Umma Exhibition Of Jason Yarmosky, The University Of Maine Museum Of Art

Cultural Affairs Distinguished Lecture Series

The Museum of Art will feature a selection of hyper-realist oil on canvas paintings by NYC-based artist Jason Yarmosky. The exhibition, organized by UMMA, explores issues related to aging captured through large-scale, monochromatic portraits of the artist's grandparents. Yarmosky's most recent compositions deal specifically with his grandmother's diagnosis of dementia and Alzheimer's along with the physical and psychological transformation brought on by the disease. The powerful works featured at UMMA and the accompanying educational programs will inspire a vigorous dialogue related to elder and Alzheimer care. Through the voices of the featured artist, caregivers, citizens and the medical community, both …

The Lipstick Project, The University Of Maine Honors College

Cultural Affairs Distinguished Lecture Series

Leigh Boyle will share her story of The Lipstick Project, which grew out of her 2010 volunteer work in a women's hospital in Northern Ethiopia. The hospital cares for women with obstetric fistula, a condition resulting from prolonged, obstructed labor that leaves women chronically incontinent and ostracized. Leigh began giving weekly manicures to the isolated women, an act that proved life-giving for all. Upon returning home to Vancouver, Leigh saw similar need for restorative work in modern healthcare and established The Lipstick Project, a woman run volunteer organization that provides free, professional spa treatments to people in hospice and hospitals …

Social Justice: Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion

WGS 201 Wonder Woman: Sheroe, Amazon Princess, Feminist Icon In this course, we will delve into the politics and secret history of one of the most popular feminist icons and symbols of female power: Wonder Woman. A central theme of the course is the social construction of feminine power; the role of pop culture and the media in shaping this and how iconic representations of power translate off the page into the "real world." The rise and fall (and re-ascent) of Wonder Woman's cultural status becomes a fascinating lens to examine the Women's Rights/Lib Movements she was assigned to bridge. …

Protests Are Not Pretty Or Polite, Sam Tracy Feb 2017

Protests Are Not Pretty Or Polite, Sam Tracy

Social Justice: Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion

Protests are only supposed to be peaceful until your football team loses, then violence is free game. Protests are only allowed to be violent and chaotic until people of color have something to protest. Marginalized groups are given far less leeway for protests than their white neighbors. Only a minor part of institutionalized racism influences every aspect of black and brown life. In other words, it’s not just the criminal justice system and prisons, where the effects are most obvious, but in the media, education, economy and political system. It’s the invisible elephant in every room across the country.

Do Not Silence People; Debate And Engage Them, Jonathan Petrie Jan 2017

Do Not Silence People; Debate And Engage Them, Jonathan Petrie

Social Justice: Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion

During the protests of President Donald Trump’s inauguration, you may have seen Richard Spencer — notable alt-right, white nationalist leader — get punched in the face during an interview. In response, a lot of people shared the video praising the actions of the violent perpetrator, citing Spencer’s racist ideology as a means to justify violence. Here’s the issue. No matter how much you disagree with someone, you do not get to punch them. Violence does not solve this debate.
