An Effective Method Of Teaching English: A Handbook For English Teachers In China, Zichen Cai
An Effective Method Of Teaching English: A Handbook For English Teachers In China, Zichen Cai
Master's Projects and Capstones
Along with the significance of learning English has been emphasized by Chinese government for more than thirty years, more and more Westerns who mostly came from the U.S and England were welcomed to teach English in China. However, most of them are not qualified to teach, and they are not well-prepared before teaching according to author’s observation, which make students lose their interest in learning English eventually. Moreover, these foreign ESL teachers follow the activities and exercises in the textbook step by step while teaching, which is very dull and monotonous. In the literature review, the factors that might influence …

Effective Ways To Lower Muslim Immigrant Students' Anxiety In Esl Classes: A Handbook For Educators, Mehrnaz Ayazi
Master's Projects and Capstones
ABSTRACT
This field project is a handbook for educators that recommends effective ways of lowering Muslim refugee students' anxiety in ESL classrooms. Schools are challenging for refugee and immigrant students as they have to navigate school systems that do not accommodate their unique needs. As a result, Muslim refugee students are often discriminated against, marginalized, and bullied in schools. They suffer from low self-confidence, high anxiety, and lack of motivation. Research concludes that educational institutions in host countries are ill-equipped in creating an equitable education and school environment for Muslim refugee students due to the lack of educators’ training and …

Student-Created Videos As Esl Homework Assignments, Griffin Childers
Master's Projects and Capstones
There is a constantly growing number of people around the world who are learning English as an additional language. A lot of innovation has been focused on classroom teaching techniques, but homework pedagogies are vastly underrepresented. In contrast to interesting and interactive classroom activities, homework assignments are often uninspiring, focusing on worksheet completion and memorization. This project is a workshop presentation to be given at ESL focused conferences such as the TESOL conference. The presentation will provide discussion and hands-on training to teachers to learn how to create effective homework assignments in which students will create and narrate short videos …
Taming Test Anxiety About Multiple-Choice Questions In Academic-Track Esl Students: A Test-Taking Skills Workshop Series, Lori Selke
Master's Projects and Capstones
Test anxiety among students at all levels is a well-documented phenomenon. Academic English learners, however, such as those who enroll in for-credit academic classes in California community colleges, face issues specific to their situation. Most notably, these students are often unfamiliar with the multiple-choice question (MCQ) test format, which is common in the United States but not as frequently utilized in in other countries. Students thus lack knowledge of the specific strategies and approaches that can help them successfully complete an assessment offered in this format. Both test anxiety and cultural unfamiliarity with assessment formats can prevent students from exhibiting …

Black Unrealia: Handbook For Teaching The Structure Of Past Counterfactual Statements, A. Carter
Master's Projects and Capstones
For various reasons, students are attending California community colleges to learn English. Classes taught are usually influenced by models that integrate aspects of reading, writing, speaking, and listening, and courses that center on grammar are rarely if ever taught. There has been a resurgence in interest in Form Focused Instruction and strong evidence that grammar instruction combined with Corrective Feedback can produce marked gains in a student’s implicit and explicit knowledge of grammatical forms. This Field Project proposes that by combining Form Focused Instruction with aspects of Communicative Language Teaching such as authentic materials, or realia, instructors can assist learners …
Tools Of Engagement For Language Acquisition, Cheng Li
Tools Of Engagement For Language Acquisition, Cheng Li
Master's Projects and Capstones
It has increasingly become a common phenomenon that a lot of focus is placed on listening skills and disregarding the significance of oral skills in English classes in China. This mode of teaching that allows students to practice only listening, but not practice speaking, has a lot of drawbacks. Classroom context where students are denied the opportunity to participate by speaking the language does not motivate them to develop pragmatic skills that are useful for learners. This project illustrates how classroom teacher-student interactions occur and how the use of appropriate social media technology could be useful to motivate learners. It …

