Pssa Panic And Paranoia: Effects On Student Teachers, Linda Dessoye

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal

It has been several years since the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) was renamed the No Child Left Behind Act. In this major expansion of the federal role in education, the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act of 2001 required annual testing, specified a method for judging school effectiveness, set a timeline for progress, and established specific consequences in the case of failure (Wenning, 2003). The Washington Post referred to it as the “broadest rewriting of federal education policy in decades”(Milbank, 2002). The effects of the overwhelming pressure to perform well on the Pennsylvania System of School Assessment (PSSA) …

Teacher Migration From High-Performing Middle Schools: A Case Study, Richard Conley Jul 2007

Teacher Migration From High-Performing Middle Schools: A Case Study, Richard Conley

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal

I recently conducted fieldwork to explore the dynamics of teacher migration and understand how it relates to teachers’ perceptions and attitudes. The research was conducted through the eyes of a sixth grade language arts/social studies’ teacher working in a middle school I will refer to as PLC (Professional Learning Community) Middle School. By spending extensive time and conducting multiple interviews with the teacher and other staff members, I was able to explore some of the reasons and conditions why teachers leave schools, particularly high-performing schools to teach in other high performing schools. Attending weekly meetings at all levels and content …

Telling Stories And Living Art: Making Room For Social Justice And Diversity In Graduate Education, Four Arrows

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal

Indigenous scholars discovered that indigenous knowledge is far more than the binary opposite of western knowledge. As a concept, indigenous knowledge benchmarks the limitations of Eurocentric theory — its methodology, evidence, and conclusions — reconceptualizes the resilience and self-reliance of indigenous peoples, and underscores the importance of their own philosophies, heritages, and educational processes. Indigenous knowledge fills the ethical and knowledge gaps in Eurocentric education, research, and scholarship (2002:5).

The Creation Of A Center For Technology In Education, Jody Britten

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal

Institutions of higher education (IHE) have long been invested in the creation of centers for further study, application, evaluation, and research. Larwood and Gattiker (1999) argue that centers must be committed to making an impact on everyday public practice. Furthermore, these authors support that there are clear benefits to centers when there is a purpose that exceeds thinking and data collection and concentrates clearly on influencing practice for goal attainment.

An Assessment Of The Perceived Benefits Of Extracurricular Activity On Academic Achievement At Paramount High School, Michael Zwart

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal

One of the many problems facing today’s schools is the need to raise academic achievement while facing the continuing issue of budget limitations. Paramount High School is in a lower socioeconomic suburban community in southern CA. Eighty seven percent of the students in the district receive free or reduced lunch and 21.9% were below the poverty level. Forty percent of the high school students were foreign born, 71.8% speak a language other than English at home, 34% were identified as English Language Learners, 50% of the students’ parents never graduated from high school, and the 81% Hispanic population creates a …

Alumni Assessment: Providing Insight To University Leadership, Janine Kraus

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal

When determining the effectiveness of an academic program it is important to assess the program internally through the institution and academic leadership. But, it is also important to assess the graduates that have benefited from the program. This study assessed a doctoral program at a regional university in a metropolitan area. The doctoral program was eliminated due to financial constraints. However, an alumni evaluation was not conducted on this program prior to it be eliminated. The purpose of this study was to conduct an alumni evaluation on this doctoral program to determine its effects with alumni.

Critical Thought Analysis: Bridging The Gap Between Academia And Business, Heidi Gregory-Mina Apr 2007

Critical Thought Analysis: Bridging The Gap Between Academia And Business, Heidi Gregory-Mina

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal

Critical thought has been taught to students in varying degrees over the years, but employers believe that critical thinking skills are still lacking in employees (Braun 2004). Some of the barriers between employer expectations and academia concerning critical thought arise from a lack of congruity regarding the meaning of critical thought. However, nearly all researchers agree teaching critical thinking skills is a desirable aim of education (Hemming, 2000). According to Cheung (2002), critical thinking covers four dimensions: (1) cognitive, (2) motivational, (3) ideological, and (4) behavioral. However, other definitions of critical thought range from critical thinking originating from the left …

Formulation Of “Questions – Answers” In Teaching-Learning Process As A Way Of Improving Learning Of Students At University Level, Mdel Mar Badia Martin, Candido Roselle, Antoni Tarrida

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal

One of the main things in a process of teaching-learning consists of making hierarchical contents of the programs and to determine specific and clearly which are the objectives of the course. It is not always easy for a teacher to discriminate the relative importance of the program contents. If we consider that the questions the students do are a reflection of what the teachers consider important, the exams could be considered as an adequate source to know their opinion about the contents that a student on a topic should know. Nevertheless, more important than the content itself, is the form …

