Lesson Plan (2024-2025), Tara Panzer

CPN 101: Remix

In this remix assignment, Tara Panzer takes research on The Flower Man and “The Key Game” and creates a two-day lesson plan sequence with rationales for activities and assignments in order to teach third graders about the Holocaust. The standards she identifies for this lesson plan are students taking perspectives of and empathizing with others, including those from diverse backgrounds and cultures.

A Film About Tragedy Remix Letter To The Editor (2024-2025), Rhiannon O’Boyle

CPN 101: Remix

In this example of a remix letter to the editor, we decided to include a pairing of both the remix and the original research inquiry (published here after the remix.) In her remix, Rhiannon O’Boyle takes a research inquiry about the role of historical fiction, the love story of Jack and Rose, and the true events of the sinking of the Titanic in James Cameron’s 1997 film, Titanic, and remixes them into the genre of a letter to the editor. In her remix letter to the editor, she expresses an opinion about the necessity of the love story.

Artificial Authors (2024-2025), Shreya Dhital

Argument

In this piece Shreya Dhital frames her discussion of Artificial Intelligence (AI) with emphasis on the definition of the word artificial. In giving this definition, she argues for the need to keep in mind that while AI might be intelligent it is also contrived, human-derived, and lacking in spontaneity. She further develops this argument through the use of fiction, including a short story, “The Shawl,” to show how human-written work draws on a depth of real-life experiences, unexpected human emotions, and ultimately is what gives AI its training in “learning” how to write. Critical Evaluation

In this piece Edona Hasanaj writes about her experiences in CPN 100 with three different writing assignments—a narrative, a rhetorical analysis, and an argumentative piece. Throughout Hasanaj draws both on her feelings about the process and direct quotations from her own work. She weaves together a sense of what she wrote in each assignment, as well as how that writing taught her different skills and possibilities for her writing in the future.

Critical Evaluation

The following critical evaluation piece offers a reflection at the conclusion of CPN 101. In this piece Ashley Klees considers a number of different skills and strategies that she learned through CPN 101, including the need for specificity, the importance of finding and following a model, and how to modify writing for different audiences. She notes how these experiences in CPN 101 will be important in her future career as a teacher, not only in writing to different audiences, but also in differentiating lesson plans for a range of different students.

This study investigated the impact that co-curricular programming delivered by the University Honors Program (UHP) at North Carolina State University through the Honors Forum course had on first-year students’ self-reported knowledge of civil discourse, their assessment of its importance and impact, and their evaluation of their commitment to the skills and values related to it. The Honors Forum is designed to help students develop a broad worldview by exposing them to lectures by scholars and public figures, panel discussions about contemporary societal debates, peer-facilitated discussions about books, films, and current events, and conversations with faculty and UHP graduates. Textile represents one of the most important cultural heritages in Indonesia and is an integral part of social and religious lives of traditional communities. Due to colonial impact, shifts in indigenous belief systems and values, modernization, and tourism, many textiles have left their original environments. Many gained new contexts as museum objects housed in regional museums or private collections in Indonesia and abroad.

Lotic waterways are vital for habitat, food, water, and flood protection, but urbanization poses a major threat to their integrity. Runoff from urban surfaces leads to pollution, flashiness, loss of biodiversity, and other symptoms, also known as Urban Stream Syndrome (USS). Streams can be restored in order to combat USS, but most restorations are not monitored, so their long-term effectiveness is unknown. This study quantitatively evaluated a decade-old stream restoration in Fayetteville, Arkansas, to assess its effectiveness in combating USS and achieving set restoration goals, and to gain insights for future restoration projects. A major objective of the University of Arkansas System Division of Agriculture (UADA) Fruit Breeding program is to improve the texture of blackberry (Rubus subgenus Rubus Watson). Blackberry varieties with improved fruit firmness transport and store well and may maintain superior quality under challenging postharvest conditions than softer varieties. Increased firmness may also make cultivars less susceptible to red drupelet reversion (RDR), a postharvest disorder of blackberries in which fully black drupelets revert to red after harvest. Background: In the United States (U.S.), falls are the leading cause of injury among adults 65 and over, resulting in 36 million falls yearly (Moreland et al., 2020). According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC, 2023), one in four older adults experiences a fall each year. Falls are the world's second most prominent cause of accidental deaths (World Health Organization [WHO], 2021). Falls are the leading cause of both fatal and non-fatal injuries among older adults (Moreland et al., 2020).

Objective

The aim of this study was to investigate the frequency and duration of technology use by autistic children, their primary activities when engaging with technology, and the association between technology use and quality of life. We assumed that technology serves as a means of communication with peers, and it is associated with an improved quality of life.

Methods

Proposed regulations for alcohol advertising prevent beverage companies from targeting people under the legal drinking age. However, similar regulations for alcohol alternative beverages are less explored, which could allow alcohol alternative products to create awareness for alcoholic beverages among youth. Alcohol alternatives beverages, including no-alcohol and low-alcohol products, are increasing in popularity and can function as compliments to alcoholic products to decrease the total alcohol volume consumed or as substitutes for alcoholic products. Based on several national mandates, this essay examines the support for and importance of active advocacy among our discipline members in framing the conversation about oral communication proficiency, leading instructional design, and assessing student learning on our campuses. Recommended action involves the development and implementation of a coordinated strategy for engaging both institutional accreditors and those charged with the development and modification of individual campus general education requirements regarding the importance of communication scholars and instructors as principal designers of learning goals, subsequent learning activities, and the corresponding assessment of oral communication instruction on college campuses.

This teaching case presents an AI-assisted workflow design activity that challenges students to integrate AI tools into solving real-world communication problems. Students engage in a structured process of problem identification, solution sketching, and prototype development, culminating in the creation and testing of an AI-human collaborative workflow. The activity fosters critical thinking about AI capabilities and limitations while encouraging students to apply AI tools to personally relevant scenarios.

Examining Systemic And Dispositional Factors Impacting Historically Disenfranchised Schools Across North Carolina, Raketa Ouedraogo-Thomas

This mixed method sequential explanatory study provided analysis of North Carolina (NC) school leaders’ dispositions in eliminating opportunity gaps, outlined in NC’s strategic plan. The study’s quantitative phase used descriptive and correlation analysis of eight Likert subscales around four tenets of transformative leadership (Shields, 2011) and aspects of critical race theory (Bell, 1992; Ladson-Billings, 1998; Ladson-Billings & Tate, 2006) to understand systemic inequities and leadership attitudes.

The qualitative phase comprised three analyses of education leadership dispositions and systemic factors in NC schools. The first analysis of State Board of Education meeting minutes from 2018–2023 quantified and analyzed utterances of racism …
