Project Intersect Ct Badge Facilitator’S Guide, Terrie M. Galanti
Project Intersect Ct Badge Facilitator’S Guide, Terrie M. Galanti
Computational Thinking
This guide supports STEM teacher educators who would like to offer the 8-week Project InTERSECT CT badge course (15 hours) to a small group of elementary pre-service or practicing teachers.
The facilitator’s guide describes the structure of the Canvas course, editable text for weekly announcements, and suggested feedback statements to support weekly activity completion and reflection.
Evaluating And Improving Domain-Specific Programming Education: A Case Study With Cal Poly Chemistry Courses, Will Fuchs
Evaluating And Improving Domain-Specific Programming Education: A Case Study With Cal Poly Chemistry Courses, Will Fuchs
Master's Theses
Programming is a key skill in many domains outside computer science. When used judiciously, programming can empower people to accomplish what might be impossible or difficult with traditional methods. Unfortunately, students, especially non-CS majors, frequently have trouble while learning to program. This work reports on the challenges and opportunities faced by Physical Chemistry (PChem) students at Cal Poly, SLO as they learn to program in MATLAB. We assessed the PChem students through a multiple-choice concept inventory, as well as through “think-aloud” interviews. Additionally, we examined the students’ perceptions of and attitudes towards programming. We found that PChem students are adept …
Improving Computational Thinking: Action Research Implementing A School Makerspace With Elementary Students, Timothy Clifford Swick
Improving Computational Thinking: Action Research Implementing A School Makerspace With Elementary Students, Timothy Clifford Swick
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this action research was to evaluate the implementation of making experiences to support computational thinking through the development of makerspaces for fifth grade students at an elementary school in South Carolina. This action research explored the following three central questions: (1) To what extent did the implementation of a makerspace improve computational thinking skills for fifth grade students at an elementary school in South Carolina?, (2) How did these students' perceptions of using computational thinking as a problem solving method change based on makerspace experiences? and (3) How did their problem solving skills change through the use …
Collaborative Strategic Board Games As A Site For Distributed Computational Thinking, Matthew Berland, Victor R. Lee
Collaborative Strategic Board Games As A Site For Distributed Computational Thinking, Matthew Berland, Victor R. Lee
Instructional Technology and Learning Sciences Faculty Publications
This paper examines the idea that contemporary strategic board games represent an informal, interactional context in which complex computational thinking takes place. When games are collaborative – that is, a game requires that players work in joint pursuit of a shared goal – the computational thinking is easily observed as distributed across several participants. This raises the possibility that a focus on such board games are profitable for those who wish to understand computational thinking and learning in situ. This paper introduces a coding scheme, applies it to the recorded discourse of three groups of game players, and provides qualitative …
