminate in the true sense …
