Stratospheric ballooning is a tool of enormous promise to help STEM college faculty foster highly engaged learning of science for a wide range of students at a wide range of institutions. High altitude ballooning offers a platform for investigating science and engineering across many fields. Ballooning has been used in courses and experiences for not just undergraduate science majors, but also all undergraduates—including future teachers who, in turn, are the key to improving K-12 science education. Undergraduates are often left out of conversations surrounding open access. While they may not share the same concerns about publishing and prestige as faculty and graduate students, they do consume vast amounts of information, and thus can benefit just as much as those farther in their academic careers by knowing how to find, evaluate, and use open access resources. What if libraries across Oregon shared a repository of how-to instructional videos and tutorials? What if patron questions like, “How do I download an eBook?” could be answered by a slick two-minute video that any library using the same eBook platform could embed at the point-of-need? With an eye towards design thinking, performance support, instructional design, creative collaboration, and technology wrangling, these are the questions that we’ll address in this active discussion. Together, we’ll envision what instructional content could best be shared among Oregon libraries and how point-of-need resources could support library patrons at all different types of libraries.

When students role-play, their learning is personalized (Joyce & Calhoun, 2014). Add the challenge of finding compatible partners, and students are fully engaged as they infer the connections between themselves and their “dates”. Mix in the final element of limiting the opportunity to interact with potentially compatible partners, and students must quickly determine importance, synthesize, and then verbalize the details of their personas. Additionally, students must analyze their partner’s message to identify connections to their own, infer hidden identities, and describe their cognitive processes. This session focuses on digital collections at the University of Dayton Libraries and how it has evolved from using a stand-alone digital asset management system (CONTENTdm) to a flexible, robust, open-access institutional repository solution hosted by Berkley Electronic Press (Bepress). We share our trials and errors from our first digitization initiatives that began in 2006, to the launch of our first digital collection using CONTENTdm in 2010, to the implementation of our IR, eCommons, in 2013.
