An Intervention To Support Collegiate Student-Athletes In The Transition To Meaningful Lifetime Physical Activity, Melinda Smith, Diane L. Gill, Erin J. Reifsteck

HNES Educator Scholarship

Former student-athletes (SAs) experience unique barriers to maintaining their physical activity, such as loss of team support, less motivation without specific goals, and identity-related changes. Informed by a self-determination theory framework, the authors developed a 6-week Pilates-based intervention to support the physical and psychological wellness of SAs by fostering self-determined motivation and basic psychological needs satisfaction as they make the transition to physically active alumni. In this case study, the authors outline the development and implementation of the program with final-year SAs (N = 12) at a Division III institution. Faculty Educator Scholarship

While voting rights for adults with disabilities vary across states, the skill of voting is one important practice of citizenship, and thus active engagement in community. The skills required to inform voting require reading comprehension to reason with information, and self-determination to make choices based upon that information. This resource supports special educators of high school or postsecondary individuals with intellectual disabilities to articulate personal opinions on political issues, and to then compare political candidates using those issues.

Bridging General Education And The Business Discipline: Surfacing Central Themes Through A Core Course, Jennifer Dose

General education and business major courses often follow parallel paths with little intersection or appreciation of the other. Students benefit, however, by seeing key themes and skills linked to both general education and specialized disciplinary courses. Giving specific attention to Christian institutions, this paper argues for more intentional connections between these two parts of the curriculum, highlighting their common ideals of shared learning, shared connections as human beings, practical skills, institutional distinctiveness, and integration. -Recognize that student-athletes face unique challenges in transitioning to lifetime physical activity beyond college athletics.

-Collaborate with university athletics departments to facilitate transition programs for student athletes in their final year to provide an opportunity for open discussion and goal setting for the future.

Friends of Murray Library at Messiah College was formed in 1993 for the following purposes:

• To stimulate interest in the collections and facilities of Murray Library.

• To attract gifts of books, manuscripts, and other materials for the library's enrichment.
• To encourage and receive financial contributions for needs beyond the library budget, such as building special collections.

One might argue that this is not a wise time to raise queries of the common good for Christian higher education. Our in-boxes and newsfeeds provide persistent reminders of the crises facing higher education today, many of which uniquely impact Christian colleges and universities. A crisis of the humanities, as students turn away from areas of study traditionally associated with the liberal arts. A crisis of cost, as independent colleges wrestle with an unsustainable financial model and an increasingly skeptical constituency. Research on recreational media use among youth indicates young people of color who spend more time with media may also be at higher risk for school disengagement and low personal contentment compared to their white peers. This puts these students in a position to be even more influenced by the themes and messages that abound in pop culture, particularly music and social media. Initiation Of Standardized Depression Screening In College Health: A Quality Improvement Project, Kristen Slabaugh, Shannon Harris, Samuel Wilcock

Nursing (Graduate) Educator Scholarship

Background: Depression is a leading health concern in college health. An on-campus health clinic was identified as conducting complaint-based screening. U.S. Preventative Services Task Force recommends standardized screening in all primary care settings.

Objective: To implement a quality improvement project for standardized screening and referral of depressive symptoms and identify factors related to mentoring program interest in a college health clinic.

Methods: Demographic survey and Patient Health Questionnaire-2 were distributed to students who met inclusion criteria. Positive screens received further intervention with Patient Health Questionnaire-9 and immediate evaluation, encouragement of follow-up, or educational handout.

Colleges and Universities around the U.S. have quietly invested in campus agricultural projects (CAPs) as interdisciplinary space for sustainability and food system education. In 2009, the College Sustainability Report Card showed that 29 percent of college campuses had some sort of campus farm or garden (Sustainable Endowments Institute, 2009).
