The Development Of The Public Schools In New Mexico Between 1848 And 1900, Thomas J. Mayfield Jr.
Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs
The conditions of New Mexico and its time of annexation to the United States were different from most other territories that had been added. The population was composed almost entirely of Spanish descent and Indians. Their customs and ideas of church and state differed completely from those of the American subjects. The climatic and geographic conditions of the territory caused the living conditions to be entirely different. The problem in this study is to show how these conditions affected the educational development and how many obstacles were overcome in establishing a system of public schools. The legal status of the …

Tenure And Turnover Of Public School Teachers In New Mexico, Burton T. Williams
Tenure And Turnover Of Public School Teachers In New Mexico, Burton T. Williams
Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs
It is generally recognized that, other things being equal, teachers who have been in a system long enough to become acquainted with local conditions are able to give more efficient service to the schools than new teachers. The question of turnover of teachers in service has come up within recent years as one of the outstanding and pressing problems concerning the administration of our school systems. It is generally understood that the mobility of our teachers is far in excess of what it should be for the attainment of the best results in our schools. Teachers that are on the …

Insurance Practices Of School Boards In Municipal And County Schools Of New Mexico With Evaluation And Standards, Owen O. Sabin
Insurance Practices Of School Boards In Municipal And County Schools Of New Mexico With Evaluation And Standards, Owen O. Sabin
Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs
Since New Mexico schools, exclusive of private schools and higher institutions, spend $135,000 each year for insurance premiums, considerable thought might well be given to the question whether or not this money is wisely spent. The value of insurance is no longer seriously questioned, but as yet few public officials or school administrators seem to recognize that it should be purchased as economically as possible, consistent with good business practices and safety.
The problem undertaken in this study is to discover the practices of New Mexico school boards in the handling of insurance in public school property.

Importance of the Study
To-day in the United States nearly a million persons are employed as teachers in the public schools. As a class of public social workers, employed by the state. or by the local school districts as agents of the state, they have long been dependent upon the will of legislators and the wishes or dictates or local communities to establish and …

A Comparison Of Individual And Group Methods Of Teaching Work-Type Reading In The Fourth Grades Of The Albuquerque Public Schools, Elizabeth C. Westerfield
Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs
In this study a somewhat different line of research is attempted. The endeavor here is to evaluate two approaches to the teaching of work-type reading. One of these is the traditional or group plan, the other an individualized scheme a great deal like that recently mentioned by Washburn.
An answer here is sought as to whether work type reading is taught more effectively to fourth grade children through group instruction or by a highly individualized technique. The measure of effectiveness was that as indicated by scores on standardized tests interpreted as reading ages, and other evidence that this will be …

2. Reorganization Of Meade County's Schools, Raymond Gibson
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
The purpose of this study is to deal with the undesirable conditions of the county which could be corrected. Why should there be three high schools in the eastern half of the county and none in the western half of the county? Why should one-room schools exist with an average daily attendance of less than ten when the same school could be consolidated with other schools without causing any child to walk more than two miles? Why should there be 225 children in Meade County eligible for high school who are not attending school at any place? Why should the …

Teachers And Social Leadership, Emil E. Samuelson
Teachers And Social Leadership, Emil E. Samuelson
All Faculty Scholarship for the College of Education and Professional Studies
The argument that the schools can do a great deal to direct and facilitate social change seems valid when we consider the school's sphere of influence. Today a million teachers are entrusted with the task of educating more than 25,000,000 pupils. For twelve years these millions of boys and girls are under the direction of school teachers--certainly no other professional or civic group has an opportunity of like magnitude. If the teaching group should effectively unite upon a comprehensive program its influence on social change would be considerable.
