Innovations in technology are making it more exciting to teach and to engage young minds to their fullest potential. Ownership in the school is returning back to the original owners, parents, teachers and most importantly, the students. Schools are no longer "run" by …

When I first entered the administration program, I remember thinking that when I finished classes, I would be prepared to become a successful administrator with the wealth of knowledge I had gained. As the time draws nearer, I see that experience, talking to other professionals, and the knowledge that has been afforded me, all balance out as guides for the near future. The knowledge I will have gained from this program will be only a part of my knowledge base. By this I mean, it is important that one does not see oneself as having all of the answers, but …

As I look back on my coursework, the one issue that continuously appeared was the idea of establishing a vision. Some of the articles and books that are referred to in the body of this paper are written by African- Americans about the plight of our African-American children in yesterday's, today's and tomorrow's schools. In writing this paper I address some basic needs for all children. Yet of most pressing concern to me are the African-American student and other students of color. Brown versus Topeka, Kansas was in 1954, but in the eyes of many African-Americans separate but equal is alive and well. With the prospect of a voucher system looming on the horizon it is being driven home even …

The Status Of The In Loco Parentis Doctrine In American Higher Education, William Lee Maravetz

Though the concept of in loco parentis as applied to higher education lost its legal status during the late 1960s and early 1970s, many higher education authorities believe that the underlying philosophy of in loco parentis is re-emerging. This paper examines the history of the in loco parentis doctrine in American higher education. By drawing on a number of sources, the fluctuating legal and philosophical applications of the doctrine are traced from their origins in colonial America to their status in the higher education system of today.
