A Comparison And Contrast Of The Idealized Role Of The Secondary School Principal As Perceived By Superintendents, Principals, And Teachers, Owen J. Kosik

The differences and similarities concerning the role of the secondary school principal as perceived by superintendents, principals, and teachers was studied. All superintendents and principals and twenty-five randomly selected teachers at the five traditional high schools in the Tri-Cities provided the input from which the data was drawn and conclusions were reached. A survey questionnaire containing forty statements frequently suggested for the secondary school principal was the tool utilized for this procedure. A common philosophy of administrators and music educators should be prerequisite for a successful music program. This philosophy should permit enough flexibility to allow for individual differences and yet be rigid enough to encompass general education needs and goals. It can only be shared through communication. The place of music within the curriculum will be understood through this communication between the music educator and the chief administrator. It shall be the purpose of this study to encourage the shared philosophy and communication relationship between school music educators and their administrators.

This study proposes to see what percent of the principals surveyed, by means of a questionnaire, agree or disagree that they fulfilled the stated roles for developing curriculum for use in a "cooperative" team teaching approach to instruction in their schools. This study also proposes to test the following null hypothesis: There is no significant difference between the responses made on each role by principals in an urban or suburban school setting.

Since principals are not immune from tort suits, the purposes of this study were (1) to suggest measures to minimize exposure of principals to tort suits, and (2) to suggest measures of protection against such suits.
