The English Language: Exploring Its Educational, Economic, And Social Market Value In New Delhi, Andrea Asai

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

As English continues to solidify itself as the global language, the idea that proficiency in English is the key to upward mobility is spreading. This trend is especially present throughout India, yet the quality of English education continues to vary drastically. Unequal prospects from a young age greatly impact future opportunities and while many are using English to soar up, still a large percentage of Indians are being left behind. In many cases, English is still viewed as the language of the elite, but underprivileged groups are also using it to positively change their lives. By using semi-structured interviews, questionnaires, …

We Should Have High Standards For All Students, Not Just Those At Harvard, Jayne M. Comstock Sep 2012

We Should Have High Standards For All Students, Not Just Those At Harvard, Jayne M. Comstock

Scholarship and Professional Work - Communication

After nearly a decade as a chief academic officer, I got used to people asking me my opinion on higher education issues. But now that I am working at the American Council on Education, the questions are more far reaching. For example, recently, someone asked me what I thought should be done about the cheating scandal at Harvard.

Can We Own Art? Or Just Be Its Legal Guardian?, Carla Poindexter Sep 2012

Can We Own Art? Or Just Be Its Legal Guardian?, Carla Poindexter

UCF Forum

How can we effectively teach students to be professional artists at a time when some of society’s economic values are so unrealistic? It is true the high-end art market is thriving, but the contemporary art community is arguing whether such outrageous public auctions and private sales are good or bad for art.

New Calendar Would Improve Educational Climate In Classrooms, Richard C. Crepeau

UCF Forum

Growing up in Minnesota, I thought it was sensible to be in school while the frigid winters took their toll on outdoor life. Now in Florida, it would make the same kind of sense to be in school while the broiling summers take their toll on those brave enough to venture out into the heat, humidity, and the capricious lighting strikes so familiar to us all.

In response to an increasingly interdependent world, educators are demonstrating a growing interest in educating for global citizenship. Many definitions of the “good global citizen” value empathy as an especially important disposition for understanding others across national borders and cultural divides. Yet it may be difficult for people to achieve empathy with others who are perceived as psychologically and geographically distant. Can computerized simulation games help foster global empathy and interest in global civic learning? This quasiexperimental classroom study of 301 Northern California high school students in three schools examined the effects of playing REAL LIVES, a simulation game that …
