Reducing Food Scarcity: The Benefits Of Urban Farming, S.A. Claudell, Emilio Mejia Dec 2023

Reducing Food Scarcity: The Benefits Of Urban Farming, S.A. Claudell, Emilio Mejia

Journal of Nonprofit Innovation

Urban farming can enhance the lives of communities and help reduce food scarcity. This paper presents a conceptual prototype of an efficient urban farming community that can be scaled for a single apartment building or an entire community across all global geoeconomics regions, including densely populated cities and rural, developing towns and communities. When deployed in coordination with smart crop choices, local farm support, and efficient transportation then the result isn’t just sustainability, but also increasing fresh produce accessibility, optimizing nutritional value, eliminating the use of ‘forever chemicals’, reducing transportation costs, and fostering global environmental benefits.

Designing Blended Experiences: Laugh Traders Design Fiction, Brian J. Okeefe Jul 2021

Designing Blended Experiences: Laugh Traders Design Fiction, Brian J. Okeefe

Frameless

The increasing ubiquity of interactions that involve complementary digital content, physical objects, and spaces, brings about new challenges for designers. There is a need to embed designs in legacy systems, whether those are existing physical structures or existing digital platforms. Traditional approaches to product design, interaction design, and user experience design often do not take this new context into account. Many systems do not consider how designers produce new digital and physical experiences that work harmoniously, while supporting new interactions and relationships with people (Imaz and Benyon 2007; Jetter, Geyer, Schwarz & Reiterer 2012). To address this, we propose the …

Real Work With Real Consequences: Enlisting Community Energy Engineering As An Approach To Envisioning Engineering In Context, Michelle E. Jordan, Steve Zuiker, Wendy Wakefield, Mia Delarosa Jun 2021

Real Work With Real Consequences: Enlisting Community Energy Engineering As An Approach To Envisioning Engineering In Context, Michelle E. Jordan, Steve Zuiker, Wendy Wakefield, Mia Delarosa

Journal of Pre-College Engineering Education Research (J-PEER)

This study describes an illustrative case study from a year-round program that positions middle and high school youth to explore the social value of energy systems in their homes, schools, and neighborhoods. Designed to center existing youth assets, interests and values, Community Energy Engineering (CEE) frames engineering as a tool that students can enlist in order to understand and interrogate their local socio-energy system while also acting to transform it. CEE partners with Title 1 schools in Latino/a neighborhoods in the U.S. southwest. CEE situates youth community-based solar energy innovation projects as consequential, evolving in and with historically contingent engineering …

Adventuring Into Complexity By Exploring Data: From Complicity To Sustainability, Tim Lutz Mar 2021

Adventuring Into Complexity By Exploring Data: From Complicity To Sustainability, Tim Lutz

Northeast Journal of Complex Systems (NEJCS)

Problems of sustainability are typically represented by major present-day challenges such as climate change, biodiversity loss, and environmental and social injustice. Framed this way, sustainable lives and societies depend on finding solutions to each problem. From another perspective, there is only one problem behind them all, stated by Gregory Bateson as: “…the difference between how nature works and the way people think,” and complexity provides a way to define and approach this problem. I extend Edgar Morin’s conceptions of restricted and general complexity into pedagogy to address problems of simplicity and reductionist teaching. The proposed pedagogy is based on long …

Development Of A New Technology For Obtaining The Substance Of The Drug Acetamizole, Sarvar Saidov, Asqar Abdurazakov, Rixsibay Karimov, Mavluda Baltabayeva

Chemical Technology, Control and Management

The main goal of this work is to obtain a preparation of acetamizole based on local raw materials by a more convenient method of acylation of 2-methoxycarbonylaminobenzimidazole with glacial acetic acid, this synthesis method is proposed for the first time. On the basis of the conducted experiments, favorable conditions for the reaction were found, the influence of the nature of the acid, the temperature, the duration of the reaction and other factors on the course of the reaction was studied, the technology was developed and implemented at the experimental production of "IHRV AN RUz". Based on experiments conducted by scientists …

Estimating The Bubbling Process Of Ozone-Containing Gases In The Water, M.P. Parpiev, А.А. Simonov, Aleksey Kamardin, Abdulaziz M. Nazarov Mar 2021

Estimating The Bubbling Process Of Ozone-Containing Gases In The Water, M.P. Parpiev, А.А. Simonov, Aleksey Kamardin, Abdulaziz M. Nazarov

Chemical Technology, Control and Management

Theoretical estimates were made and significant factors of dissolution of ozone-containing gases in water during bubbling in tanks were determined. The expediency of using microbubbles for more efficient saturation of water and aqueous solutions with ozone and generation of ozone with maximum concentration is shown. It is shown that when bubbling gas in water, including ozone-containing gas, the most important indicator is the volume gas content, which determines the ratio of the volume of the gas phase to the volume of the gas-liquid mixture in the contact apparatus. In the presence of a set of bubbles in the water, the …

The University has an important role in society in three main axes; education, scientific research and community services where the progress of nations is measured with its strength, the degree of preparation, and kept abreast of the requirements of the times. Because of the fact that the university is made up - at the end - of study plans and programs and also in order to overcome to compete with graduates locally, regionally and internationally, the most important functions of the university asa whole and departments in particular are the preparation of strong plans and study programs for all disciplines …

A Patterning Approach To Complexity Thinking And Understanding For Students: A Case Study, Shae L. Brown Sep 2019

A Patterning Approach To Complexity Thinking And Understanding For Students: A Case Study, Shae L. Brown

Northeast Journal of Complex Systems (NEJCS)

Complexity thinking and understanding are vital skills for young people in these times of uncertainty and change. Such skills contribute to resilience and capacities for adaptivity and innovation. Within my teaching practice I have found students to be aware of complex dynamics, uncertainty and change, both in their lives and in the world. However, the current curriculum lacks language and process to conceptualise, articulate and develop complexity understanding. To address this problem, I developed and introduced a patterns-based design and process to a cohort of Australian secondary students. Comprising flowform patterning together with ecological metaphors, the design forms a conceptual …
