Using Community Service Projects To Teach Leadership And Team-Building: Theoretical Foundations, Students' Reactions And Practical Considerations, Gilbert Tan

This paper discusses the theoretical foundations of utilizing Community Service Project (CSP) or service-learning to teach Leadership and Team-Building. It examines the students’ reactions to this innovative method of instruction. This is done through conducting a content analysis of students’ learning journals, in which students reflect on their CSP learning experiences. Two themes emerged from the data: (a) variety of learning experiences, and (b) impact of CSP experience. The data suggested that students derived a variety of learning experiences from the CSP. This study was conducted to determine the extent to which student’s reflective writings during the educational leadership internship indicated if students were able to understand and relate the ELCC standards to their schools practices. A second purpose was to use these reflective journals to evaluate how well the program prepared the students for their role as future school leaders by examining how well their experiences aligned with the ELCC standards.

Faculty working in research-intensive university environments find a variety of challenges to their time, energies, and resources, including finding balance between the traditional areas of teaching, research, and service. In most research universities, the research focus becomes all encompassing, and institutional service commitments are called into question. The current study of over 500 faculty in research university environments demonstrates the need for shared governance to be clear and purposeful in its work and intentions in order to muster faculty support.

Technological, demographic, and competitive changes in distance education (DE) pose complex leadership and strategic issues for community colleges. Leaders must establish institutional and academic objectives, develop financial and technological strategies, and organize, market, and evaluate DE initiatives. Their objectives and strategies should anticipate and help shape the developing competitive environment in which their colleges operate. This qualitative case study examined DE administrative and staff leadership roles, organization structures, and strategies at three Midwestern community colleges with expanding DE programs.
