Race, Poverty And Sat Scores: Modeling The Influences Of Family Income On Black And White High School Students’ Sat Performance, Ezekiel J. Dixon-Román, Howard T. Everson, John J. Mcardle

Ezekiel J Dixon-Román

Background:

Educational policy makers and test critics often assert that standardized test scores are strongly influenced by factors beyond individual differences in academic achievement such as family income and wealth. Unfortunately, few empirical studies consider the simultaneous and related influences of family income, parental education, and high school achievement on college admissions test scores.

Focus of Study:

This research was animated by the nagging question of the association of family income with SAT performance. For example, is the relationship between family income and SAT performance non-linear? Does the relationship differ markedly by race? More importantly, how strong are the effects …

Addressing Plagiarism In A Digital Age, Eleanor Kutz, Wayne Rhodes, Stephen Sutherland, Vivian Zamel Aug 2012

Addressing Plagiarism In A Digital Age, Eleanor Kutz, Wayne Rhodes, Stephen Sutherland, Vivian Zamel

Eleanor Kutz

Four faculty members from UMass Boston's English Department explore possible ways of addressing the issue of plagiarism with their students as easy access to materials on the Internet is making it easier then ever to draw on others’ words, with or without appropriate documentation. Approaching faculty concerns from four complementary perspectives, the authors make the case for 1) recasting our understanding of plagiarism in terms of influence, borrowing, and remixing of the sort that is central to musical and artistic creation, 2) examining how students might develop greater awareness of the ways in which they are working with sources in …

Just days after the mass shooting, the Governor of Virginia, Timothy M. Kaine convened a review panel that was comprised of nine “nationally recognized individuals” across the disciplines of “law enforcement, security, governmental management, …

Understanding Engagement In Science Education: The Psychological And The Social, Stacy Olitsky, Catherine Milne Jan 2012

Understanding Engagement In Science Education: The Psychological And The Social, Stacy Olitsky, Catherine Milne

Stacy Olitsky

Traditionally, engagement as a feature of student action has been the purview of psychologists seeking to identify the individual variables that come together to constitute student engagement. Recognition of the complexity of the concept has led to multidimensional models that include behavioral, emotional, and cognitive engagement. Data for these studies typically are culled from surveys of individual students. However, such approaches have two limitations – there is no place for examining collective engagement and the role of classroom interactions for engendering engagement is not sufficiently emphasized. In this chapter, we explore sociological approaches that can offer the possibility for developing …

Thinking Like Thinkers: Is The Art And Discipline Of An "Attitude Of Suspended Conclusion" Lost On Lawyers?, Donald J. Kochan

Donald J. Kochan

In his 1910 book, How We Think, John Dewey proclaimed that “the most important factor in the training of good mental habits consists in acquainting the attitude of suspended conclusion. . .” This Article explores that insight and describes its meaning and significance in the enterprise of thinking generally and its importance in law school education specifically. It posits that the law would be best served if lawyers think like thinkers and adopt an attitude of suspended conclusion in their problem solving affairs. Only when conclusion is suspended is there space for the exploration of the subject at hand. The …

Coherence, Contradiction And The Development Of School Science Identities, Stacy Olitsky, Linda Loman, Jessica Gardner, Markita Billups

Stacy Olitsky

This ethnographic study took place in a diverse eighth grade science classroom in an urban magnet school where students demonstrate significant variation in classroom achievement and participation. In this paper, we use an activity-theoretical framework to examine classroom events in order to identify and work toward reducing contradictions that can interfere with students developing positive school science identities. We discuss several contradictions for students in this classroom, including the conflicts between social and academic goals and the inconsistencies between science and math classes. We found that in situations where students could build and use social capital through learning science, they …

Cameron C. Beatty, Ph.D.

The social climate of student organizations can alter a student’s perception of their influence upon the organization. This study examines Black student leaders’ perceptions of social climate of campus governing boards at a predominantly White institution (PWI). Black students’ experiences were investigated using Moos’s (1979, 1987) social climate dimensions. Implications and recommendations for student affairs professionals advising Black student leaders are detailed based on three salient themes: mission and direction, relationships, and mutual impact.

‘Miss, Are You Bisexual?’ The (Re)Production Of Heteronormativity Within Schools And The Negotiation Of Lesbian, Gay And Bisexual Teachers’ Private And Professional Worlds, Emily M. Gray Dr

Dr Emily M Gray

This research offers an analysis of the experiences of twenty people who identify as lesbian, gay or bisexual (LGB) and who are teachers within their professional lives. It aims to illustrate the ways in which the continuing (re)production of heteronormative discursive practices impacts upon their lives both within the private and the professional realm. The research deploys a two-tier methodological framework in order to gain insights into the lives of LGBT teachers, an often invisible social group. The research is underpinned by a theoretical framework which draws upon poststructuralist feminist/queer theories but which also is data, rather than theory, driven. …

Mexican Higher Education At A Crossroads: Topics For A New Agenda In Public Policies, Jesús F. Galaz-Fontes, Manuel Gil-Antón, Laura E. Padilla-González, Juan J. Sevilla-García, Jorge G. Martínez-Stack, José L. Arcos-Vega

Jesús Francisco Galaz Fontes

After a period of unregulated growth from the 1960s to the late 1980s, public Mexican higher education came to be perceived as a "disaster zone" by the federal government. Starting at that point, several public policies seeking to improve its quality, social pertinence, efficiency and equity have implemented. While impacting positively Mexican higher education in many respects, such policies have had unintended negative effects and, it is contended, they are currently having diminishing gains. This paper identifies six topics that the next generation of public policies should consider if public Mexican higher education is to evolve into a stage in …

Rethinking Critical Literacy In The New Information Age, Panayota Gounari Dec 2008

Rethinking Critical Literacy In The New Information Age, Panayota Gounari

Panayota Gounari

This article looks at new information and communication technologies (ICTs) as sites of public pedagogy in that they produce particular forms of knowledge and literacies and reproduce representations that are always mediated through specific social relations. Public pedagogy as a process that constitutes a broader category beyond classroom practices, official curricula, and educational canons, extends to all sectors of human life, including virtual spaces. No longer restricted to traditional sites of learning such as educational or religious sites, public pedagogy produces new forms of knowledge and apprenticeship and new narratives for agency and for naming the world. Virtual spaces as …