From Anxiety To Motivation: Creating Anxiety-Free Classrooms Using Culturally Responsive Teaching, Jing Rong
Master's Projects and Capstones
Simultaneous with cultural and economic globalization, English is spread as the key to receiving education in the U.S. This trend is starting to bring about new knowledge ecologies involving English as a second language (ESL) students and instructors. However, learning efficiency issues have been frequently confronted by ESL students, among which learning anxiety is a major setback. There are multiple factors causing learning anxieties, including the cultural transitions that ESL students are experiencing. This study focuses on analyzing the causes as well as the solutions to ESL students’ learning anxiety issues. Culturally Responsive Teaching (CRT) is a practical and effective …
Enhancing Accessibility, Diversity, And Literacy Of Heritage Language Maintenance In Our Community: A Proposal For Public Libraries With A Focus On The Korean Community, Sooyoung Yang
Master's Projects and Capstones
In contrast to the U.S. emphasis on producing English monolinguals, the needs of world language fluency and education have become more evident than ever as society becomes more globalized and potential bilinguals and even multilinguals are transformed to important human resources. However, even now, linguistically diverse communities often experience significant heritage language loss after immigrating to the U.S. due to the still long-held undervaluation of heritage languages and the push for rapid assimilation to the new society. Research has revealed the many benefits and advantages of heritage language development and maintenance, but unfortunately, the formal education system in the U.S. …
Intergroup Dialogue With High School Participants, Meaghan E. Kachadoorian
Intergroup Dialogue With High School Participants, Meaghan E. Kachadoorian
Master's Projects and Capstones
Liberatory education facilitates identity expression, promotes empathy and understanding across difference, and builds capacity for recognizing and resisting oppressive social structures. However, many students’ educational experiences lack intentional practices that subvert societal intolerance. Without these practices, education can perpetuate social group divide without empowering students to create social change. The practice of dialogue, specifically critical intergroup dialogue, brings together participants from various social group identities in facilitated conversations in pursuit of social transformation. This project is an exploration of intergroup dialogue with high school students. For the research, I carried out a phenomenological study by co-facilitating a dialogue group with …

Self-Directed Learning Practices In Esl: How Beginning Adult Latinx English Language Learners Can Increase Learning Outcomes, Jessica Parisi
Master's Projects and Capstones
This field project investigates the self-directed learning (SDL) practices that could increase learner outcomes in English language acquisition for beginning adult English language learners (ELLs), and presents on a website designed for the learner, the practices and local resources to engage them. Non-credit English as a second language (ESL) courses in community colleges in the San Francisco Bay Area have high enrollment and low levels of advancement, especially beginning levels. Latinx adult ELLs face unique challenges that contribute to their low rates of advancement, including linguistic isolation, and work and home duties that often prevent learners from attending classes the …
Supporting English Language Learners With Disabilities In Special Education, Margaret Kramer
Supporting English Language Learners With Disabilities In Special Education, Margaret Kramer
Master's Projects and Capstones
The number of English Language Learners, both appropriately and inappropriately, placed in Special Education has risen in the public education system. This requires Special Education classrooms to incorporate language acquisition opportunities into the child’s education, but the school systems are not currently prepared to provide this to the staff and students. There is a lack of culturally and linguistically appropriate curricula, limited collaboration between parents and teachers, and incomplete IEPs affecting students placed in Special Education and learning English as a second language. The purpose of the project is to address the needs of staff and families working with students …

Using Sitcoms In Esl/Efl: A Handbook For Using Friends In The Classroom, Elif Konus
Master's Projects and Capstones
English learning has become the most significant objective throughout the world for learners of English as a second language (ESL) and foreign language (EFL). Unfortunately, most learners do not have a chance to learn the language in English-speaking countries. In most ESL and EFL classrooms, teachers have solely adapted their teaching method through textbooks even though there are numerous teaching techniques to support learners’ language process. Considering the fact that we live in an age of constant change of technology in which students’ attention spans have been shortened, students might lack engagement and motivation in learning English through solely textbook-adapted …
Teaching With Empathy In The Adult Esl Classroom: A Training Guide, Maureen Carapia
Teaching With Empathy In The Adult Esl Classroom: A Training Guide, Maureen Carapia
Master's Projects and Capstones
Many view empathy as a necessary skill for relating to different groups of people and successfully communicating across cultures. Research supports empathy’s importance in the education field for promoting positive outcomes in the classroom and fomenting a culturally sensitive class environment. Teaching with empathy is particularly important in the context of adult ESL (English as a Second Language) instruction, given the culturally diverse classroom environment and instructors who likely possess different cultural norms than their students. Regarding effective strategies to teach these students with empathy, however, the research falls short. The mere notion of defining empathy breeds disagreement, as many …

