The Calhoun Intermediate School District serves Calhoun County which is located in Southwestern Michigan, centered approximately at the intersection of I-94 and 1-69. The school system serves students K-12 in 15 individual school districts. It serves as a link between local districts and the State Department of Education, furnishing services that single districts find difficult or impossible to perform. The CISD is operated by an intermediate school district board of education in cooperation with local boards of education and supported by the people of CISD and the people of the State of Michigan.

This study was an attempt to determine how the schools in three Southwestern Michigan counties implemented the decision of the July 17, 1970 Michigan State Supreme Court ruling which required all school districts to provide students with all necessary school supplies. It was evident from the survey conducted that the schools are at different levels of compliance and that the only commonality is that all of them furnish textbooks and paper. When the intern saw problems of an educational nature in department programs, she attempted to intervene to help department personnel solve these problems. Specific incidents are reported.

It is a study of the Forest Hills School District, Grand Rapids, Michigan, following a millage defeat, and depicts the central office administrators as they accept the challenges thrust upon them. It is an analysis of the roles and responsibilities inherent in the positions of the superintendency and assistant superintendencies of business, instruction and personnel as they emerged during a crisis period. The objective of this experiential project was to examine the role and functions of the school business manager and the school business office.

Major areas that were examined were budgeting procedures, investigation of school district insurance coverage, investigation of developing alternative revenue sources such as a preschool and day care center, and shared time programs.

A directory of self-help organizations in Vermilion County, Illinois, was developed as a project to complete the requirements of the Specialist in Education degree through the Department of Education Leadership at Western Michigan University. The intern's training placement was with the Vermilion County Community 708 Mental Health Board, a mental health funding agency.

It was determined that the majority of self-help groups in Vermilion County were not listed in any existing directory and that a directory of self-help groups was needed. A traditional method of correcting errant behavior of young children has been the use of corporal punishment in the home and 'in loco parentis' in our public schools. Corporal punishment as a disciplinary method, stands on historical precedent and continued social practice, having found its way to America as part of Old World tradition and Puritan theology.

In an attempt to assess current opinion regarding corporal punishment in the schools, a twenty-two-item questionnaire, based on contemporary child development theory, was developed. This major internship for the Specialist Project was served in Glen Oaks Community College, Centreville, Michigan. This 2-year college institution was established in June of 1965 and during the internship had a student enrollment of over 1,200 full-time equated (FTE) students. There were four main divisions through which programs were offered to students. They were: (a) Liberal Arts, (b) Vocational/Technical, (c) Nursing, and (d) Community Service.
