The Effectiveness Of Training For Empathy In Pre-Service Teacher Education, John Bruce Jessen
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The specific objective of this research was to determine the effectiveness of training on understanding empathy in the teacher training process.
Subjects were Utah State University students enrolled in Elementary Education during winter quarter 1976. The experimental group was composed of 34 subjects and the control group of 27 subjects.
Both groups were administered a pretest. The experimental group then received the treatment which consisted of a training program designed to help them to be able to (1) define, (2) recognize instances of, and (3) to emit empathic behavior. At the conclusion of the training program both the experimental and …

The results showed that fifty-six percent graduated the year they attended the program; twelve percent returned to regular school. Persisted and graduated; six percent went on to college and twenty-six percent received their graduation certificate or an equivalency (G.E.D.) …
Personality Testing By The Schools: A Possible Invasion Of Privacy, Angelika Hoyman
Personality Testing By The Schools: A Possible Invasion Of Privacy, Angelika Hoyman
IUSTITIA
Contemporary critics, concerned with the maintenance of personal privacy, have termed the use of personality tests a "white glove rack and screw" . Monroe H. Freedman, Dean of Hofstra University School of Law, while testifying before a congressional subcommittee, compared the use of psychological tests to the administration of truth serums and found both to be an affront to personal dignity.
Nevertheless, the 1960's witnessed a three-fold increase in the number of school counselors employed in most schools and a nation-wide survey of these counselors indicated that at least one-third of their time was spent in dealing with the personal …

The Effects Of Teacher Reinforcement On Student Attitudes And Achievement, Ray Douglas Mccollum
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
This study examined the effects of teacher reinforcement on both reading achievement and students' attitudes toward school. It was hypothesized that students of high reinforcing teachers would achieve greater reading gains and would exhibit more positive attitudes toward school than students of lower reinforcing teachers.

Long-Term Effects Of Home-Based Preschool Enrichment, Mark Vincent Cunningham
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
This study was designed to measure the effect of the Home Start Project upon school achievement as measured by the third grade scores on the Iowa Test of Basic Skills. The non-randomized posttest-only control group design was utilized in this research project. Subject selection consisted of those forty-four subjects for whom prior comparisons had been drawn concerning Horne Start subjects. However, it was possible to locate only 31 Home Start subjects (22 black and 9 white) and 31 of their older and Non-Home Start siblings (22 black and 9 white). The ITBS September scores of Home Start children were compared …

The Elements Of Mathematics Program: How Can It Be Evaluated?, Marilou Shames Giacofci
STEMPS Theses & Dissertations
The Central Midwest Educational Research's (CEMREL) Elements of Mathematics Program (EM) for gifted students was piloted in Tidewater for five years. Before deciding whether to continue or expand the program, it was necessary to devise a method of evaluating the program's effectiveness. In the process of this evaluation, two separate comparisons were made:
- a lateral comparison between an experimental and an existing control class over a period of four years, and
- a longitudinal comparison of successive experimental classes over a four year period.
Lateral Study
To insure comparability between the experimental and control classes, both were administered the …
Effects Of Colors, Noun Position, And Verb Proximity On The Acquisition Of Direct Objects, Ronald M. Dohr
Effects Of Colors, Noun Position, And Verb Proximity On The Acquisition Of Direct Objects, Ronald M. Dohr
Dissertations and Theses
The purpose of this study is to determine if colors can differentially be applied as teaching tools for pre-school children. Previous studies have shown that pre-school children are easily distracted in language development by external stimulation. Studies have also shown that brighter color hues can arouse and facilitate performance of subjects on given tasks. This experiment is an attempt to measure performance of word manipulation by usage of colors. Three independent variables have been selected as stimuli to measure direct object acquisition. Measurement of color, noun position, and verb proximity will be assessed in connection with subject performance on given …

A Comparative Study Of The Reponses By Varying Socioeconomic Groups On General Knowledge And Categorization Tasks, Margo I. Keller
Dissertations and Theses
This study sought to determine if there are any "cultural" or economic level patterns of behavior in responding to tasks involving categorizing pictures and recalling general knowledge. The Daberon School Headiness Device (1972), which contains subtests for general knowledge and categorization, was used to assess four groups of children: 1) lower-SES white, 2) lower-SES black, 3) middle-SES white, and 4) middle-SES black. This study involved thirty black and thirty white children between the ages of five years and five years, eleven months. All subjects were screened to determine race, age, auditory acuity, speech intelligibility, subject cooperation, and socioeconomic status (SES). …

The most important concern of Seventh-day Adventists is the proper and fullest development of character. This study investigates perception patterns on character values and factors influencing positive character development held by subjects on a church supported university campus (Andrews University).
Method
The self-administered questionnaire, developed by Kreps (1970) to examine the attitudes held by college students concerning values that are important in promoting positive character development in individuals, was modified in part to conform to background characteristics of Andrews University students. The socio-economic class of each subject was determined by the McGuire-White Social Class Index (1955). A percentage and …