Demystifying English Simple Past Tense: A Thai Teachers’ Guide To Teaching English Simple Past Tense To Thai Adult Learners, Chitkamon Tungkaburana
Master's Projects and Capstones
Similar to many English learners whose native language does not use tense-aspect system to describe events/ or actions, Thai learners find English tense-aspect system very challenging to fully acquire. Ineffective current pedagogical teaching approaches used and mother tongue influence inhibit English tense-aspect acquisition and pose learning difficulties. In this field project, I would like to show Thai teachers how to teach English Simple Past tense more effectively with application of Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) approach. I created a teachers’ guidebook solely just to prove that English tenses are not too difficult to acquire. It is relatively accomplishable if done right. …
Multimedia Training For Novice Efl Teachers In East Asia, Franklin Hewins
Multimedia Training For Novice Efl Teachers In East Asia, Franklin Hewins
Master's Projects and Capstones
Schools in East Asia have shown a preference for hiring young, native English-speakers from majority white countries as EFL teachers. In addition, the high demand for English language instruction has made it difficult to fill all positions with qualified teachers. As a result, there is an issue with undertrained and underqualified native English-speaking teachers in East Asian classrooms. The purpose of this project is to provide these novice teachers with training in the use of video clips as a way to help them overcome their lack of a pedagogical knowledge. The use of video clips allows teachers to personalize content, …

Watch & Learn - A Teacher's Guidebook For Film-Based Esl Course, Xiaoxue Zhu
Master's Projects and Capstones
Educators in the 21st century are continuously discovering more engaging teaching tools to facilitate language learners. In today's increasingly developing visual world, film stands out from other traditional materials for its unique features, such as the visuality and authenticity. With appropriately designed activities, film could be a valuable resource in teaching English as a second language (TESOL) setting, and also a perfect tool for inspiring cross-cultural communication and promoting critical thinking skills.
However, research has shown that ESL teachers feel reluctant to use film as a significant component in their classrooms even though they have recognized and affirmed the benefit …
English For Baking: Lessons For Kitchen Workers Using On-Site Learning, Christopher Torossian
English For Baking: Lessons For Kitchen Workers Using On-Site Learning, Christopher Torossian
Master's Projects and Capstones
Today, the back of house staff in culinary kitchens is comprised largely by migrant workers whose native language is something other than English. At times this can create issues among workers due to communication errors or complete lack of communication all together, posing issues for not only cooking, but it can also be a threat to kitchen safety as well. Additionally, due to native speaker stigma surrounding non-native speakers of English, many workers are often denied the chance at a higher position in the workplace simply because of their low communicative competence, despite their actual talents and skills in the …

Emphasizing The Importance Of Cultural Identity Of Second Language Learners In Lesson Plans, Sreyasi De
Master's Projects and Capstones
A sky rocketing trend of one in three United States residents is estimated to be either an immigrant or the child of an immigrant by 2065. How well immigrants and second-generation immigrants are inhabiting in United States is of great significance to the state of being happy, healthy, prosperous, and full of energy and resonance of the United States in general. While economic, political, and social aspects of immigration are frequently contemplated for policy-making, comparatively small investigations have examined the cultural identity of the immigrants. In the review of literature, topics of intercultural competence, cultural competence, and culturally responsive teaching …

Building Engagement Through Developing Students’ Sense Of Self-Control, Natalia Sanchez Gonzalez
Master's Projects and Capstones
Students who enter public schools in the United States in the latter part of their academic career may lack the English language proficiency or capital necessary to successfully participate in mainstream content courses. Students such as these, known as late arrivals, face even greater difficulties when they enter academic institutions that or not equipped to provide language supports that ensure students can access content. Arriving at a later age and grade level, places additional pressure on educators and students to enter mainstream language classrooms. With little control or access to be active participants in the new academic settings, these students …
An Intensive Esl Camp Curriculum And Excursion Activities For International High School Graduated / College Students, Ying Chen
Master's Projects and Capstones
There are many factors for students’ poor command of English among international students in the native language institutions. One of the factors is the students’ negative attitude and low motivation in English learning. Another aspect to lower students’ English learning motivation is the inappropriate use of the learning materials. Moreover, learners still lack a chance to immerse in the real language environment and the authentic cultural background to improve their comprehensively intercultural and communicative competence. For the sake that the second language instruction provided in regular schools is limited in time, many students even do not have enough time to …

