A Hands-On Museum For Children, Stephanie Townsend

Graduate Theses

This paper concerns itself with the preparation for the development of a children's hands-on museum. Included is a definition of such a museum, a rationale for this type of museum, organizational considerations of a community museum, four exhibits intended to stimulate and guide children's cognitive processes, and a brief summation. The rationale for this children's museum is derived primarily from Piaget's theory of cognitive developmental psychology. Thus, the exhibits are exemplars of Piagetian curriculum. The organization section emphasizes Guthe's philosophy concerning museum organization.

A Study Of The River : Social Studies As The Core Of The Curriculum For Five And Six Year Olds, Carol Yahr Tucker Jun 1976

A Study Of The River : Social Studies As The Core Of The Curriculum For Five And Six Year Olds, Carol Yahr Tucker

Graduate Student Independent Studies

Using social studies as the core of the curriculum is an effective educational framework for five and six year olds. When this curriculum starts with the children's life experiences and goes on to study some aspect of their community or environment, children can begin to understand the interconnectedness of the adult world. Young children feel the excitement of learning when they immerse themselves in a study; they find that learning can be a vital process related to their needs and experiences, rather than a dry transfer of skills and pre-existing bodies of knowledge.

Death In Children's Literature, Joyce Ann Kaufman Jan 1976

Death In Children's Literature, Joyce Ann Kaufman

Honors Theses

Mr. Wordsworth posed an interesting question. What should a child know about death?

Often we try to protect children from death. Euphemisms are used regarding death. People and pets do not die, they "pass away," "go to sleep," or "go to live in heaven." When a death occurs in a family, the adults often say of a young child, "It doesn't seem to bother him. Maybe he doesn't realize what has happened." Other people may mention that "He has accepted it so well. Children adapt so easily."

The Integration Of Affective And Cognitive Concerns In Educational Programs, Elaine Avidon May 1975

The Integration Of Affective And Cognitive Concerns In Educational Programs, Elaine Avidon

Graduate Student Independent Studies

The social and political confrontations of the 1960's forced public school educators to reassess many of their values. Among the crucial issues which resurfaced as a result of this reassessment was the basic question of why some students were learning while others were not. This independent project addresses itself to that question. In particular, it presents one approach .which, when used responsibly, can alter the patterns of non-· learning that exist for so many young people attending schools today.

The integration of affective and cognitive concerns has been written about by many educators. It is also the topic of this …

Learning Centers, Tanna Murry Jan 1973

Learning Centers, Tanna Murry

Honors Theses

Individualized learning through the Learning Center method is becoming more and more popular in today's classrooms. For this reason I chose to develop two basic Learning Centers--one for math and one for language arts--for my honors project. I plan to use these centers and others when I begin to teach.

In preparing these Learning Centers, I used two basic handbooks: Invitation to Learning: the Learning Center Handbook by Ralph Claude Voight and Learning Centers: Children on Their Own prepared by the Association for Childhood Education International. These two sources helped me to sort out and apply ideas of my own …

Study investigated the effectiveness of reinforcement in an observational paradigm where the dependent variable was indicated by increased morphological resemblance of an observer (O) after viewing a model (M). The stimulus was a series of novel responses recorded on videotape with each child viewing the tape individually. The subjects were 32 Head Start males divided into four groups. The first group was administered verbal praise prior to the modeling session. The second served as the vicarious reinforcement condition and observed an adult praise the model. The third group received direct reinforcement during the test for acquisition. The control group received …

Creativity In Pre-School Art, Sharon Kluck Jan 1972

Creativity In Pre-School Art, Sharon Kluck

Honors Theses

"Children are wonderfully fresh and vivacious. What adult can compete with a child's energies? A child's mind runs like a mouse in a maze. He observes, perceives, imitates, and responds as a unique individual." His work is original, using foreign symbols for an image he pulls from his memory. All of the myriad elements, internal and external, influence a child's creation. These works for the young child are expressions of his life's experiences. As he matures in his thinking, he becomes more aware of himself, his family, and the people and things in his environment. He is curious and explore …

Selecting Literature For The Preschool Child, Sharon Kluck

Honors Theses

Although the world of books can be one of fascination and intrigue to any age group, this can be particularly true for the preschooler. During these very impressionable years, books can be used in broadening experiences as well as in combining knowledge and enjoyment to form a book philosophy that will carry over for life. since building this appreciation of books is so important, the proper tools are necessary in correct sequence. Good literature must be carefully selected to fulfill the need.

The Effect Of Kindergarten Attendance On Later School Experiences, Janice Louise Trevan

Master's Theses

Problem

It is estimated that about one-half of our nation's six-year-olds receive their initial formal education when entering first grade. Many authorities in the field of education feel that an early childhood educational experience may be a causative factor in a child's later academic and social adjustment in school.

The purpose of this study was to: (1) compare the academic achievement and social adjustment of first-grade children who have had kindergarten experience and first grade children who have not had kindergarten experience; and (2) compare the academic achievement and social adjustment of fourth grade children who have had kindergarten experience …

Two conceptual constructs gave direction and provided the rationale for this study. The first conceptual construct provided research related to early childhood education presented according to the Geneticist, Environmentalist, and the Interactionalist's positions. The second …

Relationship Between School Success And Physical And Familial Factors Of Kindergarteners, Linda Marie Baker Jan 1971

Relationship Between School Success And Physical And Familial Factors Of Kindergarteners, Linda Marie Baker

All Master's Theses

Teachers in elementary schools often assert that they could teach more successfully if no child under six years of age was admitted to first grade. While teaching kindergarten this writer also found many parents of kindergarten age children quite concerned about the "best" age for their child to enter kindergarten. Besides age there seemed to be concern in other areas such as physical size, coordination, and emotional maturity. However, most school districts in Washington set chronological age as the major requirement for school admission. The problem to be investigated in this study was to determine the relationship, if any, between …

A Developmental Study Of An Extradimensional Shift In Concept Learning, Ingrid I. Simonson Jan 1970

A Developmental Study Of An Extradimensional Shift In Concept Learning, Ingrid I. Simonson

All Master's Theses

The present study was similar to that of Guy et al. (1966), since it was designed to evaluate the hypothesis and cue-conditioning models of concept learning. However, there were three major differences. First, three age groups were tested in an effort to determine whether there were age-related differences in learning strategies. Second, the added cue was placed directly on the stimulus figure rather than in the background surrounding the figure. Third, the stimulus objects were less complex since they represented pictures of animals and articles of clothing instead of geometric designs.