Managing Professional Competencies Of Teaching Staff In The University: Views Of Finnish University Leaders, Mark Safferstone Apr 2007

Managing Professional Competencies Of Teaching Staff In The University: Views Of Finnish University Leaders, Mark Safferstone

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal

Higher education institutions should recognize that their staff are their vital and valued asset. The university should therefore, commit itself to encouraging and enabling staff to realize their potential by providing opportunities for all colleagues to gain the knowledge, skills, and experience necessary for them to enhance their contribution to meeting individual, area, and organizational objectives. Not only that staff development should be among a clutch of institutional innovations thrust upon universities, it is a technique or tool to increase quality, efficiency and output, it can be associated with high quality professional performance resulting in career advancement, strategic development, and …

Leadership And Recruitment: What Leaders Can Learn From Coach Robert Montgomery Knight: A Conceptual View, Stephen Anyamele

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal

It has always puzzled me why organizations do not seem to take the same amount of time and energy to interview and recruit prospective employees as that shown by sports teams. In this essay, I will be looking at recruitment and leadership typically found in a business environment and that found in a basketball (sports) context; specifically Division I college basketball.

The Management Of Creativity: Redux, Susan Madsen Apr 2007

The Management Of Creativity: Redux, Susan Madsen

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal

The immediate problem facing the authors was replacing someone with the background and stature of Joseph Abboud with an individual or, as it eventually worked out, four individuals with differing creative backgrounds and levels of success that would be of benefit to the students (in the spring 2006 semester the course was offered to undergraduate business students) enrolled in the course. Replacing Abboud proved to be not as difficult as the authors originally imagined. Within a period of three weeks, four individuals with diverse backgrounds in film, music, sports entertainment, and entrepreneurship were identified and agreed to take part in …

Authentic Dialogue In Organizations A Dangerous Idea: Viewing The Art Of Authentic Dialogue Through The Science Of Evolutionary Psychology, Melinda Spohn Apr 2007

Authentic Dialogue In Organizations A Dangerous Idea: Viewing The Art Of Authentic Dialogue Through The Science Of Evolutionary Psychology, Melinda Spohn

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal

Whether verbal or displayed through body and facial expression, communication is the foundation of what it means to be human. When an infant, driven by its biological propensity for language utters its first words, it marks the start of a transformation toward human interaction. Embedded within this interaction are human emotions that elicit an array of behaviors, some more favorable than others. It is at this juncture the art of authentic dialogue, and its use in organizations, is examined.

“Go Live In ’05”—From Hierarchy To Shared Governance In Higher Education, Peter A. Maresco Apr 2007

“Go Live In ’05”—From Hierarchy To Shared Governance In Higher Education, Peter A. Maresco

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal

Higher education is in the midst of a major transformation evidenced by several factors: greater demands from stakeholders; pressure to increase student enrollment, financial uncertainty, limited resources, and a responsibility to contribute to the community’s civic and economic development. Faculty and staff in higher education are challenged to deliver education in innovative ways. This innovation requires an expedient method of governance and necessitates careful examination of the organization’s structural, cultural, and decision-making processes. To meet these demands, leaders in higher education must examine decision-making processes and design governance models that respond quickly and efficiently to their myriad of constituents.

Women University Presidents: Career Paths And Educational Backgrounds, Pam Springer, Cynthia Clark

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal

During the past few decades, research and scholarly dialogue focused on the topic of academic careers has increased. Although academe is just one of numerous industries whose career systems might be studied, it is a large and growing sector (Baruch & Hall, 2004). And, according to Baruch and Hall (2004), “with the accelerated level of available knowledge and the pressing need to develop human capital, there is a growing need for research on careers in academe” (p. 237). Rubin (2004) wrote of the development, attraction, and retention of outstanding leaders as one of eight fundamental challenges in higher education today. …

Promoting Student Activism Among Our Millennial Students, Brian E. Cole Jan 2007

Promoting Student Activism Among Our Millennial Students, Brian E. Cole

Growth: The Journal of the Association for Christians in Student Development

This comprehensive literature review investigates student activism to provide a generational backdrop to the varied types and methods of college student activism in the Millennial generation. After the explosive student uprisings of the 1960’s and 1970’s, it would be easy to deduce that in the absence of such high profile activities, student activism post-1980 is non-existent or insignificant. However, current literature suggests student activism is alive and well, although it often looks quite different. This makes student activism among Millennial students as important and worthy of study as any earlier generation. But to understand recent activism, one must be aware …
