A warning against some dangers, tendencies that can erode the quality and meaning of education. First, the danger of undue emphasis on science and technology. A second danger is in the rapidly growing impersonalism of higher education. A third is the danger of missing the real, though more intangible point - the development of taste, of judgment, of sensitivity. It is not enough to be free. It is a question of what you are free to do -- and what you are free not to do. What the college should provide is a climate, a fellowship in which these judgments …

Achievement, personality, and interest tests are widely used in the schools. Some of the tests that are often employed include the Strong Vocational Interest Blank, the Kuder Preference Record, the Otis Quick-Scoring Mental Ability Tests, and the MMPI. These tests have proven useful in assessing individual differences, and in providing the basis for decisions by educators in respect to student grade placement, achievement standing, counseling services, and vocational training. However, social behavior is another important facet of a student's performance. The social behavior of a student is, of course, associated with a student's performance in school. Ways to objectively and …

An Experiment To Improve Reading And Spelling Through A Correlated Social Studies Program With Emphasis On English As A Second Language For Bilingual Underachievers Of Low Socio-Economic Background, Geraldine W. Wilcox
Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs
The history of education is replete with accounts of efforts by sensitive teachers and administrators to cope with the great range of individual differences. Approaches have included individual projects, tutoring on a one-to-one basis, programmed learning, team teaching, core and block programs, and a variety of organizational plans such as crossgrade grouping, continuous progress, non-graded classrooms, and multi-age classes. Organization and materials can only provide the environment and arrangements which enable a teacher to try to meet the educational needs of all the pupils in the class. What a teacher is and does remains the crucial variable as to which …

An Analysis Of Study Skills Taught By Intermediate Basal Readers, Richard D. Van Dongen
Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs
An important skill area of the complex reading process is that of study skills. Differences of opinion exist regarding what these skills are and how important they are in the development of the reading process. They are seen to be necessary for reading in content field subjects, and instruction is provided in the basal reading program for their development.

An Inquiry Into The Effects Of Goals In The Motivation Of Adult Students In The New Mexico Adult Basic Education Program, Thomas Manuel Trujillo
Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs
Adult basic education has only in recent years become an integral part of the total educational picture in New Mexico. Since 1964, federal funds under Title II, Part B of the Economic Opportunity Act, and more recently under Title III, Public Law 89-750 in the Amendments of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965, have been procured for the teaching of adults. Because of its relative newness no studies have been made in New Mexico which have identified the goals and motivations of the adult students who are participating in this program.

Problem. This study was undertaken to discover if spelling would be improved if the words to be learned were based on some other area of the curriculum and were a natural outgrowth of the activities in that area, rather than an arbitrary list taken from the spelling workbook currently in use in the Albuquerque Public Schools.

The Relationship Of Anxiety, Intelligence And Reading Achievement, Margaret R. Fry
Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs
Educators have become more and more concerned with the emotional area in the lives of children. M special interest has been that of anxiety and its relationship to learning. Various scales have been developed to measure anxiety in children. Several investigators, such as Wrightman, Cox, Feather, Lunneborg, and Pachecho have made significant studies which show that anxiety or fear correlates negatively with achievement. Further, Phillips, Hindsman and Jennings,
Feldhusenand Klausmeier, Cauble, and others have shown that anxiety or fear and intelligence are negatively correlated. Grooms and Endler and Maltzman, Eisman, and Morrisett found contradictory results in that high anxiety did …
Centralized Control For Catholic Schools In Sydney, New South Wales, Ronald Thomas Fitzgerald
Centralized Control For Catholic Schools In Sydney, New South Wales, Ronald Thomas Fitzgerald
Quarterly Review of Australian Education
Schools run by the Catholic Church in Australia have traditionally formed a loose and fragmented pattern of institutions run independently by particular parishes and religious congregations. Established late in the nineteenth century a s an alternative but parallel system to government schools, Catholic education caters for almost one fifth of the nation's student population. In maintaining their long- standing general objective of providing Catholic schooling for all Catholic pupils, Church authorities have been hard pressed to expand their school facilities sufficiently to meet the great post-war rise in enrolments. These tasks have proved beyond the resources of the individual parish …

I. THE PROBLEM
Statement of the problem. There is no controversy over the importance of reading instruction in the modern school curriculum. The ability to read is essential for learning in every field of knowledge. The purpose of this study was to investigate how individual differences could be more effectively provided for in the middle grades by (1) determining an indication of pupil interest, mental maturity, and reading achievement among three fourth grade classrooms, (2) establishing a method of procedure by which individualized instruction could be executed without utilization of the traditional basal reading approach, and (3) making an analytical …

An Analysis Of Doctoral Programs In Educational Administration In A Five-State Region, John Robert Grable
Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs
Educational administration in the United States developed as an extra-duty or part-time assignment. As such an assignment it was seen basically as responsibility someone had to take and that almost any good teacher could take if he would. It was seen as something one did from common sense and learned to do simply from doing it. It was seen as an assignment with little prestige and with an extra stipend. There were a great many such starting places in the many small schools. In the city schools, entry into administration and progress in it developed to a large degree on …

Project Upward Bound was a program initiated by the Office of Economic Opportunity to wage war on talent waste in our high schools throughout the United States today. The program itself was really a pre-college program for low income youngsters. It was perhaps best summed up in the following quotations from Vice President Hubert H. Humphrey, at the 1965 White House Conference on Education: "Millions of youngsters from impoverished backgrounds are caught in a downward spiral of second-rate education, functional illiteracy, delinquency, dependency and despair. How can we halt this tragic waste of human resources? How can we turn it …

A Taxonomic Approach To The Evaluation Of Secondary School English Program., George Hirshfield
Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs
A taxonomy is a classifying device. There are essentially two types of taxonomies. The first is the non-hierarchial one, which is used to keep similar things together. The classification of English textbooks by subject, e.g., literature, spelling, and grammar would be non-hierarchial. The second is the hierarchial one, which is used to classify elements along some continuum. The classification of English literature books according to the relative difficulty of vocabulary would be hierarchial. The latter type can be most useful for viewing the organization of a system of things or activities and is used toward those ends in this study, …

A Process Model For Educational Change, Its Development And Use As An Evaluative Instrument., Roger L. Harrell
Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs
The Santa Fe Public Schools have recently experienced an educational change. The formal organizational 'structure of the secondary curriculum has been changed from a one-track to a four-track system of comprehensive education. This change received official board approval on March 16, 1965.
Undoubtedly, the local Board of Education was convinced that 0anta Fe needed a four-track organizational structure in its secondary schools. How was the change brought about? Who was involved? Was it planned change? If so, what principles or steps were followed in the change process? These are just a few of the questions which prompted this study.
