Serving Students With Disabilities: Institutions & Programs, Aaron W. Hughey, Casey Yocum
Faculty/Staff Personal Papers
There are around 26 million students enrolled in the 6,000 colleges and universities in the United States (Bareham, 2021). Appoximately 11% of all postsecondary undergraduates report having some form of disability (Accredited Schools Online, 2022), and many institutions have programs tailored to students with special needs (Bryant, 2021; Ivywise, 2022). There is an important distinction between colleges and universities that have, as their primary mission, the provision of higher education to students with disabilities and institutions that have specialized programs and services for these populations. yet, there are many campuses that fall into the latter category, but relatively few in …

Faculty/Staff Personal Papers
The accreditation system for colleges and universities is broken.
It has been broken for quite some time even though those on both sides of the equation refuse to acknowledge what has become increasingly obvious to those of us who work in the academy: Accreditation has evolved into a potent mechanism for perpetuating power structures that have become entrenched in the culture of higher education.

Delusions, Demographics, And Denial: Higher Education's Future In Kentucky And Elsewhere, Aaron W. Hughey, Karl Laves
Faculty/Staff Personal Papers
It doesn’t take a genius to see that everything is not quite right in higher education these days. The feeling that things can’t go on as they have in the past is slowing sinking in for those associated with our colleges and universities. A day of reckoning is coming.
As most college students can attest, the cost of attending college continues to escalate exponentially while the return on that investment is increasingly suspect. The average student loan debt incurred per student is around $38,000, while the average annual salary a newly minted college graduate in Kentucky can expect to earn …

“Mr. President, we are not employees of the university. We are the university.” Some of you are no doubt familiar with this quote. It was the response Isidore Rabi, a distinguished member of the faculty at Columbia University, had for President Dwight Eisenhower, who referred to the faculty as “employees of the university” in 1950.
Does A College Degree Really Influence Economic Success? It's Complicated, Aaron W. Hughey
Does A College Degree Really Influence Economic Success? It's Complicated, Aaron W. Hughey
Faculty/Staff Personal Papers
Higher education in the United States is currently facing a myriad of challenges, most of which are self-inflicted. Having a more educated populace, in and of itself, does not necessarily guarantee any advantages to anyone. We can blame shifting demographics, evolving economic realities and changing societal priorities – but the ultimate responsibility for our present circumstance lies squarely with those within the academy.

Book Proposal: Reimagining Higher Education: A Guide To Creating The Competent College Graduate, Molly Kerby
Faculty/Staff Personal Papers
Given the climate of distrust, colleges and universities are examining strategies to enable them to remain relevant. Efforts to answer the recent outcry for productive, effective, and evidencedbased outcomes include adapting curricula and degree programs to better prepare graduates for employment. Competency-based education (CBE) programs are at the forefront of these approaches. Although not a new concept, CBE has shifted from its vocational training roots to its current attention on student results. The acquisition of competence requires an engaged learner who practices self-reflection (Dreyfus, 2004). Albanese, et al. (2008) suggest competencies should be outcome focused, emphasize applied-learning, and be measurable. …

Socialization And Retention Of Part-Time Doctoral Students: A Review Of Ten Years Of Literature, Mildred Cunningham, Christy L. Spurlock
Faculty/Staff Personal Papers
The growing population of part-time doctoral students has created a need for research into the determining factors for part-time doctoral student success, especially related to retention and program completion. In order to gain a better understanding of the current literature and its importance, the researchers used purposive sampling and thematic analysis to compile emerging factors from over 20 recent articles. Three themes materialized: the growing part-time student population; the differing needs of part-time versus full-time students; and the need for specialized student support resources for part-timers. This article explains the analysis and present findings that indicate that the socialization process …

The purpose of the study was to identify the barriers and challenges to EdD completion. The EdD program director, EdD faculty, and WKU will be able to use information from the study to develop retention resources, intervention strategies, and perhaps make even more sweeping changes to confront the obstacles to EdD persistence.
This study utilized qualitative design based on a partial case study with holistic, case-orientated design. Weiss (1998) asserted that, "Qualitative evaluation has a special advantage for …

Graduate Faculty Workloads: Recognizing Scholarship And Student Engagement At The Comprehensive Regional Institution, Mark Doggett
Faculty/Staff Personal Papers
The character of graduate work is one of scholarly endeavor with highly qualified graduate faculty that work with students to culminate their experience through the completion of a graduate project, thesis, or dissertation. Inherent in this activity is the expectation that faculty will devote themselves to produce scholarly works of their own, spend the time needed to counsel and guide students through the process, and serve as members or chairs of various thesis/project/dissertation committees. Additionally, an increasingly accepted perspective of scholarly activity is the generation of external support for programs, research, and regional economic development, of which faculty and graduate …