Thinking Outside The Box: Incorporating Critical Thinking Strategies In Esl Reading & Writing Instruction, Johanna Carranza
Master's Projects and Capstones
ABSTRACT
ESL students in the United States avail the resources of community college to achieve their goal of academic excellence. However, many community colleges struggle to prepare their students for mainstream four-year institutions. Aside from reading, writing, and speaking, learning a second language requires the development of critical thinking skills which are not emphasized enough for many ESL students in contemporary American academia.
As such, there are two major problems that this project aims to address. The first is that English as a Second Language (ESL) and English instructors have different expectations for ESL students. ESL instructors do not focus …

Understanding The Body Paragraph: A Handbook For Efl Teachers & Students, Terpsithea P. Papadopoulos
Master's Projects and Capstones
English learners have a significant gap in their English language learning in that they have difficulty writing paragraphs. This difficulty appears to be the result of a combination of factors: foreign English language teachers’ lack of training and support to teach writing, the manner in which English is taught abroad, and students not learning or understanding the logical flow of a paragraph in English academic writing. This project aims to reduce the gap in students’ inability to write effective body paragraphs and foreign English language teachers’ knowledge of paragraph writing. The handbook created in this field project provides supplementary materials …

Teaching English In China’S Shadow Education Settings Where Communicative Competence Is Left Out, Bei Ye
Master's Projects and Capstones
English shadow education, whose curriculum in the shadow mimics the curriculum inside the school (Zhang, 2014) has become increasingly prevalent in China. The fact that English shadow education simply serves for dealing with examinations without developing learner autonomy and communicative competence is a problem that needs to be solved. However, the huge demand for shadow education is derived from deep-rooted traditional values and the current education system. Also, many contextual realities such as high student-teacher ratio, overloaded curriculum, and teachers’ limited English language proficiency (Nunan, 2003; Yu, 2001; Zhang & Watkins, 2007) stop teachers applying the Communicative Approach and should …

English has been a compulsory subject in Grades 3-9 in China since 2010, English is also a compulsory subject at the secondary level and widely used at the postsecondary level as well. However, Chinese English teachers spend more time teaching English grammar and vocabulary translation while ignoring the instruction of listening and speaking. The importance of teaching listening has been ignored while listening skill is primary to the acquisition of the other language skills. Chinese students’ incompetence of listening and speaking has become a common phenomenon. Also, due to the exam-oriented education system in China, students are under intense pressure, …

Empowering Students To Develop L2 Identity - Supplemental Online Lessons, Laura Espino
Master's Projects and Capstones
As an immigrant, learning English is part of acculturating to the new culture. From this process, a new identity emerges in the context of the new language and culture. Currently, identity issues and intercultural competence are explicit objectives in language learning. The implications of neglecting identity formation in second language acquisition include vulnerability to culture shock, mental health issues, and the inability to thrive. The unique set of needs, motivations, and strengths of immigrant English language learners should inform language instruction design in order to achieve sustainable and equitable successful language learning and acculturation. Explicitly designing instruction that incorporates issues …

Teaching Idioms To Chinese International Students Through Multimedia, Wenrui Wang
Master's Projects and Capstones
Native speakers tend to use idioms to express specific meaning and make language vivid. However, using idioms sometimes causes problems for ESL learners to understand, because the idioms always have figurative meaning. It is necessary for international students to strengthen their ability to understand and use idioms, because the idioms also contain many culture meanings. This project explores research in vocabulary teaching and using multimedia in ESL learning to create a handbook of learning idioms for the target group of college level Chinese international students. It contains idioms selected from visual and audio materials, such as movies, documentaries, pop songs, …

Master's Projects and Capstones
For the past 40 years, first generation college students have been the topic of scholarly research aiming to improve college persistence models. Because of the shifting ethnic demographics, an increase in underrepresented minority students continues to diversify the population of first generation college students. The debate ensues when existing dominant persistence models fail to address the multidimensional challenges students from underrepresented backgrounds experience when transitioning to college. The focus of dominant persistence models is in encouraging first generation students to assimilate by leaving their old identity to gain a new identity and learning the “ins and outs” of how to …
