The beginning forms of communication originate in the form of body movements, also known as gestures. Sign language has been present in recorded history since the 16th century, and the first written records of it began in the 17th century. The purpose of this study is to examine the reasons that girls do not pursue advanced jazz education and to suggest teaching strategies that could encourage greater female participation. I have observed that the number of female students is approximately equal to that of the male students in concert band, and in a concert band setting these girls do seem to advance more quickly than boys. Through literature review and interviews with music educators and female jazz musicians, this study will examine whether some of the teaching techniques that allow girls to succeed in concert band could be adapted to …

Teaching High School Age Students With Special Needs The Four Situations For Subtraction, K. A. D. Miller, Audrey C. Rule, V. M. Macentee
Open Educational Resources
All learners, including those who qualify for special education services, should have access to learning mathematical concepts. This study examined the efficacy of using hands-on sets of materials to teach two high school students with mental retardation the four situations for subtraction. This is a mixed methods study using a simple pretest-posttest design to determine correct interpretation of subtraction story problems for different situations (take-away, comparison, completion, and whole-part-part) and correct regrouping during dynamic subtraction. Eight story problems were presented to the two participants eight weeks prior to instruction; students answered an identical posttest after twelve half-hour lessons on subtraction …
The Americans With Disabilities Act And How It Affects Post-Secondary Education, Annette Louise Beck
The Americans With Disabilities Act And How It Affects Post-Secondary Education, Annette Louise Beck
Graduate Research Papers
The Americans with Disabilities Act and how it affects post-secondary education is what this literature review addresses. The Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA) prohibits discrimination against someone with a disability in places of employment and public places. In 1973, the United States Congress passed Section 504 and The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) was passed in 1990. Both helped solidify regulations regarding discrimination by any entity that receives federal funding including educational institutions. The law requires employers or schools to make a change or adjustment in a work or educational setting, program, or job that makes it …
What Keeps Inclusion Working? : An Examination Of Current Ideas, Kevin Mcrae
What Keeps Inclusion Working? : An Examination Of Current Ideas, Kevin Mcrae
Graduate Research Papers
Inclusion, which began as an implication in Public Law 94-142, now draws the attention of many authors, teachers and parents. The "least restrictive environment" phrase from that legislation leads to the following simple conclusion: Many of the strategies mentioned in the research of this paper produce real results.
Classwide peer tutoring, thoughtful reading strategies that can be individually tailored and mnemonics for remembering those strategies do work. Still, the weight of their worth comes down to how well the teacher does his job everyday. In fact, all successes and failures of teaching come down to that basic fact. If a …

The Counselor's Role In The Peer Sexual Harassment Issue : Educating And Empowering Students Concerning Roles And Rights, Ann Marie Lentz
The Counselor's Role In The Peer Sexual Harassment Issue : Educating And Empowering Students Concerning Roles And Rights, Ann Marie Lentz
Graduate Research Papers
Peer sexual harassment creates and maintains a hostile classroom environment. Schools must offer an inclusive scope of alternative decisions for all students. Students are entitled to support from teachers and school counselors whenever they believe they have experienced such harassment. Student victims need to be advised by encouraging adults in the school system in order to reestablish themselves as active learners.
When adults facilitate student learning regarding the issue of sexual harassment, a safe environment replaces the hostile environment created by sexual bullying. When counselors, teachers, parents, and administrators send a message of support, underlining that sexual harassment is illegal …
Meeting The Needs Of Gifted Adolescent Girls, Marcia Schrader Hoffman
Meeting The Needs Of Gifted Adolescent Girls, Marcia Schrader Hoffman
Graduate Research Papers
Guiding high ability girls during their middle school and high school years has been as complex and enigmatic as the subjects themselves. This review attempted to synthesize information concerning characteristics and needs of adolescent girls, gifted adolescents, and gifted adolescent girls. Those specific needs would help determine what programming options could be implemented in the secondary schools to help gifted females reach their potential. The conclusions drawn from the literature point to a smorgasbord of programming options that can be implemented through collaboration among talented and gifted programs, school-wide efforts, and community-wide strategies.
Environments that provide encouragement and opportunities may …
