Ethical Conundrums In Rural South Africa: Lost In Translation, Eric D. Teman J.D., Ph.D., Veronica M. Richard Ph.D. Jul 2016

Ethical Conundrums In Rural South Africa: Lost In Translation, Eric D. Teman J.D., Ph.D., Veronica M. Richard Ph.D.

Eric D Teman, J.D., Ph.D.

We engage in story-retelling by recounting, reconstructing, and reflecting on our experiences as evaluators in a cross-cultural setting, a South African village. A principal focus on the serendipitous ethical and methodological issues that arose is highlighted. As most ethical dilemmas go, solutions are not clear. Therefore, the authors spend time critically considering the soundness of the decisions that were made, from the lack of diversity of the research team, to the ways we interacted with local citizens, to research design issues. We share our thoughts through a confessional tale via research poetry.

Evaluate Item Dependency In An Aptitude Reasoning Test, Luc T. Le Jun 2016

Evaluate Item Dependency In An Aptitude Reasoning Test, Luc T. Le

Dr Luc Tu Le

The Special Tertiary Admissions Test (STAT), developed by the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER), is as an alternate method of gaining entry into Australian university courses, for people who do not hold a recent Year 12 certificate in Australia. The test compromises 64 scored multiple-choice items, half of which are Verbal Reasoning questions and the other half, Quantitative Reasoning questions. Items were designed in testlets, where they could share the same stimulus (example, text paragraph). A natural question here was if the local independency assumption was violated in any sets of the items of the testlets. To investigate the …

Attending To Scientific#12; Practices Within Undergraduate Research Experiences, Gina M. Quan, Chandra Anne Turpen, Andrew R. Elby

Gina Quan

Ford (2015) argues for viewing “scientific practice” not as a list of particular skills, but rather, more
holistically as “sets of regularities of behaviors and social interactions” among scientists. This
conceptualization of scientific practices foregrounds how they meaningfully connect to one another and are
purposefully employed in order to explain nature. We apply this framework in the context of undergraduate
research experiences (UREs) to understand the early forms of student engagement in scientific practices,
and how these specific forms of engagement may be consequential for students’ future participation. Using
video from interviews with students and research mentors, we argue that …

Monitoring Risk And Return: Critical Insights Into Graduate Coursework Engagement And Outcomes, Daniel Edwards

Dr Daniel Edwards

Coursework graduate courses have been a significant growth area over the last few decades and are of immense importance to Australian higher education. The knowledge and skills achieved through postgraduate study make a significant contribution to individuals and society. Nearly one quarter of all higher education students in Australia are enrolled in a coursework postgraduate degree. These students generate substantial income for institutions through the fees they pay. Nearly one third of all international students in Australian higher education are enrolled in postgraduate coursework degrees. Overall, international students make up around 50 per cent of all coursework masters enrolments, a …

Engaging College Communities: The Impact Of Residential Colleges In Australian Higher Education, Hamish Coates, Daniel Edwards Jun 2016

Engaging College Communities: The Impact Of Residential Colleges In Australian Higher Education, Hamish Coates, Daniel Edwards

Dr Daniel Edwards

Residential colleges play a vital role in many of the best universities in the world. Intuitively, it seems clear that living in a university-affiliated residence would enhance students’ educational involvement and outcomes. Reports from those closely involved in residential colleges provide a considerable amount of support for this proposition. Anecdotal reports help build a rich picture of residential life in Australian higher education, but overly relying on such data limits the extent to which colleges can be situated, compared and understood within broader contexts. Hence it is helpful to complement perceptual reports with data that offer more objective insights into …

A Typology Of Mixed Methods Research Designs, Nancy L. Leech, Anthony J. Onwuegbuzie

Nancy Leech

The mixed methods paradigm is still in its adolescence, and, thus, is still relatively unknown and confusing to many researchers. In general, mixed methods research represents research that involves collecting, analyzing, and interpreting quantitative and qualitative data in a single study or in a series of studies that investigate the same underlying phenomenon. Over the last several years, a plethora of research designs have been developed. However, the number of designs that currently prevail leaves the doctoral student, the beginning researcher, and even the experienced researcher who is new to the field of mixed methods research with the challenge of …

Nancy Leech

Despite the abundance of published material on conducting focus groups, scant specific information exists on how to analyze focus group data in social science research. Thus, the authors provide a new qualitative framework for collecting and analyzing focus group data. First, they identify types of data that can be collected during focus groups. Second, they identify the qualitative data analysis techniques best suited for analyzing these data. Third, they introduce what they term as a micro-interlocutor analysis, wherein meticulous information about which participant responds to each question, the order in which each participant responds, response characteristics, the nonverbal communication used, …

Utilizing Mixed Methods In Teaching Environments To Reduce Statistics Anxiety, Anthony J. Onwuegbuzie, Nancy L. Leech, Mari Murtonen, Juhani Tähtinen

Nancy Leech

Many students deem statistics courses to be the most difficult in their programs of study, providing mostly negative experiences characterized by high levels of anxiety. Recent research on statistics anxiety has identified several teacher characteristics that help reduce students’ statistics anxiety levels. However, little attention has been placed on the role that the research-based curriculum plays in reducing anxiety levels. Thus, the present paper introduces a curricular framework for alleviating students’ negative feelings towards statistics. Building on the works of Onwuegbuzie and Leech (2004, 2005a), we contend that the best way to accomplish this is by eliminating statistics courses from …
