Ged Participants’ Beliefs And Experiences Of Play As A Multi-Domain Approach To Increasing Adults’ Success In The State Of Mississippi, Latisha Taylor
Dissertations
Societal advancements have aided in the evolution of twenty-first-century adult learners. Learners no longer conform to traditional instruction; instead, instruction that adapts to the learner’s needs are necessary. Conventional learning that ensues multi-domain approaches to learning is on the rise. Play-based learning is one such approach that is multifaceted, and versatility in bridging gaps that exist between the learner and the curriculum. Play-based learning is a form of instruction that has the potential to encompass the whole learner by allowing opportunities for cognitive, affective, and psychomotor interactions throughout learning. However, for many, play-based learning is an instructional approach represented solely …
Importance Of Mental Health Awareness For Elementary School Students, Sarah Growitz
Importance Of Mental Health Awareness For Elementary School Students, Sarah Growitz
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
There are a variety of benefits from including school-based mental health awareness programs in elementary schools. Without proper education, students will not know what mental health is and how to seek help. Through the use of a literature review, teacher interview, and surveys, this capstone examines the importance of mental health awareness for elementary school students. Mental health can impact students' lives in such a negative way. It is extremely important for children to be aware that it is okay to struggle and learn how to properly deal with their emotions. It is also especially important for schools and educators …

Raising Awareness Of Good Oral Health To Preschool Children/ Good Oral Health; Beautiful Smiles, Areli Cruz
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
Children from low-income families may be less likely to receive dental care and may have dental health problems. These children may lack oral health literacy, which may contribute to their tooth decay, and affect their school performance and the quality of life. Therefore, I created a three-day lesson on how to maintain good oral health for preschoolers at the Pajaro Valley Unified School District/Child development Center-Linscott state preschool in Watsonville, California.
Quality Child Care In Missouri: The Intersections Of Policy And Teachers' Perceptions Of Quality Child Care, Catherine Slade
Quality Child Care In Missouri: The Intersections Of Policy And Teachers' Perceptions Of Quality Child Care, Catherine Slade
MSU Graduate Theses
A child’s health and well-being is supported by the environment in which they learn and develop. For an average of 36,000 children in Missouri, their environment includes an out-of-home child care program. Child care regulations are designed to protect the health and safety of children in child care. Using a constant comparative method, this study examined the extent to which the child care licensing regulations in Missouri align with the 13 Indicators of Quality Child Care published by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS). This study also examined how effective teachers working in child care programs felt …

A Library Without Books: The Importance Of Language Representation In Public Libraries, Caelyn Armshaw
Theses/Capstones/Creative Projects
The focus of this project is to assess the degree of access to Spanish-language books in the Omaha Public Library system. After constructing a map of all Omaha Public Libraries using Global Information System (GIS) and analyzing the population around those areas, I cross-referenced individual library catalogs to compare raw numbers of English-language books to non-English and specifically Spanish-language books. The ultimate finding of this project is that even though approximately 10% of Omaha citizens included in the census speak Spanish as their primary language, Spanish-language books make up only 2% of the total books across all Omaha Public Libraries. …

Introducing Science Education In Early Childhood, Marissa M. Arciniega
Introducing Science Education In Early Childhood, Marissa M. Arciniega
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
The increasing focus on literacy development and kindergarten readiness in preschool has created a lack of science education in early childhood education. In recent research, Head Start found that of the four academic readiness domains for preschoolers (i.e., language, literacy, math, and science), science is the lowest-performing area amongst students in their program (Bustamante, White, & Greenfield, 2018). Research is showing that declining performance in science is partly due to the lack of science education in classrooms. Lack of science is not only affecting school performance down the road, but it also limits children in receiving the benefits of early …

Literacy levels are too low in Monterey County. Collaboration with the Central Coast YMCA and CHISPA Housing, the goal is to help the disadvantaged kids in grades kinder to 6th in an after-school program. The Central Coast YMCA has a mission to strengthen communities through programs that develop youth and support healthy living. CHISPA housing strengthens low-income families, by providing affordable housing. Contributing factors to the low literacy levels in Monterey County are, language barriers within families, lack of parent engagement and poverty. Fostering Social And Emotional Learning In Early Childhood Education, Allison Cawaling
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
In early childhood education centers, children often lack the opportunity to learn about and develop their social and emotional skills. Without strong social and emotional skills, children may demonstrate behavior problems and low academic success later in school. Therefore I have created a three-day lesson on social and emotional learning for preschool aged children at the Cabrillo College Children’s Center in Aptos, California.

Examination Of Language Skills In Children Who Attend Head Start Programs, Madilyn Littlefield
Examination Of Language Skills In Children Who Attend Head Start Programs, Madilyn Littlefield
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Socioeconomic status and poverty can greatly affect child development and have lasting impacts throughout life. Children who are raised in a low socioeconomic status homes may experience limited parent sensitivity, limited parental engagement, and limited access to stimulating materials. These factors may also limit opportunities to experience rich language and literacy experiences which can negatively impact development of emergent literacy skills and later educational growth. To reduce the effects of poverty on school readiness, income-based childcare programs allow families access to affordable early school readiness opportunities that are developmentally appropriate. Head Start programs are designed to facilitate child development, provide …

A student walks into a classroom multiple grades below grade level and already on day one that student is behind and will most likely be behind their entire school year. Many teachers are faced with this scenario year after year. Students entering their classrooms unprepared for the on-level content they need to be on. Reading below grade level is just the beginning of the learning gap that exists in today’s classrooms. Teachers work hard to close that gap, but by upper elementary is it too late? What can teachers do to help these students grow and become successful learners?

Misunderstanding Child-Centeredness: The Case Of “Child 2.0” And Media Education, Pekka Mertala
Journal of Media Literacy Education
This qualitative study demonstrates the kinds of pedagogical pitfalls that are included in simplistic understandings of child-centeredness in the context of media education, an emerging field of early childhood teacher education with only a little empirical research done so far. Course diaries from 15 preservice teachers were analyzed to find answers to the question: How do preservice teachers approach child-centered education in the context of media education? The main findings can be summarized as follows. First, preservice teachers approached child-centeredness as an all-encompassing principle that guides early childhood education. Second, media education-related issues - beliefs about children and media, ambiguity …

Graduate Student Independent Studies
Adults constantly use their imagination to help them visualize, problem-solve, enjoy a book, empathize, and think creatively. Therefore, using one's imagination is a critical cognitive skill that can be used throughout life. And it is crucial for educators to encourage imagination, creativity and original ideas in childhood through pretend play, story, picture books, and narrative make-believe if we want our students to be mindful and functioning adults in society. Pretend play is also known as "symbolic play" because it involves the use of symbols. This type of symbolic thought is also needed for language and reading, as our words are …
