Spirituality: Relationship Between Grit, Equanimity, Spiritual Qualities And First-Generation College Students, Janett Cordoves

This study investigated the relationship between spirituality and first-generation, undergraduate and graduate college students’ grit, equanimity, and spiritual qualities. The researcher, a higher education professional, sought to highlight spirituality, not religion, as an intervention method for first-generation college students’ retention and success at the university. For the first time since 9/11, American institutions of higher learning are facing the effect of widespread fear among prospective students from around the globe. After the election of President Donald J. Trump in 2016, universities reported the number of international students enrolling in their schools fell by seven percent and continues to decline. Seeking to allay the fear and uncertainty in their international student communities, colleges and universities are resisting proposed immigration policies …

Within this milieu, it is worth considering some of the new policies and services that can improve a campus’s response to sexual and gender-based violence. In particular, this session will explore emerging best practices, including alternatives to universal mandatory reporting as well as programs that provide legal services to student survivors. Time permitting, this session will also touch upon such hot topics as the burden of …
