The influence of technology in the school setting has grown dramatically in recent decades. It is critical that school leaders manage the influx of technology effectively and leverage it appropriately to benefit the operational and instructional aspects of the school.
The Crisis Of Character In The 21st Century American University, Its Historical Counterparts, And Suggested Remedies, Tyler David Norton
The Crisis Of Character In The 21st Century American University, Its Historical Counterparts, And Suggested Remedies, Tyler David Norton
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Higher education in the United States is in the midst of a crisis. Many administrators and faculty are grappling with the question, “what is the purpose of a college education?” In an attempt to resolve this crisis, some education leaders and policy makers have turned to false idols. They embraced student learning outcomes and quantifiable measurement metrics to justify the university’s raison d’etre. This occurred at the same time as institutions abandoned their religious heritage, they incidentally threw away moral elements as well.
International Branch Campuses In China : Quest For Legitimacy, Li Zhang
International Branch Campuses In China : Quest For Legitimacy, Li Zhang
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
A new organization often encounters the “liability of newness” that increases its chance of failing as a start-up enterprise (Freeman et al, 1983). New organizations located in a foreign country also face the “liability of foreignness” (Zaheer & Mosakowski, 1997). By gaining legitimacy, organizations can obtain the resources they need to become sustainable. The liabilities of newness and foreignness aptly describe the international branch campuses that have been set up in China.
Legtimacy Of Cross-Border Higher Education Policy : A Comparative Case Study Of Dubai And Ras Al Khaimah, Christine Farrugia
Legtimacy Of Cross-Border Higher Education Policy : A Comparative Case Study Of Dubai And Ras Al Khaimah, Christine Farrugia
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
This study investigates the legitimacy of policies to import cross-border higher education (CBHE) in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). This study compares two of the UAE’s higher education subsystems – Dubai and Ras Al Khaimah – to understand how higher education stakeholders in the UAE interpret foreign involvement in higher education and investigate how those interpretations contribute to stakeholders’ assessments of the legitimacy of the country’s CBHE policies. The legitimacy of cross-border higher education policies is a potentially contentious issue because the higher education resources that are imported into host countries under CBHE policies are usually intended to supplement existing …
Predictors Of U.S. Teachers' Use Of Metacognition In Mathematics Instruction, Regina Lewis
Predictors Of U.S. Teachers' Use Of Metacognition In Mathematics Instruction, Regina Lewis
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
American schools have been struggling with improving achievement in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics for decades. For the last four decades, the overall mathematics performance of 17 year-olds on the National Assessment of Educational Progress has not shown any significant improvement. Mathematics teachers can use metacognitive techniques to make immediate adjustments in instruction that may assist students in becoming more skillful problem solvers. The purpose of this study was to provide new knowledge about the potential predictors of mathematics teachers' use of the six subfactors of the Metacognitive Awareness Inventory for Teachers. The inventory was administered to 120 K-12 grade …
Teachers' Perceptions Of Manipulatives During Middle School Math Instruction, Angela L. Vizzi
Teachers' Perceptions Of Manipulatives During Middle School Math Instruction, Angela L. Vizzi
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
In a Colorado school district, school personnel and parents were concerned that middle school math proficiency levels were low for 2011-2014 and math teachers were not using manipulatives in their classes to increase math performance. The district's math coordinator did not foresee providing specific professional development (PD) for math manipulative use to address these concerns. Without this PD, math teachers may be ill-quipped to teach math concepts when using manipulatives, which, in turn, could lead to further poor math performance. The purpose of this qualitative bounded collective case study was to explore middle school teachers' perceptions of PD and perceived …
Teachers' Perceptions Of The Use Of Small-Group Tutorial, Karen Y. Johnson
Teachers' Perceptions Of The Use Of Small-Group Tutorial, Karen Y. Johnson
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
This study addressed the implementation of the tutorial program currently in use at an urban school district in Mississippi. Because successful completion of assessments is a graduation requirement, the study site implemented the tutorial program to help at-risk students improve their academic outcomes on state-mandated assessments in Biology I, United States History, English II, Algebra I. The purpose of this study, guided by Bloom's theory of mastery learning, was to examine the perceptions of the teachers who served as tutors in the program. Using the narrative inquiry method, the research focused on the implementation of the tutorial program, the perceived …
Evaluative Feedback: How K-12 Teachers Respond, Deetta Lorick Andersen
Evaluative Feedback: How K-12 Teachers Respond, Deetta Lorick Andersen
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
This sequential mixed methods study addressed the need for research that both described and explained how teachers of varying experience respond to administrative evaluative feedback. Formative evaluation theory of Scriven and professional growth models of Steffy and Fessler served as theoretical models for data analysis. An online survey asking teachers how they changed their practices and what accounted for their response was received from 270 teachers in 1 Midwestern state. Of these, 9 teachers of varying experience were interviewed. The quantitative data showed that most teachers do not change practices on the 8 state teaching standards in response to feedback. …

Diabetes and depression are prevalent diseases that cause morbidity and mortality. Diabetes is a heterogeneous metabolic disease in which hypoglycemia is a central feature. Depression is associated with increased counter-regulatory, hormone release, and alteration in glucose transport function. Depression occurs in some individuals with diabetes and is associated with poor metabolic control, inadequate control of diet, …
The Adjustment Of First Year African American Women To Predominately White Institutions: Implications For Best Practices, Maisha Beasley
The Adjustment Of First Year African American Women To Predominately White Institutions: Implications For Best Practices, Maisha Beasley
Doctoral Dissertations
Currently, both scholarly literature and educational practice are lacking depth and scope about the lived experience of African American (AA) female students, and, as a result, they lack effectiveness for this population of students. In particular, they do not address the varying ways AA female students adjust to the university during their first year, the most critical year for student retention and persistence in the college experience (Pike & Kuh, 2005), nor do they recognize how intersectionalities of identities in AA women are salient to successes and challenges at PWIs. This study addresses this gap in the research by not …

Higher Education In Ecuador: A Reflective Analysis, Crystal Edenfield
Georgia Journal of College Student Affairs
Over the last decade, many changes have taken place in Ecuador regarding education, specifically higher education. A new president was elected in 2006 and as a result a new constitution was approved in 2008. This new constitution offered educational opportunities to all Ecuadorians. The purpose of this paper is to analyze higher education in Ecuador. It will discuss and react to Ecuador’s demographics as well as the highlights of the country’s higher education system. It will conclude with considering the implications.
