Why Latino American Community College Students Drop Out After One Semester, Rosa Delia Smith
Why Latino American Community College Students Drop Out After One Semester, Rosa Delia Smith
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The purpose of this qualitative case study was to investigate why many Latino America students at an urban community college in the state of Maryland who were enrolled at least part-time and were U.S. citizens or permanent residents did not continue their education into the second semester. Guided by Tinto's model of student integration and student persistence, this study explored the reasons these students dropped-out using the students' words to describe barriers to success, factors that influenced their decisions not to return for their second semester, and what they believed could have made a difference in their decisions. Five Latino …
Between A Rock And A Hard Place: Role Dissonance In Female Non-Traditional Students, Jane E. Marsman
Between A Rock And A Hard Place: Role Dissonance In Female Non-Traditional Students, Jane E. Marsman
College Student Affairs Leadership
This paper reviews literature on non-traditional students, role dissonance, and the unique challenges faced by individuals who must balance the role of postsecondary student with a multiplicity of other roles. From the foundation of Erikson’s (1959/1980) identity development theory; Gilligan’s (1982/1993) theory of moral development; and other research on role identities, the author proposes a theoretical framework for examining role dissonance and its effect on the postsecondary educational experiences and persistence of female non-traditional students. A developmental task central to the academic and personal success of the female non-traditional student is her progression from a belief that she must sacrifice …
Student Retention In Bsn Programs, Katherine Pittman Hensley
Student Retention In Bsn Programs, Katherine Pittman Hensley
Educational Leadership & Workforce Development Theses & Dissertations
This study examined, by use of a researcher-developed survey instrument, perceptions between three groups on reasons why students drop out of nursing programs. Also examined are recommendations from the three groups on how to try to avoid nursing student attrition. Specific groups surveyed included native BSN students, RNB students, and a mixed group of nursing faculty. Survey items were divided into two general groups: student-related issues, and institutional issues. Since RNB students (which include a larger number of non-traditional students) and BSN students (which include more of the native university population of traditional students) have many differences, the author attempted …
Developmental Education Repeaters: Stories About Repetition, Jade J. O'Dell
Developmental Education Repeaters: Stories About Repetition, Jade J. O'Dell
University of New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Developmental education students make up almost half of the community college population in the United States (Bettinger & Long, 2005). Approximately 42% of first-time freshmen at community colleges must enroll in at least one developmental education course in English, reading and/or math (NCES, 2010). Many developmental education students are unsuccessful in passing a developmental education course in their first and second attempts and retake the course sometimes five times before passing. There is substantial research on persistence among college students, but the research fails to link persistence to developmental education repeaters. My study sought to explore community college developmental education …
Examining The Motivating Factors That Influence Students With An Associate’S Degree To Complete A Bachelor’S Degree At A Private University, Rudolph D, Smith
Examining The Motivating Factors That Influence Students With An Associate’S Degree To Complete A Bachelor’S Degree At A Private University, Rudolph D, Smith
Dissertations
The intent of this study was to shed light on the reasons and factors that influence the decision for community college graduates to complete a bachelor’s degree at a private, not-for-profit university. In addition, this study sought to identify and describe why students persist during degree completion programs, as well as the inhibitors and facilitators found throughout such programs.
This research was built on the qualitative research paradigm employing semi-structured interviews and focus groups to investigate how the elements of motivation theory influenced students to complete a bachelor’s degree program. The findings from the study validate that students are motivated …
An Ex Post Facto Study Of First-Year Student Orientation As An Indicator Of Student Success At A Community College, Amanda Ellis-O'Quinn
An Ex Post Facto Study Of First-Year Student Orientation As An Indicator Of Student Success At A Community College, Amanda Ellis-O'Quinn
Educational Leadership & Workforce Development Theses & Dissertations
The purpose of this ex post facto study is to determine if a relationship exists between certain student success indicators and students completing an orientation course their first semester at a small, rural community college in comparison to those students who do not complete an orientation course their first semester. The study will compare three instructional methods used in teaching orientation; a two-day, ten-week, and distance learning format. This emphasis will identify the impact of the delivery format on success measures. The measures representing student success are retention from the fall to concurrent spring semester and grade point average (GPA). …
The Factors That Are Related To Native American Community College Students' Intent To Persist, Garnet Laureen Williams
The Factors That Are Related To Native American Community College Students' Intent To Persist, Garnet Laureen Williams
Educational Leadership & Workforce Development Theses & Dissertations
More than half of Native American higher education students choose community colleges as their institution of choice. However, when compared with other ethnic groups, Native American/Alaska Natives (NA/AN) students earn the second-lowest number of associate degrees and the lowest number of bachelor's degrees. Despite this substantive gap, few studies have explored the factors related to Native American community college students' intent to persist. With the projected population surge of NA/AN residents over the next 15 years, more research on the factors related to Native American community college students' intent to persist in college is warranted.
This ex post facto study …
Persistence Of Community College Transfer Students In A Private Liberal Arts University Nursing Program, Rita M. Amerio
Persistence Of Community College Transfer Students In A Private Liberal Arts University Nursing Program, Rita M. Amerio
Educational Leadership & Workforce Development Theses & Dissertations
The United States is bracing for the largest shortage of registered nurses that the United States health care system has ever experienced. As the population of "baby boomers," those born between 1946 and 1960, turns 65 beginning in 2011, the nation will be faced with providing health care services to the largest group of elderly Americans in history. Unlike previous generations, this group has had the advantage of advanced medical care that will allow them to live well into their 80s and even 90s.
The purpose of this study was to conduct a preliminary investigation to identify predictor variables that …
Moderator Effect Of Financial Aid On Predictors Of Community College Graduation Rate, Richard Wilt
Moderator Effect Of Financial Aid On Predictors Of Community College Graduation Rate, Richard Wilt
Educational Leadership & Workforce Development Theses & Dissertations
This study examined the resource allocation decisions community colleges make in order to gain insight into the relationship of those decisions to graduation rate and whether those relationships were influenced by the percentage of students at the college receiving financial aid. Much of the literature on persistence and graduation rate in higher education is based on student characteristics such as SAT scores, high school GPA, ethnicity, and socioeconomic status, or on college selectivity. This study switches the focus to the characteristics of the college rather than the student.
The relative lack of literature on community college graduation rates and the …
Pre- And Post-Matriculation Correlates Of Student Retention Within A Community College Setting, Pamela E. Goodman
Pre- And Post-Matriculation Correlates Of Student Retention Within A Community College Setting, Pamela E. Goodman
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In the 1990s, due in part to declining enrollment numbers and prolonged budget constraints, student retention became a primary focus in higher education. Aligned with the nationwide interest, this longitudinal, archival study focused on the correlates of student retention at Walters State Community College, located in Morristown, Tennessee. The population involved 17,497 students enrolled from the fall semester of 1992 through the fall semester of 1997. Four sets of variables were investigated--demographic variables, pre-matriculation variables, post-matriculation variables related to grades, and post-matriculation variables related to enrollment. The data were collected through the use of a computer program written to access …
