Part I: Reflections

To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development

In virtually all theories of cognitive development, the higher levels include a capacity to engage in some form of metacognition, the ability to think about thinking, to reflect on actions, to come to some understanding of the reasons for being and doing. From these reflections come learning and further development.

Community Education: Processes And Programs, Theodore J. Kowalski Jan 1986

Community Education: Processes And Programs, Theodore J. Kowalski

Educational Leadership Faculty Publications

"Community education is on the threshold of a major breakthrough. It has captured the imagination of both educational and lay leaders throughout the U.S."

Although these words are an appropriate description of community education today, they were written by V. M. Kerensky 14 years ago. An idea that never took hold to the degree its advocates predicted, community education, nevertheless, refuses to die. Over the past two or three years, the interest of educationalleaders has been stimulated once again by this proposal for expanding the mission and decision-making processes of public schools. In 49 of the 50 states (Hawaii being …

Teacher Education And The Politics Of Engagement: The Case For Democratic Schooling, Henry A. Giroux, Peter Mclaren Jan 1986

Teacher Education And The Politics Of Engagement: The Case For Democratic Schooling, Henry A. Giroux, Peter Mclaren

Education Faculty Articles and Research

Henry A. Giroux and Peter McLaren argue that many of the recently recommended public school reforms either sidestep or abandon the principles underlying education for a democratic citizenry developed by John Dewey and others in the early part of this century. Yet, Giroux and McLaren believe that this historical precedent suggests a way of reconceptualizing teaching and public schooling which revives the values of democratic citizenship and social justice. They demonstrate that teachers, as "transformative intellectuals," can reclaim space in schools for the exercise of critical citizenship via an ethical and political discourse that recasts, in emancipatory terms, the relationships …

A Study Of The Attitudes Of Michigan School Board Presidents Toward Superintendents' Political And Policy Leadership In Third And Fourth Class School Districts, Jon Bradley Johnson

Dissertations

The question of whether the school board or the superintendent really governs public schools continues to appear in the literature. An issue related to this question is the amount of political and policy leadership exercised by superintendents.

The purpose of this study was to make a beginning inquiry into current expectations for superintendent political and policy leadership by school board presidents.

Five hypotheses were identified involving variables of political and policy leadership, intraboard cohesion, and size of the district.

The research included requesting data from school board presidents of 513 third and fourth class school districts in Michigan. Eventually 396 …

A Survey And Analysis Of The Beginning Teacher Program In Florida And Its Relationship To Effective Education, Joanne Mullins Olson

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

This study was conducted to determine whether there were significant factors contributing to a teacher's ability to perform effectively in the classroom. An approximate 5% stratified random sample was selected from 9,401 possible subjects in Florida's Beginning Teacher Program between 1982 and 1985. A comparison of descriptive and reportive data was performed for teachers who completed and teachers who did not complete the program.

Statistical measures included the use of contingency tables, chi-square statistic, frequency distributions and t-tests. Results suggested that a teacher's possibility of successfully completing Florida's Beginning Teacher Program was influenced by the participant's age, grade point average, …

The Haitian baccalaureat is a difficult centralized state examination. Every year the percentage of students who pass this examination varies from 20 to 30 percent. There was a need for systematic research of the predominant factors which determine success in the Haitian baccalaureat.

Three hundred and sixteen graduates in the baccalaureat for the 1984-85 school year, 150 Rhetorique Teachers, and forty principals served as subjects in this study. The data came from the official records of the National Department of …

An Experimental Cost Index Model For The Analysis Of Service Cost Differentials Of Iowa School Districts, Dean W. Meier

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The purpose of the study was to construct a service cost index (SCI) for a sample of Iowa school districts and to use the SCI to examine the relationship school district size has to efficiency of educational services delivery. The SCI was based upon the computation of the cost of delivering a fixed market basket of services to a typical student in each of 44 randomly selected Iowa high schools. The Minimum Curriculum Requirements and Standards for Approved Schools, as outlined in the Code of Iowa, comprised the market basket of services. Instruction, administration, support, and transportation cost components comprised …

Student Characteristics Affecting Student Attitudes To The Evaluation Of Instructors, John P. Callahan Jan 1986

Student Characteristics Affecting Student Attitudes To The Evaluation Of Instructors, John P. Callahan

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Declining enrollments and continuing tuition increases are having major impact on all universities. It is a commonly accepted fact that the quality of a university can be directly related to the quality of its faculty. With this assumption in mind, a university must then determine the best method for evaluating the teaching effectiveness of its faculty members. The study is an examination of certain student characteristics that might affect the attitudes of students when evaluating instructors. Seven individual student characteristics (sex, age, academic level, major, nationality, teaching preference and leadership experience) were examined to determine if there was any relationship …

Retention Characteristics And Policy As Suggested By California School Administrators And Teachers, William Bryan Howell

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Problem. There has been no definite conclusions in the literature as to the benefit or harm of retaining students in grade. With the California Legislative Mandate of SB 813, school districts are now required to have policies in effect for the promotion or nonpromotion of students. This study reviewed retention characteristics currently used in retention policy, those mentioned in literature, and the perceptions of administrators and teachers as to the value of these characteristics in retention. A model retention policy was developed from the study. Purpose. The purpose of the study was to determine if there were differences between teachers …
