Leadership Education And Moocs: A Content Analysis Approach To Understanding The Pedagogy And Characteristics Of Leadership Massive Open Online Courses (Moocs), J. E. Jason Headrick
Leadership Education And Moocs: A Content Analysis Approach To Understanding The Pedagogy And Characteristics Of Leadership Massive Open Online Courses (Moocs), J. E. Jason Headrick
Department of Agricultural Leadership, Education and Communication: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Scholarship
The purpose of this study is to identify the pedagogical strategies used for instruction and assessment in leadership-oriented MOOCs and gain a more refined understanding of the current state of MOOCs in leadership education. The study also seeks to fill the gaps in the body of knowledge surrounding leadership MOOCs. Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) are a form of distance education course used across content areas. They have been celebrated as revolutionizing the way learners access education and the way colleges and universities could expand the notion of education on a global scale beyond their traditional campuses. The use of …
Reframing Writing Instruction In Physical Learning Environments: Making Connections Between Digital And Nondigital Technologies, André C. Buchenot, Tiffany Roman
Reframing Writing Instruction In Physical Learning Environments: Making Connections Between Digital And Nondigital Technologies, André C. Buchenot, Tiffany Roman
Faculty and Research Publications
Physical learning environments offer many affordances that one can choose from when designing instruction. For courses where student writing is central to course learning outcomes, a challenge exists in that innovative digital technologies may take precedence over nondigital tools, such as paper-based student writing. We argue that treating student writing as a technology can increase opportunities for active learning within physical learning environments. In this article, we describe an approach to writing instruction that builds intentional connections between paper-based texts and digital technologies to increase opportunities for active learning. We explain the rationale for the design decisions in an introductory …
Virtual Reality As A Pedagogical Tool To Design For Social Impact: A Design Case, Tiffany Roman, Jon Racek
Virtual Reality As A Pedagogical Tool To Design For Social Impact: A Design Case, Tiffany Roman, Jon Racek
Faculty and Research Publications
Three-dimensional (3-D) virtual environments have key affordances that can improve learning, particularly when context, culture, and pedagogical aims are aligned to a given learning situation. One challenge in detailing effective uses of 3-D virtual environments in teaching and learning contexts is that the design judgments involved are not always made explicit. We argue that the transparency of design judgments, as it relates to the use of 3-D virtual environments, are critically important. This article advances scholarship of emerging technologies by detailing the design judgments of a university instructor within a Design for Social Impact cross-disciplinary course. To address learner needs …
Metaliteracy As Pedagogical Framework For Learner-Centered Design In Three Mooc Platforms: Connectivist, Coursera And Canvas, Kelsey L. O'Brien, Michele Forte, Thomas P. Mackey, Trudi E. Jacobson
Metaliteracy As Pedagogical Framework For Learner-Centered Design In Three Mooc Platforms: Connectivist, Coursera And Canvas, Kelsey L. O'Brien, Michele Forte, Thomas P. Mackey, Trudi E. Jacobson
University Libraries Faculty Scholarship
This article examines metaliteracy as a pedagogical model that leverages the assets of MOOC platforms to enhance self-regulated and self-empowered learning. Between 2013 and 2015, a collaborative teaching team within the State University of New York (SUNY) developed three MOOCs on three different platforms—connectivist, Coursera and Canvas—to engage with learners about metaliteracy. As a reframing of information literacy, metaliteracy envisions the learner as an active and metacognitive producer of digital information in online communities and social media environments (Mackey & Jacobson, 2011; 2014). This team of educators, which constitutes the core of the Metaliteracy Learning Collaborative, used metaliteracy as a …
E-Learning Tools For Andragogy: A Scale Model Of Technology-Based Active Learning, Ying Wang, Kai S. Koong, Jun Sun
E-Learning Tools For Andragogy: A Scale Model Of Technology-Based Active Learning, Ying Wang, Kai S. Koong, Jun Sun
Information Systems Faculty Publications and Presentations
Andragogy is an educational philosophy on how to facilitate active learning for adult students. It requires instructors to engage students in various learning activities, including problem solving, essay writing, discussions, group projects, and so on. The challenge is how to facilitate student participation and assess learning outcomes. The emergence of e-learning tools, such as Discussion Board, Wiki, Blogs, and Wimba provide technical support for the new learning approach. Based on the review of information systems and education literature, this study develops a taxonomy of e-learning tools. In particular, it proposes a scale model based on the premise that e-learning tools …
Mathematics In The Age Of Technology: There Is A Place For Technology In The Mathematics Classroom, Helen Crompton
Mathematics In The Age Of Technology: There Is A Place For Technology In The Mathematics Classroom, Helen Crompton
Teaching & Learning Faculty Publications
In today’s world of ubiquitous computing there are a number of technologies available to K-12 educators for teaching and learning mathematics. However, Koehler and Mishra (2008) have described how teaching and learning with such technologies presents a “wicked problem,” as it can involve a number of variables, independent of each other and contextually bound, that need to be brought together. This article highlights the advantages technology offers for mathematics education and looks at some of the reasons behind the poor uptake, such as teacher beliefs and lack of training. A number of solutions are offered to address these issues, including …

Assessing Technology Skills In An Undergraduate Business Course, Kimberly Hollister, Nicole B. Koppel
Department of Information Management and Business Analytics Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
This article focuses on how an undergraduate program of an Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB), an accredited business school, incorporates assessment on the use of information technology in a computer business course. To meet the new AACSB standards regarding assessment and adequately determine "if and what students are learning?" This article presents the technology learning goals, the associated learning objectives and the specific technology-related behaviors and actions that are assessed. In addition, specific examples of student assignments are presented as well as how these assignments are designed and assessed in relation to the learning objectives for the …
