Moving From A Predominantly Teaching Oriented Culture To A Research Productivity Mission: The Case Of Mexico And The United States, Gus Gregorutti

Faculty Publications

This study qualitatively analyzes the culture conflicts professors in the United States and Mexico are experiencing with the increasing pressures to produce more research about higher education. The first dataset was collected from 36 faculty members from 12 small and medium sized private, doctorate-granting universities. These universities are located in 11 states across the United States. The remaining data came from 44 faculty members employed at four small and medium sized private, doctoral granting universities in four states across Mexico. Results showed that universities in the US are transitioning from a predominantly teaching college culture to a more research orientation. …

The Three Bands concert is an event that brings nearly 1000 people to campus to see performances by the University of Maine Concert Band alongside the bands of two local schools. This year the concert will take place at the Collins Center for the Arts on March 22, 2011, and we are requesting funding to bring in a guest conductor for this event. The Hudson Museum in collaboration with the Maine Indian Baksetmakers Alliance hosts one of the largest public events, which celebrates Maine Indian artforms and allows the University of Maine community and the general public to learn about Maine Indian history and culture. The Maine Indian Basketmakers Sale and Demonstration will be held in the Collins Center for the Arts on Saturday, December 11, 2010 from 9:00 to 3:00. This is the first time that funding to support the event has been requested from the Cultural Affairs.

We request a CA/DLS grant to help fund a visit by Professor Jonathan Gray (see bio below) April 7 - I0,2011, to address the contributions of communication studies to environmental issues. CA/DLS funds are particularly appropriate for the public performance event (#1 below), which has broad audience appeal on and off campus, and which contributes to the visibility of UM's new, interdisciplinary Sustainability Solutions Initiative for "quality of place" in Maine. The complementary events (#2,3,and4) will also attract a diverse audiences.

Spring 201 I Women's History Celebration, March 14 to March 31. This year's celebration will focus on getting young women involved with the issues that are at the forefront of their lives. The idea behind this year's WHC is to explore issues such as reproductive rights, domestic violence, body image, bullying, suicide, environmental toxins and other hot topics that women are confronted with everyday. As always, we will provide an array of speakers, panels, films, performances and displays that will reflect the diversity of women's experiences locally, nationally, and internationally.
