Personalizing Student Graduation Paths Using Expressed Student Interests, Nicolas Charles Dobbins
Personalizing Student Graduation Paths Using Expressed Student Interests, Nicolas Charles Dobbins
Masters Theses
"This work proposes an intelligent recommender approach to facilitate personalized education and help students in planning their path to graduation. The original research contribution of this work is to develop a recommender approach that pervasively personalizes and optimizes a student’s path to graduation by accounting for the student’s career interests and academic background. The approach is a multi-objective optimization problem, subject to institutional constraints, with the goal of optimizing the graduation path with respect to one or more criteria, such as time-to-graduation, credit hours taken, and alignment with student’s career interests. The efficacy of the approach is illustrated and verified …
Instructor Selection And Use Of Virtual Field Experiences In College Geoscience Course, Kristen Foley
Instructor Selection And Use Of Virtual Field Experiences In College Geoscience Course, Kristen Foley
Masters Theses
Virtual Field Experiences (VFEs) are a growing supplement and gateway to traditional fieldwork in the geosciences. With VFEs becoming more accepted for use in college geoscience courses, how instructors find and choose VFEs for their students is critical to creating greater accessibility and future resources. VFEs that are not easily accessed by instructors may go unused, and the effort put into making them would have been wasted. This phenomenological descriptive study utilized five focus groups of college geoscience instructors in the United States. Each 1-to-1.5-hour focus group session of 3-7 participants took place on video conferencing software, which was recorded …

Physical To Virtual: A Model For Future Virtual Classroom Environments, Stephen J. Fink
Masters Theses
Virtual reality is a technology that has seen unprecedented growth since the turn of the century with increasing applications within business, entertainment, and educational applications. As virtual reality technologies continue to develops and markets expand, the world may see an increased demand for virtual classrooms: virtual environments (VEs) that students may access through immersive virtual reality technologies to receive guided instruction, conduct simulations, or perform tasks typical in a classroom setting. While many studies document how virtual reality is beneficial to educational processes, there is little discussion on how virtual environments should be architecturally designed. Thus one may hypothesize that …
A Meta-Analysis: Gamification In Education, Yalin Wang
A Meta-Analysis: Gamification In Education, Yalin Wang
Masters Theses
“Gamification has been used in a variety of contexts including education. In order to understand the effects of gamification in education, a meta-analysis was conducted. A bottom-up approach was used to analyze the effects of game design elements on learning outcomes found in the literature search. The result suggests that gamification can enhance student learning outcomes. Elements such as points, leaderboards, competitions, progress bars, feedback, and collaboration have medium to large effect sizes. Gamification also has larger effects on young children in elementary education than learners at other education levels. The study offers suggestions and guidelines for educators on the …

Games For Organizational Training: Gamer Motivation Profile And Organizational Training Climate Effect Of Trainee Preference For Gamified Training, Brooke-Nicole Woods Ruffin
Masters Theses
“Gamified training is often utilized in organizations as a way to revamp their training and gain the attention of their employees. However, this training is expensive, and research is needed to help ensure that this training delivery is successful. In this study, first an individual’s gamer motivation profile is compared with learning outcomes that share the same elements. This was completed to determine if the elements that they looked for in playing video games were in alignment with those same elements in training In addition, it was explored whether the preference for participating in video games based on an individual’s …

Business-Sponsored Films For Physical Science, Bertha Elizabeth Slye
Business-Sponsored Films For Physical Science, Bertha Elizabeth Slye
Masters Theses
For many years business-sponsored films have been used widely in instruction in the science classroom. Because of the potential of the films in helping teachers bridge the gap between the fundamental teaching of scientific principles, and the applications found in the actual experiences of the student's consumer world, requests for them have often exceeded the output of those that are educationally sound. In the last decade in particular, the development of atomic and space technology, as well as the growing interest in science, have made it necessary to teach science beyond the confines of information in the ordinary science textbook. …
How Television Is Affecting The Lives Of Sixth Graders In Kalamazoo – A Report From The Children, Charles R. Calhoun
How Television Is Affecting The Lives Of Sixth Graders In Kalamazoo – A Report From The Children, Charles R. Calhoun
Masters Theses
The Problem and Its Background
Audio-Visual Aids
The attention of children is attracted greatly to most of the objects and events they see and hear. Hence they become aware of their environments and learn chiefly through the experiences that come to them through the visual and auditory receptors. As a result educational programs are designed to take advantages of these facts. Audio-visual aids have therefore brought reality into the classroom by making maximal use of the audio-visual senses.
The extensive use of audio-visual aids in classroom teaching is in part evident in the number of motion-picture projectors in the high …
